We have been in Goa for some time and are having great difficulty getting money from the ATMs with our Nationwide debit card. I have phoned Nationwide several times and the card is in order and they cannot explain why we have this problem. Is anyone in Goa able to use a nationwide card at the ATMs? Can anyone suggest a route to enable us to draw money out?

I have a Nationwide Debit Card and always use it for obtaining cash in Goa, I also have had problems, most of the machines are different to ours you dont leave the card in the machine, you insert the card and almost straight away remove it, if its read the card ok you then procced with the transaction, the card has to be the right way up and the right way round, its confusing, there have been times when I have tried up to six times before it worked. you could ask the security guard some of them are helpful. :tup

silentman can you please write on the forum the right way to put the card in ..the right way up and so on . :cry because in March we had an awful time with our N/W card it just would not pay us out it took £28 on ph calls and a few days to get it sorted ,,,and the funny thing was we went in to the branch the day before we left for Goa and told them all about what we had read on the internet about how there card was not paying out :rofl :rofl oh the lady said you dont need to tell us your going away ...and when we did get through to the people who helped us they said .....you have to let us know when your going away ........lol lol lol colleen

even if you let them know you are travelling ,and where to ,the card will still be blocked regularly.
ours was blocked six times in eight weeks.
phone the number on the back of the card answer the security questions and they sort it within ten minutes. best not to wait untill you have run out of money before you use the atm.
this is better than having your account cleaned out if the card is lost or stolen. after all nationwide dont know how much is your normal holiday spend

I wish I could tell you for certain the correct way, if my memory is right there is a picture of a card above the slot showing the magnetic strip uppermost and I think to the right, problem is I have put card in as shown but it has not worked, so finished up trying all combinations and getting more frustrated, sorry I cant be more helpful :(

Thanks for all the replies...I'm glad it isn't just me! I have phoned NW and they say all is OK so I go to get cash and still it doesn't work. It is hard to carry enough cash to last us as we are in Goa for a long time and also go travelling in India and also go to Thailand. I have also discovered that to use my NW credit card I have to tell them the day before as they will block the card even though they know I am in India and using it there.

We had trouble last year. It was our last day and we were wanting to pay all our bills and we were panic stricken. Our lovely taxi driver told us not worry we could pay him next year - we had a 3 weeks tab and used him every day! He even offered to lend us money, he knows we come back every year but I don't think I would be so trusting. We eventually got one card to work - fortunately we had a selection. This year we intend to take TC only, can't do with all the panic it spoilt our last day.

Everytime we go to Goa we take English money and cash it every day or every other day. Occasionally we use our bank card to get cash at the bank, but normally we take English money along to the exchange and change it into rupees.
We always stay at the Marinha Dourada and hire a safe for the duration of our stay and keep all our cash and other valuables in it.
However this season we are staying at a private apartment. The apartment has a safe in it, but we are just wondering how safe it would be :think
Because of the change in our circumstances we were going to take travellers cheques instead and cash them as we go along? What would others recommended. Especially people who stay in private let apartments.
