Hi
Got home on Tuesday after a 3 night stay in New York. Flight from LHR with British Airways. Delayed for 5 hours, then got to JFK to be told our luggage wasnt even loaded on the aircraft, and we had to wait 45 mins for the next flight to land with our bags on it. Pathetic service from BA, and my seat back TV wasnt working.
Anyway, stayed in the New Yorker Hotel which was great. Clean, comfy, nothing special, but the room was warm and the hotel is in a great location. We got there 11pm Friday, gutting as we should of landed at 4.30pm. Anyway, walked up to Times Sq, 10 mins away from the hotel.
Wow, never been somewhere so busy, I was sat in TGI Fridays having food at 1am and beer, and the place was still buzzing with everything still open. Crazy place. As for all the car horns and traffic, god, makes Cardiff city centre look like a quiet country lane.
Next day was helicopter ride around Manhattan, brilliant. Great views of the Statue of Liberty and central park. Didnt do the ferry seeing as we had just seen the statue. Bought a ticket for the open top bus trips and this was the best purchase all weekend. It was $37 and covered all downtown, though, as they dont check the tickets, we also did the uptown trip with it too, and used it all weekend!!! Really recommend this trip, the tour guides are excellent and you see so much on the trip.
Got off at Rockerfeller centre, absolute chaos, so so busy. You could only shuffle past people, basically you couldnt fall over if you tried! Used the credit card Top of the Rock booth outside and bought tickets. 5 min queue and we were up at the top. Wow the lifts! Clear blue skies meant great views. Back down to try and get close to the xmas tree and ice skating rink but it was so chaotic I was glad to get out of there.
Hop on bus again, see more districts and more sights, Chinatown, Brooklyn Bridge, UN Building, Chrysler building, Trump towers etc. Then jumped on the uptown tour (should of paid for the trip, but they didnt check tickets and I didnt realise so had it for free!). This was great, two hours, maybe three, up one side of central park, past ghostbusters tower, into Harlem, back around and down the other side of central park, past celebrity homes, Gugenheim, Carnige Hall etc. Traffic into evening was just chaos, and it got cold on the bus so wrap up warm! We had an open top bus. which was better for taking photos.
Spent night in the Tick Tock diner next door to hotel, was ok. Went up Empire State building in the evening, 10 min queues, totally amazing views. Well worth the money, dare I say, I preferred this more than Top of the Rock then back up in Times Square.
Next day back on the bus, and used the hop on hop off a lot more, went down to WTC site, very sad, especially in the church opposite. Did some shopping. On bus, got off near United Nations, walked past Chrylser Building, and then into Grand Central Station - wow, what a stunning place. They had a christmas show on with projected moving images being beamed on the side walls with music, was such a christmassy atmosphere in there. Loved the place.
Back on bus, up to Bloomingdales. Again, total chaos up here. Lots of designer shops. Trouble is, for a tourist, you have bag on your back, thick coat on then walk into these shops, which are packed and more like a sauna, not fun.
The rest of Sunday was spent shopping, Macey's, Bloomingdales, and all the designer shops around there BUT - I didnt find the prices any cheaper than the UK. Infact, they were mostly the same. I did buy some IPods from the amazing Apple store which were £80 compared to the £99 in the UK. What a shop that was, queueing to get in, the queue to get out. Used the subway on the Sunday to get around - wow, the acceleration and speed those trains go is amazing!!! Make sure you hold on!!!
I bought some clothes from a designer warehouse under Tk Maxx, and some aftershaves from a perfume shop on a side street, basically, I found the smaller shops away from the department stores a lot better value for money. Food in the smaller places were also much better. We had breakfast in a bakery sort of place which seemed full of New yorkers, a fresh baked roll containing eggs and bacon, with tea, and my dad had an omlette with potatoes, and freshly baked bagel and coffee, was $11 - about £5.50.
I actually came home with some money. The duty free shops in the airport were good prices so I spend a few quid in there on the aftershaves. Flight back with BA was on time and much better, how it should have been going out.
Overall a great trip, did so much walking I am still aching. Weather was great, no snow, but dry with clear skies. Colder here in the UK. I wouldnt rush to go back, and not for Christmas shopping though. I am glad I have been for the experience, and the the bus trips took us around downtown, midtown and uptown so we saw a lot but I wont go back now for a few years!
I've never had a notion to visit NY and would certainly hate it at this time of year with the crowds.

Thanks for posting your report You certainly managed to cram in lots of sightseeing!
Must admit it's too cold for me to go at this time of year so I think you're very brave, especially with all the Christmas crowds!
We didn't do too much shopping and tended to steer away from the department stores. J Crew was a good one and they had a sale on when we were there so we got loads of bargains.
