We had our holiday to Tenerife cancelled last month because of the volcanic ash cloud. However we have about £200 worth of euros which hub had bought before the holiday was cancelled.
Should we hang on to them in readiness for our next holiday (if the UK bank balance can stand it, and the ash cloud ever disperses )
or change them back to Sterling? Come to think of it we've got a €100 travellers cheque too left over from last summer.
I wondered if the Euro crisis in Greece will affect the exchange rate?
(Mods - sorry if this should have been in the "Travellers cheques and Currency" sticky)
Thanks
The cheques are a different matter, if your bank allows commision free buy back you'd probably get closer to what you paid last summer.
And I'm afraid the ash cloud may be around longer than the Greek problem!
hi....you may need to watch out with the travellers cheque incase it has an expiry date....I never bother change the unused currency back to sterling....by the time you pay commission ect...and the fact that the rate they buy it back at is usually lower than the rate they sell it for....you loose out ...and then next time you need it you pay commission ect all over again ...its a loss loss situation....I take the view if you got it changed you meant to spend it ...so I class it as spent soon as I change it... any left over foriegn currency is just put away with the cases and forgotten about till next time....I overestimated things over these last few years... I took all euros last time as travellers cheques were not a real option for me.....didnt have a clue about how much I needed ...and when eating out only cost half what I thought it did ....and I found out I could only bring 5 pouches of tobbaco back for hubby instead of the 20 I had planned....I was surprised at how much I had left over ...but I just put it away towards this years holiday spends.....then I decided to junk out in spare room...have loads of cases filled with holiday clothes or spare clothes.....surprise surprise ...I found more euros I had put away over these last 3 yrs....been going twice a year.....and taking what ever cases that suited the trip....all in all as were going AI I dont need get any more euros as all together I have found in the cases stashed away and forgotten about 1500 euros....surprised me too...was in bags I had used just for hols...and in the pockets of the cases where I had put it for safe keeping....then taken different cases...some was in holdall pocket...and we last used then for when we used the coaches about 4 years ago...... got a great deal for my hols as well ...tweetie
I think we'll hang on to them....it's hardly enough to make a huge difference.....
and I don't think the travellers cheque has an expiry date
@ you finding 1500 euros tweetie-pie......that's a great holiday nest-egg
I never change money back but use it on the next holiday. The first money I changed up in Tunisia this time was the Danish Kroner brought back a couple of months ago.
Also have just found some Deutschmarks!! I lost a wallet several years ago and it miraculously turned up when having a clear out for redecorating. Fortunately am off to Germany in a couple of weeks, so I'll be searching for a bank that will still change them into Euros.
I suspect I really should keep them as I keep going over to Euroland off late
hi....since the euro it makes sense to just keep leftover currency....as there are so many countries now you can use the euro in....in the last 2 years Ive been mainland spain ....mainland greece .....gran caneria .... and rhodes .............this year Im off to gran caneria again then sicily.....so wouldnt have made sense to change them......tweetie
