Hmm, after thinking about it, it does make sense.. afterall, ryanair sell flights very cheap, but thomascook dont charge 5pounds for flights do they.

but i thought they weigh your hand luggage before you get to the shops? or do they weigh it again before you board the aircraft?

no but by the time you add all the taxes and charges for a normal holiday maker [with hold baggage] they are not always the cheapest

True, but i was quoted nearly 140pounds to tenerife for a flight with thomascook, with 15kg hold luggage, 5kg hand luggage, no inflight meals, and i got quoted just over 80pounds for a flight on the same day, to the same place, with 15kg hold luggage, 10 kg hand luggage. So ryanair are cheaper for me :)
Just hope the prices dont go up by next week .

With online check-in and hand luggage only, you don't see anyone from Ryanair until you get to the gate. It's at that point those in excess or suspected of being in excess of the rules will be asked to measure / weigh hand luggage. Anything in excess of the rules will be placed in the hold with relevant changes, or refused travel. As I mentioned, you can't really compare the likes of Thomas Cook to low cost carriers because they operate different models.

Only seen hand luggage weighed on the odd ocassion where someone has also checked in hold luggage at the normal checkin desks.

If you are only taking hand luggage and going direct to the boarding gate it will not be weighed - well I go with Ryanair every month and not seen scales at any boarding gate, yet !

I have had my hand luggage checked for size at Security once - a story I rather not go into !

However, if you get to the gate and your hand luggage looks large it will be checked and if too large prepare to leave the queue you have joined early to get the best seats - leave stuff behind, or fill every pocket you have and then rejoin the queue after the masses have already joined the plane or even go to the checkin desk and pay for it to go as hold luggage at great cost and maybe miss the flight.

Know the rules and follow them - trust me, been there, done it !

I will be checking in hold baggage. I am not too bothered, as the last few holidays we have had, we have only actually carried one peice of hand luggage for the 3 of us, and this was my handbag which had our travel documents, mp3 player, book for my son and a couple of sandwiches from boots.

This time we will be taking our laptop, which will be classed as one peice of hand luggage. Im presuming a laptop will weigh less than 10kg, and be under the measurements that ryanair state? :rofl

I will be taking my handbag which will store our travel documents, money etc, and i may fit a couple of sandwiches in.

That will leave 2 peices of hand luggage available, as my brother is coming a long too, so we will use one of these for the suncream, shampoo from boots, and a few other bits.

Daz, although I haven't seen that happen yet, I thought that would be the case but surely it could hold up boarding, leading to flight delays. Imagine if they stop even 10 passengers at the gate - the delays and arguments it would cause!
P.S.We are amazed by the size of hand luggage that people take on board and I am sure that they will tighten up on that one day! We try to stick to the limit because I hate to think that we might be one of the unlucky ones and get pulled up and if that happened, the alternative would be pay up or dump items because even when we have suitcases, they would be on the plane!

I know what you mean about the size of hand luggage. The amount of times I have seen people with huge sports bags as hand luggage and then proceed to take up most of the room in the overhead compartments (but don't get me started on the overhead compartment thing - that's another thread). When told their bag is too large to go into the frame, they just squish it up and force it into the frame. Once through security they then go shopping in the duty free shop and fill their bag up with things from there.

There is a post on the Ryanair section where they did make extensive checks at Valencia and the flight was delayed.

I was on the flight the week earlier from Valencia and no checks were not done at the boarding gate but due to the large amount of oversized hand luggage the flight was delayed as several pieces of hand luggage could not be stored in the cabin and had to be placed in the hold.

At Liverpool in October, there was a Spanish guy trying to get his bag on the plane. Kept taking stuff out and trying again, more stuff out, try again etc etc. It was clear that the person at the gate was not going to budge - looked for the guy on the palne but didn't see him..........

