We normally visit Goa towards the end of the season in March and to be honest we have definitely noticed some nasty niffs up behind some of the shacks. I think that it is unlikely that many shack owners would go to the expense of putting in septic tanks due to the recurring problems they appear to have in obtaining their licences most years. If some do, then I stand corrected but I think it is more likely to be just as Gramps says. I would agree that a lot of shack owners have made a real effort over the years to provide what appears to be (if only on the surface) clean toilet and hand washing facilities and this has made a great difference to which of the shacks gets the most business (specially from us Brits)! I just hope that when the rough seas of the monsoon season arrive any leached deposits are washed away.
first you dig a square hole about 5 feet x 5 feet and about 6 feet deep, you then line it with concrete and simply put rubble on the floor to allow the contents to drain away and top it with a cement floor to hold the toilet bowl,
This has really caught my imagination here.
I've never had one - but I've always understood that if a septic tank is working properly, then the good bacteria in the tank eat all the bad bacteria, and the only by-product is clean water which runs off. The tank then gets cleaned out once a year to remove any solids.
Are you saying that these shack owners dig a new pit every year? If that's so then the loo would be in a different position every year. They must be running out of space on the beach by now.
If you use the same shack yearly you will no doubt notice it is located on the same spot year on year, and the toilet pedestal is removed with the rest of the shack, at seasons end and put back on the same concrete float each year I can assure max that no attempt is made to clean out the residue at seasons end as there is no way of removing the contents. However if anyone wishes to believe that all the shacks have installed up to the minute septic tanks and are following the procedures attached to the same running of these, thats fine by me, everyone is entitled to their views Alan
