I was wondering if it's ok to take tablets with you like paracetamol and other medication in tablet form. We have someone with Epilepsy in our group and will be carrying his medication in his hand luggage. Should this be ok without having to get a letter from the doctor?

Mdollar,

It's fine to take medication in hand luggage. The only restriction is the quantity you can take; it should be limited to the amount you need for travel along with a reserve in case of delay or lost luggage. The rest should be packed in your suitcase. You only need a doctors certificate if you're carrying a restricted medicine or needles etc.

Wow that was a quick reply Darren, thanks! That's ok then, I've already got a doctors certificate for one as we'll be taking needles and insulin but I wasn't sure about any other medictation. :tup

Many thanks to Julie and David for your quick responses. I have also contacted Boots airside at Liverpool airport to check the opening times as we fly out at 6.05am and thankfully they open at 4.30 am so I will buy everything before we board the plane. I'm sure it will be cheaper than having to pay excess baggage charges as it was an extra £60.00 round trip to take suitcases anyway (the flights were only £40.00 round trip for the 2 of us)!!. Thanks again

Sad to say but I havent flown for 4 years (family probs), we used to take a cool bag with bacon ,cheese and a few tin meats , can we still take them to Almeria in the new year as my hand luggage, flying with Monarch, :que

Hi boomersdad ... under current hand luggage restrictions (details on page 1), cooler bags containing ice or gel packs are not permitted.

Thanks for that David, but if I remember rightly I used to take the bag to the special article desk and it went in the hold ,if not can I just take the food frozen, :que

Came back from Spain on Tuesday and there was so much hand luggage that it couldn't all fit in the overhead storage so several passengers, having boarded, saw their bags / cases taken off and placed in the hold for collection from the carousel on landing.

From what we could see nobody was taking more than 1 item but many of the bags were clearly over the stated size but I guess nobody at the boarding gate was checking this. The plane was full so that didn't help either.

Can i take my laptop with me in my handluggage? I will be flying with RyanAir to Tenrerife next month.

Thanks.

p.s. what happens at security, i assume theres a special procedure to go through xray so it wont get damaged?

thanks again

Yes you can take it as hand luggage. Never put in in the hold as it won't be covered by insurance.

Remember that you are only allowed one piece of hand luggage so if you take a laptop bag, you can't take a handbag as well.

At security you need to take it out of its bag and put it through on its own in one of the trays.

Hi Luci, thanks for clearing that up.
I did have a look on ryanair website, and it does say that it is classed as one peice of hand luggage if it is in a bag.

Do you know those small suitcases which you get out of a set of suitcases, could i use one of those as a peice of handluggage, so long as it is under 10kg? or should i get my tape measure out to be sure?

To be on the safe side, I think you should get your tape measure out Nicola. In addition to the generous 10kg hand luggage allowance with Ryanair, the one item of hand luggage should not exceed 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, or any lower dimensions which may be imposed by any airport that you are using.

Thanks Dave, i actually found 2 tape measures whilst cleaning out the garage last weekend. I knew they would be useful one day :D

Do be very careful of the 20cm side not easy to keep to and a lot of baggage that is sold as hand luggage will not be within that size.

.......and also remember whatever you buy airside will also have to go into hand luggage. A couple of bottles of water, the odd sandwich or 2 (cheaper in Boots than on the plane!), newspapers, mags, bag of M&Ms ! etc etc do take up lots of room.
