I am a terrible flyer, but strangely, I don't really mind take off and landing. I can't say I love them, but they don't make me fret. I prefer landing than taking off, possibly because when we start bumping about, I can see the clouds that cause it. And I've never landed in Manchester without that rollercoaster feeling!
Don't like flying at all and it has taken me 12 years to stop crying at take-off and landing! Now I just close my eyes and dig my nails into the palms of my hands........ still, if I didn't fly I couldn't go back to Turkey so I have learned to live with it.
Hi there, magicbreadcrumb here! Ive only flew once in the past and I find take off so bad that I close my eyes tightly Apart from that I love looking out the window at the views once im up in the air.I hope to get a window seat next time xx

Thats almost me except I do still cry at take off. It was really embarrassing the year I was sat with a family who had 4 kids, they were all laughing, joking and cheering and I was sat there blubbering like a baby :).
Once Im up there I am fine, and I love looking out of the window when coming into land. Its just take off that gets me - every time.
Oh well, I deal with it and it is a means to an end. Its always worth it and I do like my holidays
Regarding flying. I hate take off and landing, that horrible sensation in your stomach as it lifts, as if you are going to be sick. I tend to grip the arm rests, close my eyes and puff and pant quickly. I expect other people look at me gone out!! Landing is the same. When the plane banks, and those bits when its climbing and getting lower, and the plane seems to drop, your belly is all over the place. What I really hate is when you think you are going to land when suddenly the plane starts climbing again, for another approach.
I get bored in the middle bit, and just want to get off!!
Other than that I'm fine!!
Regards
Dawnie-Rob
flying holds no fear for me..as they say in the RAF.. if you walk away its a good landing..
Another nervous flyer here as people who frequent HT's will know from last year. Now when I am trying to gee myself up for my hols in 2 weeks, I have read of a pilot grounded for smelling of alcohol, a plane being damaged by bird strike and now a plane having to turn back after flying into a swarm of bees. Wonder what else will happen in the next 2 weeks ?
Does anyone have any advice for claustrophobics?
I don't fear flying for the reasons most people do. I don't worry about crashing or anything like that, but I get really worked up before the flight and have to work really hard at not panicing during the flight. I hate the thought of not being in control. I don't like being in enclosed spaces and feel that I just need to get out. I haven't always felt like this- but the last couple of times I've flown I've gotten really panicky.
I'm starting to worry already as I've a 10 and a half hour flight to Mexico ahead of me this year.
Has anyone got any advice on how to avoid this please?
Thanks
Hi again I have now replaced months of excitment with sick with fear and im getting into a right state including shaking, butterflies in stomach etc. I remember also cluching the arm rests at take off! In the departure lounge I could not stop my knees from knocking as well as been on the brink of tears As for the queston on clastrophobia, sorry to hear how you feel, the only advice I can offer is to buy some rescue remendys or other herbal drops as I find these very soothing when in a panic. ps Im clastrophobic when it comes to lifts as im scared I will get trapped, its so bad I dont use them at all. good luck from magicbradcrumb xx
Not sure if it will help but ask for a seat towards the back of the plane, that way you have much more visual space in front of you.
It's the only I can think off.
Dave
Hi Shirley, I'm exactly the same although it is getting easier with each flight I take. I agree with Dave's advice and also make sure you get an aisle seat.
I'm claustrophobic too, but find a window seat helps me because I can look outside and try to forget I'm in a small space with all those people! My last flight was a nightmare...centre seats on a 747...the person in front of me with their seat at maximum recline...happy I was not! If you do start to panic though, best thing is relaxation exercises and concentrating on breathing slowly...helps me!
As an air traffic controller for 20 years, I think I am fairly well qualified to offer some perspective on the saftey of flying.
I reckon I must have seem milllions of flights over the years on radar screens. How many have crashed? None.
I have 'worked' planes that have suffered catastrophic failures and they always land - the pilots are simply outstanding. we are pretty good at what we do to
Please, don't worry - it is fun!
Any questions?

Hi magicbreadcrumb here! Ive only flew once before, that was Nov 2005.Once up in the air I love it,I guess its because its still a new experiance for me .Take off I dread as I hate the feelings it gives me,I guess I will always dread that im ashamed to say Also I have only done short haul so dont have time to get bored.Long haul I have not done yet, will one day! ps also heard of "air pockets" dont know much on that but sounds scarey if the plane sudenly falls so many feet down, that I am afraid of also xx
A good article that explains it is here: (it is a good site in general, for those afraid to fly!)
http://www.fearless-flight.com/flight-safety/air-turbulence.php
I have only experienced it once and that was last summer over Cuba en route to Jamaica. This was probably due to hot air rising from the land creating an eddy of air that we were unfortunate to fly through.

Hi Seasider53,I found your reply very comforting to read! Thanks very much on the details you gave,it made me understand the workings of a plane more.Ive only flying to europe so hopefully air pockets will properly be less common. magicbreadcrumb xx ps one last queston please ..Will my swimming earplugs be as effective as Earplane plugs as the design looks the same? xx
Also to the Easy-Jet Pilot who gave me so much help also, could do with some encouragement. The particular holiday I am contemplating booking is through First Choice, but the flight from Cardiff uses Onur Air, which I have heard little about. Worried as there is apparentkly on entertainment on board etc, and can find out nothing about this airline. Can you help at all? Sue
I went on the confident flying course at East Midlands and they helped me to identify which part of flying I didnt like and it was in fact the take off and the lurch in my stomach (as perfectly described in one post above). So, when I get to the end of the runway and the pilot is ready to go, I put my fingers in my ears discreetly, close my eyes, sit back in my seat and count ... one (breath in) two (breath out) until I get to one hundred, by this time, we're up and it makes me feel so much more relaxed. Works for me!
I've got diazepam tablets from the doc this year to help with the panic, sweating and racing heartbeat so i'll report back how i get on with them! although i'd really like to overcome it altogether but i cant afford a fear of flying course and there are none close to me either :(
