Well yes, I agree that Gumbet has spread since you last visited 20 years ago but you, Gumbet caters for all ages and all tastes and like many other resorts, it has its lively areas and its quiet areas. The Parkim Ayaz is a good hotel and if you're getting as good deal, then I would go for it.
Many people say "Gumbet, oh it's for 18-30s" - please don't believe them. As I said, it caters for all ages. Yes, there's Bar Street and it is very lively - and really only for the young 'uns. That said, there are loads of other places where you can have a chilled night, meeting people and having a good conversation. It's just a case of making the choice where you want to be. The problem is that some people never leave the centre of Gumbet and go away with the impression that it's all loud music and bright lights - there really is so much more to Gumbet than that. Again, it's just a case of looking where you want to be and exploring more than just Bar Street and its surrounding area.
As for Gumbet and Bodrum being difficult to tell where one ends and the other starts, I would beg to differ. I reckon there's a definite demarcation. To me Gumbet still has a small resort feel, Bodrum is more of a town and busier.
In the original post, the poster didn't specify they wanted a quiet resort - they just asked if it would be too lively for them. My answer would be no - just have a look round and explore the area, there's some lovely bars where you can have a relaxing and enjoyable evening.
Sorry if this post sounds a little defensive but we have a house in Gumbet and visit many times a year and I get a little fed up when people say that it's a young person's resort - we're not young and love the place but I have to admit that we never visit Bar Street -we much prefer the quieter parts of the resort where we meet up with our Turkish friends and also the people we have met over the years who return to Gumbet time and time again.
Hope this has helped, if you need to know any more, just ask.
