HI Katiesmum,
It is a risk you have to be prepared to take. We holidayed in the Dom Rep a few years ago and in Riviera Maya Mexico this year. Both times during August. We knew about the risks and were lucky. Whilst in the Dom Rep we did catch the very tail end of Hurricane Charlie, when we had very strong winds and heavy rain for a couple of hours only. Also we'd just arrived home from Mexico 6 days before Hurricane Dean hit. As I say it depends on how you weigh up the situation. In my opinion the odds of you being caught up in weather so bad that it would actualy cause injury or worse to you are quite low and the worse that could happen was that your holiday would not go to plan for a couple of days. I'd definitely not let the possibility of a hurricane put me off visiting Mexico especially if you're limited to August as we were.

Did you like Rivera Maya and where did you stay?

We really enjoyed our holiday. We stayed at the Riu Tequila which was fab. We chose the Riu complex as its our favourite chain of hotels and we had the use of all the facilities of another 3 hotels, which was great if we wanted a change. We also did a couple of trips that were reasonably priced with the tour operator. Playa del Carmen is also worth a walk around both day and evening. Where are you staying Katiesmum?

Hiya. We went to Cancun at the end of August for 2 weeks, and iin all that time we had 1.5 days of drizzle, but still very hot. There were 2 hurricanes on the sidelines but they didn't go near the Cancun Hotel Zone at all. You should be ok going in August. Just keep an eye on weather news/satelite just to make sure that nothing like a hurricane is approaching where you'l be wanting to go. Good luck, hope you enjoy yur holiday when you do go.

I so glad for the positive replies as we have booked to go next August to the Pariso Lindo. We normally go to the Greek Island so this will be a complete change. We discussed the risks but thought we would take a chance as they have a hurricane season each year and are prepared well apparently. Hopefully we will not get caught in a really bad one. :)

We went on the 27th Aug, 5 days after Hurrican Dean did its worst across Belize/ Tulum areas. The Hotel Zone itself was totally untouched. We were in contstant touch with our tour operator who reassured us that if plans were going to change, they would ring us immediately. We were lucky, our holiday went to plan. Im sure everything will fine for you. We stayed at the Barcelo Tucancun, aftert relocating there from a grotty hotel closer to Downtown!
