We just looked at a winter holiday for later this year. Last year the accommodation alone cost 1280 Euros (910 Pounds at the rate of 1.4). This year they want 1489 Euros (1220 Pounds at the rate of 1.22), that's a whopping 34% increase over one year when measured in Pounds.
I reckon that some businesses in the Euro zone have lost the plot and are heading for an unpleasant surprise when they find they have no takers from the UK.

I take it there's been no inflation in UK for the last year?

Why is it the fault of those in the "eurozone" that the pound is so weak?

We've had increases in fuel, heating, wages etc etc just like you have in the UK. The biggest cause of the inflation you refer to is due to the weakness, yes weakness of the pound. This is something that the British Labour Government needs to address, not something that is the fault of those in the Eurozone.

The arrogance of some British people is breath-taking. Those Hotel rooms which are not being taken by Brits (and there are not many of them) are easily being filled by Italians, French, Germans, Poles, Russians etc etc, none of whom expect us to revise our pricing to accomodate those who presumably simply can't afford a foreign holiday anymore.

I hear Kirkcaldy is very nice at this time of year.

Actually if you read my post properly you will see that the price increased from 1280 to 1489, in itself a huge increase In Euros, exclusive of Pounds. As for Kircaldy, never been there but I much prefer Mallorca, I just don't believe that inflation is responsible for an increase in the Euro price as stated. I have just returned from Germany and while everyone complains about price increases I never did see increases like this. Good luck to you in your business, do Italians, Germans etc like your pub ? If so, then start language lessons.

I'd just like to add my opinion, seeing as I live in the Eurozone and have done so for the past 16 years.

Inflation has hit us ALL, and I am aware that the UK has suffered less in the last few years from the rise in the cost of living than other European countries. I think that we have become complacent and tend to spend money more easily than 15 years ago (when I lost a heck of a lot of money on the house I sold on the UK when I moved over here), and have become used to spending without really considering our outgoings because credit is all too easy. I have to say that some of the quotes for holidays on here, and the exotic destinations gobsmack me because I couldn't afford it, and wouldn't dream of getting into debt for two weeks in the year .......... and Christmas is still to be budgetted for.

I don't really mean to sound like a killjoy, but holiday makers must take responsibility for their spending and their budgets, and if that means changing the destination or duration of the holiday, that's probably better for them than overspending and casting a shadow over what should be a breath of fresh air ...........

Unpleasant? Moi?

I've vented my spleen in a PM to Mr Pollensa (although I don't think he actaully lives there) and I intend to be as pleasant as pleasant can be.

The Stadium in Palma Nova puts on high cost entertainment, and they cover the cost with high priced drinks. I'm not defending it, it's just what they do. The sort of Cabaret they employ costs many hundreds of Euros, and although I've only been in the place once, it was packed out. We thought the price of drinks were high, but obviously the other punters thought it was worth it.

The point I was trying to make is that there has been inflation in Europe as well, and although it's never welcome, the increase to Spanish, Italian, French, Portugese etc is only in line with inflation in their own countries, so holidaying here is not particuarly expensive. It seems dear to the Brits, because the exchange rate is bad, but that's not our fault.

As it happens, we have resisted the temptation of increasing our prices this year, even though virtually everything I buy has gone up, and we're keeping very busy. Other Bars have increased their prices, and are suffering reduced turnover from British customers. As a previous poster suggests - you shop around.

However there is an increasing number of tourists from other countries in the Eurozone and Eastern Europe, and I understand virtually every bed in Magalluf and Palma Nova is sold until October. So we diversify and attract customers from other Nations - their money is just as valuable to us.

For your information, Pollensa1946, I employ staff from various countries, and between us we speak maybe 10 different languages, so no language courses needed, although thanks for your concern.

Yep, he did, and if the readers of this forum were to see the stuff he wrote not many would care to visit his business.

:whoops It's very sad when it comes to slagging one another off, we are all entitled to an opinion and we should all respect each others right to express it.

Correct, David.

There are some forum members who just can't wait to dive down people's throats at the slightest opportunity. Pity because this particular forum is patronised by happy-go-lucky, helpful, holiday types.

I agree with both the above comments. I think, objectively, that a search of this forum will show that I contribute significantly, and 99.9% positively, to this forum, with the occasional lapse into negativity and complaints. The venom I have received from Goodfellow has made me think that it's sometimes not worthwhile contributing at all. If you, Goodfellow, think I am being unfair on you let's publish the PM's we've exchanged and let the readers judge who's the more balanced contributor.
Over and out.
