It depends on how much you are wanting to use your phone. The easiest way to phone is to purchase a phone card, they aren't that much. If you do go for a Turkish sim card, make sure your phone is unlocked before you travel or it won't work. If it's just for an odd text, it's probably not worth it.

Buy a phone card pal I used my phone for like 20 texts and 20 mins got a bill for around 150 from vodafone I was devastated

I would question your bill!! Texts with Vodafone are 55p and it's £1.68 per minute for calls, subject to your tariff.

Download Skype to the pc or the pc of the people you want to talk to & buy a 3 network phone mne is £10 a month unlimted texts & 75 mins calls in uk .....but you also get skype where you can make free calls to other skype users aslong as you have the skype name they are using that way you can phone computers and other skype mobiles ....I have been usng it for years 
If you do decide to get a Turkish sim card you have to register your phone or it will stop working after a few days and lock up your phone.
Hi Kedi. Can you tell me how you register your phone? i presume you just mean your normal contract phone fron UK whoch will enable a turkish sim to be used in it???

You have to go into a phone shop, Turkcell is the main one. You need you passort and your phone details and they will register it for free, after that you cn use a Turkish sim card. You can register any contract or pay as you go phone as long as it is unlocked.
So would I get it unlocked in UK and then register at turkcell then purchase turkish sim? Think I've got it...!!!

Yes, get it unlocked before you go.
I didn't call when abroad but my 02 iphone billed me near £15 in text messages. It was 40p per text message and 20p per MMS.
