embassy was 85 at gatwick for 1000
and you can buy on plane going out and coming back they even encourage you to buy more than your duty free allowance on planes which i find bad for airlines to do this as they should be leading the way

Hi John,
To answer your question buy on the plane.

interesting thread. Heres a simple question. If you buy xx lires of Vodka in Manchester on the way out, it sits unopened, and comes back with you, does that count against the allowance on the way back, or is it considered seperately ?

Your allowance entering the UK is 1 litre of spirits and 200 cigarettes regardless of where you buy them.

Hi I know what the duty free allowance is coming back from Turkey, but I have been told that if you take a day trip over to Rhodes etc then you can bring back as much as you want as Greece is in the EU. Seemingly you keep your receipt and show it at customs in the UK.
Does anyone know if this is correct? :

Hi and welcome to HT!

Before you could bring them back to the UK, you would have to import them into Turkey and it is their allowance you need to find out. I think it is 200, but I'm not 100% certain.

luci you are correct it is only 200 per person from Turkey to the U.K.

It wasn't from Turkey to the UK that I meant. What they need to find out is the allowance for bringing cigs into Turkey.

200 cigs or 50 cigars or 200g tobacco.
Additional 400 cigs or 100 cigars or 500g tobacco if purchased at duty free shops.

Hope this helps.

Angie. :)

Your allowance to bring into Turkey is 600 cigs and 200 grams hand rolling tobacco, 2x1 liter of spirits.

When we were in Marmaris 2 years ago our friends went to Rhodes for the day and brought a few bottles of spirit back to Turkey.
Someone told them they would not be allowed to take it back to the UK so they drank it during the rest of their holiday :rofl

To Luci the moderator. Are you saying that whatever the allowance is for me to take from Rhodes to Turkey as long as I keep my receipt from Rhodes I would be able to take them back to the UK without penalty as I have paid duty on them in the country which I purchased them from?

Yes that is my understanding. You are restricted by the allowance of what you can import into Turkey. You should then be able to take them into the UK provided you can prove you bought them in Rhodes and paid the duty, but don't shoot the messenger if it goes horribly wrong!

I am basing this on my experience of buying in Madeira on a cruise. We flew to/from Tenerife which only has a 200 allowance. However we were visiting Madeira, which as part of Portugal has a 3200 allowance. When the ship arrived back in Tenerife our luggage was taken from the ship to the airport and was effectively in transit and didn't "enter" Tenerife so we were able to have the allowance of 3200.

I actually called HM Customs and Excise and had them confirm this before I did it and they gave me a reference number of the call in case of any problems. Had we been on a cruise and stay with a week in Tenerife after the cruise we wouldn't have been able to do it.

Thanks for your reply - the gun is not loaded LOL

I would be very careful about that. The cigs allowance you can bring back from Turkey is £200. The example given by the person on the cruise is that weren't classified as having been in Tenerife but rather in transit. If you go on a boat trip to Rhodes and bring back cigs, you re-enter Turkey with the allowance and so are bringing the cigs back into the UK from Turkey. Therefore the allowance from Turkey is what you can bring back - 200.

This is getting very confusing because I realise what you are saying but I have also been told by someone that they brought back cigarettes from Kos into Turkey and then on to the UK and when they went through customs the customs officers were miffed when they tried to confiscate them because the person had kept the receipt and therefore proved that they had paid EU tax. I don't know what to do now!!!