Does anyone know if the liquids rule applies at Heathrow as well as at Stanstead? Before when ive flown from heathrow (im going to Australia via Hong Kong) I've been allowed an A4 size plastic bag to put everything in, however at stanstead more recent for European flights ive only been allowed a bag half this size, just wondered if anyone knew the score on travelling outside Europe and liquids, I do know they all have to be under 100 ml, just wondering about the amount we're allowed, thanks.

Heathrow has the same rules as Stansted. Long haul the same as short haul. 1 plastic bag 20cmx20cm containing small bottles up to 100ml each, total amount allowed 1000mls. Has been in effect for a few years now.
Check out http://www.heathrowairport.com

Bunny230,

The rules are in force through Europe, America and in many places beyond. You'll find the full regulations on page 1 of this thread.

Quick up-date. Thomas Cook at Tenerife yesterday - they weigh hand luggage after the suitcases have gone through -so if you have exceeded 5kilos, you just have to pay up.
The weight seems more important than the size - still some travellers have hand luggage larger than advised and seem to get away with it. It was difficult to get our bags (which were well within the guideline) into the overhead lockers above us due to this.
If there were stricter regulations regarding size and weight which we all had to adhere to at least then we would all know where we were and there would be no need for this topic! :rofl

SomersetSuzie,

That is done in case your suitcase is over your checked-in limit and you have the oportunity to remove items and place in hand luggage, if you have the capacity. That's uniform with most airlines. I would say the regulations are fine as they are, it's the inconsistancy in the application of them. Up to a few years ago, you knew you could get away with a little extra here or there. Now things have been tightened up, some airports and check-in staff / handling agents are less stict than others. To me, that's where the problem lies as you get passengers that chance it.

Hi,
Can anyone tell me if when you travel with Jet2com if in addition to your 22kg of hold luggage you also have a max. 10kg of hand baggage therefore a combined total of 32kg or does your hand baggage allowance get subtracted from your hold baggage. Thanks in advance of any replies.

The jet2 website makes it clear that if you've paid for checked in baggage then you're allowed 22kgs with a free 10kgs of hand luggage on top but be warned. We travelled in October with Jet2 to Tenerife from Manchester - from memory they weren't fussed about weighing handluggage at Manchester but they did insist on everything being put into the 'cage' to check that it was below the maximum size allowed. We saw people being made to check-in over-sized hand luggage which entailed having to go to the main Jet2 passenger info desk to queue to pay for the extra checked in a baggage in advance and then having to queue all over again at check-in. From what I can see on their website, this is going to cost you £25 pounds per bag that you have to check-in and hasn't been pre-paid and if it takes you over 30kgs of checked in baggage in total then it will cost you a further £10 per kilo. No wonder some of them were extremely cheesed off at getting caught trying to pass off a too large bag as hand luggage!

At Tenerife on the way back, they were not only checking size but also weight of hand luggage too.

NEW SECURITY MEASURES FOR TRAVELLERS TO THE US

In light of recent events, the US Transportation Security Administration has introduced a series of new or additional security measures.

With immediate effect, travellers to the US should now expect additional security measures at their departure airport and on board the flight. These measures are being described as 'unpredictable' in nature and so passengers may not see the same measures applied on every day, at every airport, or on board every flight.

However, one significant change is that those airlines or airports which had been allowing two pieces of hand luggage will now only permit one, and that should include any duty free or airside shopping. Hand luggage will be subject to the usual security screening before entry to the departure lounge, but may now be subject to an additional search at the departure gate. Delays are already being experienced at some airports, as passengers turn up with more hand luggage than is now being allowed, which they then have to dispose of or include with their checked baggage for the hold.

Passengers will still be subject to the usual security screening before entry to the departure lounge, but may now be subject to an additional 'pat-down' search before boarding.

Changes during the flight may include passengers having to remain seated during the final hour of the flight, with no access to toilets or hand luggage during that time. In flight entertainment and some flight announcements (such as those giving precise location or pointing out landmarks) may now cease during that final hour of the flight.

Bearing in mind that these new measures have been urgently implemented during the festive holiday period, there may be further revision in the coming days, with some airlines and airports as yet still to update their websites.
