Would it be possible to place a link on the country page direct to the review section? Strangers coming onto the site to view see for example - Spain - Canary Islands - Lanzarote Discussion Forums - Amongst the various topics discussed on that section of the forum they will see some hotels named, and discussion about them. Do they then assume that is all the information there is?

I know we have a heading for Hotel Reviews but do they actually see that? Consider how many times someone posts asking about a hotel only for one of us to post a link to the review section. Funny how so often people do not see what is right in front of them.

We already have a link to the individual countries review pages. It is in the banner at the top of the forum (the banner that shows the current weather and RSS links).

Which I admit, I had not noticed. Which also proves what I said, we don't always see what is in front of us.

It takes a little bit of time for the review to be added as they are checked before published.

I've just tried to look at reviews for 4 hotels. The last review for 3 of them was 2005 & one was 2004. Please you lovely folk, take a little time to post your review on your return. They are so helpful to those of us who are still deciding.

Hi,all. I must have started something here! Personally if I am going to a certain place, I go to reviews of that place and read every single review of that area to get tips about distance from centre of things, trips etc. as what one person says can be quite different to what someone else says. I also read all the resort reports and again I find some of these reviews are really old. Keep it going everyone.

I agree Digby - I cross a lot of place on my list of "good prospects" off after reading some bad reviews. Obviously everyone's tastes are different, but if 6 out of ten reviews say the pool is dirty - and the pool is important to you - well!!!

Me too. I love a review. :)

I remember when we had a star system on here for the number of posts you made. I think it took up too much bandwidth so was done away with which is understandable. Also the amount of posts you make doesn't determine the quality of the posts.

However perhaps we could have a system where you have some recognition for reviews posted ?

It might encourage people to make the effort.

Its such a shame as this is probably the best holiday discussion site there is, but the review bit seems to let it down a bit.

My personal opinion is that I'm very happy with the way reviews are set up on this site. The heading Hoel Reviews and Resort Reports should be clear enough for everybody to see. I'm short sighted and get no probs :rofl I also like the way the hotels are listed alphabeticaly. I think the only thing that would improve things for me would be if it was possible to state the number of reviews a property had received (next to the hotel name, rather than having to click on it first).

I rarely use brochures to pick my holiday these days. I browse through various resort reports here and decide on a country then I take weeks reading through hotel reviews on here and Trip Advisor. As Helen says everybody's idea of a great holiday is different but you can at least sift through the facts e.g. how far out from certain places the hotel is, prices of things etc. I'll then price up a few hotels that I like and book accordingly - never actually looking at a brochure as all the facts and photos can be found on line.

This is way it's really important to me and others that people write reviews of every holiday they've returned from. It's certainly one of the first things I do when I get back. Since joining HT all my holidays have been brilliant ;)

With regards the suggestion to have the forum account linked to the number of reviews posted, this is unfortunately not possible as the two sites are hosted on two different servers and can't "talk" to each other automatically.

Thanks for the explanation Mark. I didn't realise that. i was just trying to come up with a way to encourage people to write reviews.

I cross a lot of places on my list of "good prospects" off after reading some bad reviews.

And I cross some places off my list after reading some 'good' reviews, if the things the hotels are praised for are the absolute opposite of what I want on holiday.

Seriously though, it really doesn't take long to post a review on here and considering all the help I've received from HT I feel it's the least I can do. I'm off again on 22nd September and will do my duty on my return. At present my hotel isn't listed but I know the Mods can add it easily enough.

Strangely enough there was an article on the Travel Mail site last week regarding reviews and whether people read them, with particular reference to Trip Advisor. At last reading there was only one person who had responded, stating their preference for HT over TA, as we were unbiased!!

I must admit I never found a problem when I was a "newbie" here five years ago in finding and posting reviews - the reason I found this site in the first place was googling for a review of a hotel in Tenerife and to be honest it was months before I realised that there were FORUMS here as I was so busy reading up on all the different resorts :rofl

I think the format is fine the way it is - maybe some of us "older" members have got a bit complacent (sorry just speaking for myself)..........I tend to answer questions on the forums but I havent posted a review this year yet :( And the newer members are possibly on "looking" for reviews rather than posting?

So now Ive read this Im off to post reviews in Majorca and Crete and hotels in Edinburgh and Liverpool :D
