Dear Emily,
We went to Scala 3 years ago and found it to be the most expensive Greek Island we have been to in almost 10 years of travelling to Greece. It worked out to be approx. 30% more expensive when comparing it to Samos, Lesbos, Corfu, Skiathos and Zante. However the Island itself is beautiful, with plenty of great Beaches.
Take home message is take plenty of extra cash..... the word discount does not exist in Kefalonia.
Thinking about taking the family for the first time to Kefalonia next summer, trouble is one of our party is disabled and I keep reading about certain properties being 'Up a Hill' ect....can someone help me out please with a named property in a decent resort for a family,if its got plenty of Tavernas all the better, but no Lager louts or rip off merchants please.
Good holidays to you all.
Your best bet would probably be Skala which has a beach and plenty of tavernas. There are some good hotels which are along the beach - the Paspalis is one which gets good reports. Some of the self catering complexes are out of the main area and would involve a climb. There may be some self catering accommodation along the beach.
Kefalonia does not attract the 'lager lout' type and whilst it may be slightly more expensive than Greek Islands it is lovely.
Have a look at Kosmar who are Greek specialists - Portland (TUI group) have the Paspalis and also Thomas Cook.

Hi. I would take a look at Sami or Aghia Efimia. Lassi is ok if you know where your accommodation is. A friend of mine stayed at the Hotel Mediterannee and was very impressed. This hotel is almost on the beach, down a side road from the main road, good service and excellent food (especially at lunchtime). Argostoli is easily accessible from Lassi by taxi or 20ish minute walk and has a lovely square (we spent many an evening there) Happy hols! Gail
We have been looking at Ag. Efimia as well, it seems to be fairly flat but does not have much beach - mostly shingle.

I agree that there are quite a few hotels down by the beach area in Skala, but to get into the main area of Skala where most of the shops and restaurants are will involve going uphill a bit. I`m not disabled, but I`m also not very agile, and Ifound it a bit wearying in the heat of August. The trouble with Kefalonia although a breathtakingly beautiful island, is that most accommodation involves a hill of some kind. The Kosmar book does say when accommodation is unsuitable for the infirm, which is helpful.
The second was much better, a little Corsa, good condition nothing wrong, and a full tank of Petrol.
Which is something to make sure you are going to get when you pick up the car, at an adjoining desk a couple was picking-up a car at the same time and they left very little Petrol in the Tank which would probably not going to be enough to get them to their Hotel and it was a Sunday so most Stations were closed.
It can be cheaper to hire Locally if you know what you are doing but I think the first time, maybe best to hire you car at same time as you book your Holiday.
Loved Svoronta, quiet a few nice restaurants and a good base for the whole Island. We would probably choose to go there most times,my Brother also went the same years and said the same.
Hope this helps have a great holiday Lyn.

Hi Billiwiz. Try the Mediterranee as per my earlier post. I don't think you will be disappointed. Can't comment on Lixouri cos we only visited for a couple of hours when we hired a car but we thought OK to visit but not to stay for the full holiday. (One man's meat, another man's poison!).

This year my hubby & me are going to Argostoli, Hotel Mirabel on the maine square in the period 21.08.-04.09. So, does anybody know what my hotel look likes? Also, does anybody else going at the same time on Kephalonia?
Regards,
Dudi
I have decided on Kefalonia.
Could anyone advise me on which part would be the best for 30 somethings and a 14 year old boy?
Hope you have a lovely holiday. If you`re looking for a nice beach, Mounda beach, just outside Skala, is beautiful, but very quiet, but there are quite a few restaurants and bars in Skala itself, which is about 5 minutes by car. The beach in Skala is ok, but a tiny bit gritty. For eating out we enjoyed PINES, also PINES 2, which is down on the beach.
I agree Skala is lovely as is Pines restaurant, although I didn't like Pines 2. I would think with a 14 year old you would be better off going to Lassi as its slightly busier.
Thank you for your help.
We've been to Skala several times and absoutely love it, but I would agree with Sarah that Lassi is probably better for a fourteen year old. I would say that Skala is probably more suited to couples, but I think a teenager that is at that awkward inbetweeny age (before the full on pursuit of the opposite gender starts ) would find it boring.
I stayed in Lassi about 10 years ago so I don't know if it has changed much, but when we went the resort was fairly quiet. It was geared up for families and couples with young children as EVERYONE except us had a pushchair or 2!!
We were usually the last people in the restaurant as everyone went out about 6.30 and came back at 9pm. We were still in the pool at 7 and did not go out until about 9pm and found wew were not very welcome in the restaurants as they were more or less closing.
We eventually discovered Argostoli the capital which was a taxi ride away which was much livlier and all the bars and restaurants were based around the town square where you could people watch to your hearts content.
If it has changed then don't let it put you off, other people may say different. Kefalonia was wonderful and still in my top 3 Greek Islands.
I went to Kefalonia with my partner last summer. We're both in our 20s and found Lassi to be a perfect base. The beaches are fantastic, Argostoli is within walking (recommend the coastal route) distance or you can jump in a cab, and there are many trips to go on as well. We would eat out fairly late and there are a few bars too. I'm sure you'll enjoy!
