The pilots did a brilliant job

Indeed they did. It's very lucky it's just an area of grass which got carved up, it could have been houses, cars on the road - it doesn't bear thinking about. Also good to know nobody at all was seriously hurt :-o
Every time I get on a plane I worry about the possibilities, but you just have to trust the skills and judgement of the pilots, otherwise you'd never go anywhere.

as the old saying goes.. any landing you can walk away from is a good one... :think

this incident just goes to show what we always say the crew skills of aircraft flying in Europe is first rate :tup

Hi Everyone

Sorry to go :offtop but my wife hadn't flown for about 11 yrs before we went to majorca 4 yrs ago.All her family were saying I was mad to take her on a plane cos I hadn't had the expierience of flying with her.She went to the dr and got some diazapam but it did not calm her down that much.
The year after we went to lanzarote and before we went she bought some phenergan in boots and they worked a treat :tup
They are supposed to be an antihistimene but can also be used as a relaxer, she takes 2 25mg tablets half hour before take off and there's no problem with flying.
We are going to Goa for the 2nd time in April which is a 10 hour flight and she has got no problem getting on the plane and I wont hear a peep out of her for the whole 10 hours :rofl :rofl

HI, Is it ok to have a couple of drinks with phernagan. Whilst at the airport, I enjoy a couple of glasses of wine (only 2). Does it state on the antihistamines that no alcohol should be consumed. Thanks
also, did they make your wife dopey :duh I mean, I wouldn't want them to make me tired enough to sleep.

Please folks, can I ask once again that discussion about any medications and their possible side effects takes place with your GP or pharmacist based on your own medical history, rather than with other holidaymakers whose advice may be inappropriate as their medical history and reaction to certain medications may be totally different.

Many thanks

Sorry Dave,
but I thought that as she bought the Phernagan over the counter at boots and it isn't a prescription medication I'd be ok in asking what it said on the packet. My apologies if I've strayed :offtop

Hi Everyone,

Here we go again!! Its that time of year again. Having not flown for over 30 years, have taken a few shorthaul holidays in the last 3 years, but going to Florida in 3 weeks and the "tummy has started". Not sure what to make of this longhaul flight (9 hours apparently), going with Virgin. Is going on a bigger plane really going to make much difference - I am not convinced! Taking Diazepam with me again, but wondered if coming back on the night flight it might be better to take something to help me sleep instead, i.e. melatonin (recommended by Doctor, that I can buy in States), Night Nurse or Phenergan seems to work for some people. Any of you regulars out there able to offer any advice on this, or any 'calming' words in this most stressful time. Thanks loads. Sue.x

As someone who hates flying, but has been on an 11 hour flight to Vegas twice a year for the past few years, I can thoroughly recommend sleeping! I'm not afraid of flying, I just don't like it and find it extremely boring.

I tried melatonin, but it didn't do anything for me as I took a very low dose incase it knocked me for six. Might have had better luck with a much higher dose than the 2mg I took.

It just happens that I take regular medication which makes me drowsy so I now take it after the first meal so that it knocks me out.

It isn't really recommended that you sleep for long periods on flights due to the risk of DVT so make sure you have flight socks which should help.

I have been prescribed 2mg diazepam to take 2 hours before the flight by my GP, after reading the posts on this sight it doesnt seem enough?

Believe me, its not. I have been given 2mg to take (1 at check-in, and another 1 when on the plane) and I dont feel any different. Have just picked up some 5mg this week as due to fly on Tuesday, have tried them and think they are much better. So will probably take 5mg at check-in and another 5mg when on plane. Hope that helps.

Sorry Pat, but that really is a question which should be put to your GP, rather than to other holidaymakers. This topic is really only intended as a discussion about the fear of flying. Medical or medication questions (and answers) are best left to the professionals.

Many thanks

I'm flying for the first time this summer and am totally terrified. Might have been better to start off with a short flight than one to Malaysia :yikes

yes now you feel, im flying in a couple of months... worst part for me is when the doors are shut, I know then, I cant do anything about!!

You wouldn't want them to fly with the doors open! :rofl

Seriously though, try to relax and think positive!!

I'm not gonna go into statistics because if you have a fear then it doesn't matter if there was an accident only once every ten years, you'd convince yourself it will be you!

You will be fine - relax and enjoy your holidays :tup

Absolutely no reason to be... modern airframes are strong well maintained and flown by well trained experienced crews, they will not take a craft in the air if they have any doubts about its worthiness, don't start fretting as you will only make yourself worse.. start now thinking what fun it will be what a new experience you going to have and how much you are looking forward to it....

you will be absolutely safe and fine, when you get home you will wonder why you had your doubts,, A POSITIVE ATTITUDE will bring you through

Hi,

Having read many of the posts, I can fully understand where many of you are coming from - by way of (hopefully) encouragement, I had not flown at all prior to 2 years ago. I knew all the ins and outs (having worked for years for a radar manufatcurer and attending commercial airshows) but could never get up the courage to fly in one of the things!.

But two years ago, I HAD to travel on business and kicked off my flying with a night flight to Reykjavik of all places. Since then, you can't keep me off 'planes - my advice in a nutshell is DO IT! As many other have said, it's safe as houses these days, and you (like me) will wonder why you never did it before once you see all the places you can get to with ease.........

Hi,

I can completely understand why people are anxious about flying, most of the people I know hate it and one of my friends won't go on holiday if she has to go on a plane. But I love it. I'm not keen on taking off and landing but other than that I love looking out the window and having some time for myself, to relax and de-stress ready for my holiday! I remember to take lots of books and puzzles and can't go anywhere without my iPod!

It also helps that I have a friend who is a pilot and she's explained about turbulance (perfectly safe) and other things which helps me stay calm and quite enjoy it (yes I know I'm strange!). But she is someone who flies every day. She wouldn't put herself in danger, or those who she was flying, if there was anything to be worried about. It definitely helped me and a couple of my friends a bit talking to someone who does this all the time so would recommend talking to airline crew about your concerns.
