Don't forget the downside of this sort of holiday ! Here are a few thoughts ...
Mayo is not known for its dry summers. Think about trundling along in lashing rain .
Many of the side roads are badly potholed. Apart from the N5 routes between Dublin and Castlebar, many of Mayo's roads have only one lane in each direction and nowadays there is a lot of traffic on them ..... you could end up with a long and impatient tailback behind you .
We are also prone to 'ribbon development ' ..you'll find youirself looking at more new houses than interesting scenery in the short distance you'll be able to travel.
On the plus side, yes, it is certainly a different sort of holiday and given sunshine and things to do , could be quite enjoyable. The people in Belcarra sound as if they have things well-organised so that is a good start :)

Hi woodward ... the one thing which would put me off trying that sort of holiday is realising just what little of Mayo you would actually see. The pace would be far too slow for me, I would end up tying the horse to the nearest tree and thumbing a lift to the next town. If you like the prospect of a really slow paced holiday, it may be for you. But if you want to see a fair bit of Mayo, it's perhaps not the best mode of travel.
