It's a while since I went to Kefalonia and we stayed in Argostoli the main town. This was pretty flat and would be quite busy in summer but the beach was a way away, in Lassi I think it was called, and there were steep paths down to the beach.

We did hire a car but from memory most of the places we visited had quite steep paths down to the beach.

If it is a choice between Menorca and Kefalonia I would pick Menorca every time; the beaches are far superior and Mahon and Ciudidela are far more interesting places than Argostoli.

Good hunting.

I would recommend Agia Efimia (you can book it thorugh Olympic).

We stayed there last September. It's a lovely little harbour town, very flat with some nice places to eat. It's a great place to stay on the island as it's really easy to get about from there if you hire a car. Depending on what interests you there is a dive centre there, places to hire boats and a ferry a few times a week which takes you to various places.
The beaches around there are pebbly but to be honest I liked this much better than the sand. You'll need shoes to walk on it but you can buy mattresses locally for a small amount and ours lasted us for the 2 weeks. There are plenty of other beaches to reach by car (Myrtos and Anti Samos spring to mind). If you like snorkelling the water around the island is really clear and we often fed the fish in Agia Efimia standing in the water.
The island itself was lovely - although I would recommend that you hire a car to make the most of it. You can see just about everything the rep would try to sell you, it's far cheaper - plus you can go in your own time and turn up at places such as Melassani Lake first thing on a morning and have a boat to yourselves.
Plenty of people seem to like Lassi and Skala but to be honest we found them too touristy - if you want a taste of the real Kafalonia you are better off staying somewhere smaller.

We have visited Kefalonia about 19 times since 1989, we actually adore t he place, we always stay in Lixouri, it is very flat but the beach is about a 2 kilometer walk from the town but you can always get a taxi which are reasonable, Lixouri is a working town and what we like about it you see the Greek people going about there everyday way of life, the children in the school who will run to the railings asking you your name as they are practising thieir English, as we have been so often we are treated just like locals they always say you've come home, The people of Kefalonia are the most friendliest Greeks we have every known we find all Greeks lovely but there is something about Kefalonia once we've been you feel you have to retuirn.

Hi. Sorry to contradict G-Star01, but there is absolutely no comparision betwen Kefalonia and Menorca. Kefalonia is the most stunningly beautiful island. I dont think I have been anywhere with such fantastic scenery. Hiring a car is a must. cos would be a shame to visit and not see everything Kefalonia has to offer. There are lots of resorts but our favourites are Agia Efimia and Sami. Gail

Getting back to the original question. The places in Kefalonia with good beaches such as Lassi, Nea Skala are hilly. A flat place such as Lixouri is an extremely dull town with a long walk to a very mediocre beach. As soon as you leave the sea front anywhere on Kefalonia it is going to be hilly, this would be be true for around 150 greek islands.

Try Tara Beach Hotel in Scala. It is not a hotel as such, more pretty rooms around lovely gardens with a restaurant, bar, pool and bed/breakfast included. Right opposite glorious beach, 2 mins walk to all the tavernas and bars, plenty to do - shops etc. Hire and car and tour the rest of this wonderful island.

Hi G-Star01
We have visited both these islands several times and comparisons are misleading. I agree that the beaches are better in Menorca but the scenery just can't compete. The square in Argostoli has a great atmosphere in the evening but I do find Lixouri pretty dull. In the end one is Spanish and the other is Greek and for us the Greek atmosphere wins it every time.

Go to sami its fantastic! Theres loads to do without being to busy. You really get in to the greek lifestyle! If you go you have to visit the local caves and harbour, theres loads of lush taverners too

Does anyone know of any recommended Private owned 3 bed apartments where you can book direct with the owner?

Thanks

In answer to Vivien`s query, I`m a little bit younger, but I can heartily recommend Kefalonia for any age group, as long as you`re not looking for noisy discos and a rowdy nightlife, because they don`t exist in Kefalonia-yet, and hopefully never will! We stayed at the Marina Bay Studios at Mounda Beach, near Skala. Wonderful sandy beach, but at the bottom of a steep, unmade track(about 3/4 of a mile) leading from the main road. It`s just about walkable, but it`s tough going. I`m afraid I resorted to taxis after just one attempt. The studio apartments were lovely. very clean and comfortable, and only about 100yds from the beach, with a small, but nice, pool, which we had virtually to ourselves, even though it was August. Just one thing,if you don`t like it too hot ,don`t go in August, it was absolutely roasting!!
Skala is very nice, a bit touristy, but not too much so. Can really recommend the PINES restaurant, also PINES 2, down on the beach. Alittle further along the beach road, there`s an open-air restaurant, the name of which I`ve forgotten, with a lovely swimming pool for the use of its customers, and they also show films on a large screen after dark.
``We went on a daytrip, a cruise from Agios Ephemia to Lefkada, taking in some lovely scenery on the way, including dolphins swimming alongside the boat.
Anyway,Vivien, hope you get there and enjoy!!

Thinking of going to Kefalonia next May (2006) for 25th wedding anniversary. We have never been to the Greek Islands before, but love the look of Kefalonia.

I have done some research on different hotels and locations but would love to have some recommendations. A couple that i've looked at are Hotel Mediterannee, Nine Muses, Kefalonia Palace but we are open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance to anyone

We loved Keffalonia but went cheap and cheerful with Kosmar. If you are after something special for your anniversary, have a look at http://www.tapestryholidays.com/ who have some lovely accommodation and often have some good prices for early bookings.

MariaH is right, we have used Tapestry and they do have excellent properties however they are not cheap!! Try The White Rocks hotel just outside Lassi on one of the best beaches in Kefalonia
