Flight Only / Airline and Airports

I was under the impression that they did not weigh hand luggage and was only bothered about the size.

I don't think all airlines weigh hand luggage, unless it looks a bit heavy. Our hand luggage was weighed at Alicante a couple of weeks ago.

Leyland Lass,

All airlines are starting to clamp down on hand luggage and weighing is starting to become the norm, especially now that many only take hand luggage to avoid the checked-in baggage charges. A bulging bag will often raise suspicion and lead to weighing whereas a small bag that is obviously well within limits wont. Excess baggage charges are being applied more thoroughly as airlines struggle to keep afloat. There's also the safety aspect; overhead storage areas on aircraft have a designed weight limit (A319 / 737 normally about 25-30kg but depends on aircraft type) and space is often at a premium. The rules are there for more that just making a few extra £££. The last thing you want is the locker opening during turbulence or landing because it's bulging and too heavy and dropping on someone.

Hi,

Can I assume it is still ok to take small cases with wheels- within the size range-as hand luggage?

JeanM,

As long as it's within the hand luggage limits (details on EZY's website), that's fine.

I was under the impression that as long as you didn't go over your total baggage allowance, each individual bag could weigh over 20kg - we have booked to take 3 cases between 4 of us but we have a weight limit of 80kg between us so we should be able to have about 25kg for each case.

So, as long as we don't take more than 20kg each we should be ok? Is that correct or have I got it wrong?

Also I can't find anywhere saying about a weight for hand luggage.

Sorry, I just realised I already had the answer to the hand luggage question :whoops

Hi Kedi - I've just taken this off the Easy jet web site

The maximum weight for any single piece of baggage is 32kg.

Sorry for being stupid now but we are also a party of four who have paid for three cases to go in the hold and thought that the 80kg between us was therefore an error :duh

So what can each case weigh up to then?(sorry to be so stupid and I have indeed read the info over and over again but still fail to understand it) :(

Stardust2000,

To Be Within Easyjets Limits And To Avoid Extra Charges, You Will Be Allowed 3 Bags (As That Is What You Have Payed For) Each Weighing 20kg, A Combined Total Of 60kg's. No Bag Must Exceed 32kg

Thanks Gower :)

That's how I understood it, the other recent posts regarding an up to 25kg confused me somewhat :duh

Easyjet have axed the year round Newcastle-Prague route and moved the aircraft onto the new seasonal Newcastle-Malta service

I may need to change a flight, rebook, same destination different departure airport. What are Easyjet charging for this? I understand I will have to pay the difference in price of original booking.

I am still confused about the baggae allowance - sorry if I am being dim here :duh

I have just had a look again at the Easyjet website because, as I said before I thought that if we had 80kg we could spread it over 3 bags without getting charged excess as we still are only taking 20kg each, even if the 3 bags weigh more than 20kg each

But Gower has now said we should only be taking 60kg

Anyway this is the link :

http://easyjet.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/easyjet.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=4&p_created=1074004664&p_sid=RISNQuwj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MjYsMjYmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3BhZ2U9MSZwX3NlYXJjaF90ZXh0PWhvbGQgYmFnZ2FnZQ**&p_li=&p_topview=1

Can someone tell me who is right, because if two people can take one bag weighing 32 kg, then we should be able to take 3 bags weighing 25kg each shouldn't we :que

I don't want to end up paying excess but if we do have 80 kg I want to be able to make use of it!

Sorry again, I am probably confusing everyone else now

Kedi you only have a hold allowance if you have paid for one . In other words you have only paid for 3 hold allowances = 60KG . It doesnt matter how many of you are travelling or whos luggage goes in which case . You will though be able to take hand luggage for 4 which within reason I dont believe easyjet weigh as long as the bag conforms to their hand luggage dimensions. According to that link it would appear that they still allow the" pooling "of baggage allowance which some airlines no longer allow so you could have one case that weighs more than 20KG but no more than 32KG as long as the 3 didnt go over the 60KG.

If hubby and I are just travelling with easy for a weekend I normally just pay for 1 hold bag between the two of us but that then only allows us the 20KG.

If our whole family of 5 are travelling I usually add on 2/3 bags but nowadays I try to keep bags within 20KG just because so many airlines wont allow you to "pool" anymore

Does that make sense.

Yes, it does make sense but this is what it actually says on our booking:

"3 Hold bag(s) per flight between all passengers combined
The 4 passenger(s) in this booking may check in a combined total of 3 hold bag(s) for each flight on this booking. The total hold weight must not exceed 80 kg. Selecting additional bags to check in won't increase the total hold weight allowed."

I think I am going to email Easyjet just to be sure, I will let everyone know what they say. I don't think we will actually carry more than 20kgs in each case anyway but I would like to be sure.

I think you may have a wait if you email them, it would be much easier just to print off the page from the link you supplied earlier and take it with you when you fly. I think you are right and the others are wrong (sorry!) and that you have stumbled on to an interesting point. As touched on by others, many airlines don't allow pooling but, from the link, it seems that easyjet do. It clearly shows - in pictures - that 2 people can pay for one bag and fill it to the 32kg safe lifting limit (see below).

Their policy is that EVERYONE gets 20kg free allowance for carrying in the plane but there is charge per bag for handling at the airports. So your group of 4 gets 80kg as it says in the reservation email and you can split it between 3 bags and only pay 3 airport handling charges as long as none weigh more than 32kg.

Their various weight limits are;

20kg - individual free carriage allowance
50kg - individual maximum carriage allowance (20 free, 30 paid as excess at £9 per kg)
32kg - internationally recognised safe manual lifting limit for one person - after this they would have to wait for a second baggage handler or a fork lift and that would upset their system and delay loading.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The link with the pictures is currently dated 13 February 2009, anyone reading this later than now (April) should recheck it just in case easyjet realise they could make more money by falling in line with other carriers.