I am excited by your report and it makes me wish I were there to enjoy the Christmas spirit. Just hoping that maybe? I will catch the tail end of the sales. What is Century 21? Where is it in relation to where I am staying. I am at the Marriot Marquis Hotel in Times Square?
Many thanks and a very happy Christmas to you and your family.
Sue
Helicopter ride was worth the money yes. We flew close to Statue of Liberty and the pilot was brilliant. The company (Liberty) however were not that brilliant, 1 hour delay, and leaving people outside queueing. I would use New York Helicopter Tours next time.
Believe it or not, the weather in the UK is colder than it was in NY. Didnt see any frost in NY. Agree about the crowds, the most we could do in places was shuffle, bit like being in a very busy nightclub, and it wasnt fun at all. The shop window displays though - wow!!
Keela1eva2 : I would say do both! Personally for me, Empire State was better, maybe its because I did it at night? Rockefeller was great in the day because you had a good view of Empire State, and of central park. Empire State was good in the night because it is more central, and all the busy roads below look like bright orange glows of lava and you can even see the Statue of Liberty lit up in the distance. Plus - its the Empire State Building - you cant say you went to NY and didnt go up it. The long long lines of queue area inside shows just how busy it can get, I booked my tickets online at their website - however, at 10pm there were no queues anyway.
Bus trip - the busses stop frequently around NY, and where they stop you will see guys stood on the pavement in Bright yellow or Blue jackets with flyers in their hands, and a ticket machine on their side. They do various packages, we bought the downtown tour for $37 but like I said, they dont check the tickets when you get on, so we did the uptown tour as well without paying any extra. Although very cold, I found the open top busses more enjoyable - you could smell the smells in the different neighbourhoods (Chinatown for example) and also you didnt have dirty glass windows to stop you taking a decent photo - just wear a hat, scarf, thick coat and gloves!!!
Century 21 is down by WTC site, I would get a bus from Times Sq - we used the tour bus to get down there, they are hop on hop off sort of thing, and there is a bus every 20 mins. Its like a big department store with lots of clothing, though I found it a bit of a jumble and not that cheap. The most shops are up near Bloomingdales and around that area, some really good designer ones - but be warned, if you are going there expecting bargains because of the high exchange rate, you will be dissapointed. You are better off looking for smaller shops on the streets which maybe specialise in a certain product - for example, branded clothing, perfumes, electricals rather than using the department stores.
Also, Times Square, be warned, its busy!!! I have never seen a place like it. Everything is constantly open, never closes and its always busy there. Even at 2am. To move on the pavements in the day you have to shuffle. The police even closed some side streets because too many people were having to overspill onto the roads.
I would definately recommend going to see Grand Central station as well.
Oh and dont buy anything off those street hot dog vendors. The coach tour guides warned us of this, particularly their hygene standards!! Thought the stuff they sell is very interesting, particuarly those big pretzel things!
But yeah, hop on the bus trips and hop on/off frequently and you will be amazed at just how much you get to see. Happy Christmas to you too!!
Just to add my thanks for a great review. I will be in NYC this time next year as my friend's getting married at the Waldorf-Astoria on 20/12/2008, and I'm planning on making a week's holiday of it - it's good to know what to expect in terms of crowds etc! (never been to the States before, very excited already )
I will follow your advice and go to the Empire State building. Did you save any time buying your ticket prior to travelling.
I don't need to see the statue of Liberty as I have sailed in and out of NY several times and will do also on this cruise.
I am worried about how busy it is at Times Square. Do you think Christmas was making it worse? Also were you there on a weekend. I am going Tuesday and leave on the cruise on Friday. I am just hoping!
Once again many thanks.
Sue
I also had to go and see Grand Central again, just to take photos for my stepdad, he used to work there as a busboy in the 50's. Did you see Macy's fantastic Christmas window? awesome.
We stayed around the corner from Century 21 and we did most of our serious shopping in there. They get new stuff in every day, so be prepared to have a good old rummage around and you will find the bargains. Hubby is a size 14 shoe and really struggles here, he got three pairs of awesome Timberland shoes for £85 the lot. Sean John T shirt for £10, we got BabyPhat and G Unit stuff for our girls and didn't pay any more than £20 an item, even for the most gorgeous jacket for my 15 yr old. The Century 21 shoe department is around the corner from the main entrance on Cortland street. Whilst we were there Footlocker were doing a sale on K-Swiss sneakers, 2 pairs for $89.99, works out around £22.50 a pair for adults, that's some going.
As you can imageine we took some ungluing from that store. We did however get a 3ft high Dora the Explorer doll at Toys r us in Times Square, hubby was a minor celeb bringing that back down the subway to Tribeca, everyone on the train wanted to get a look at it.
Stayed in Times Square area before and have to admit I prefer not to stay in the thick of it. I like to stay in a different area each time if I can. It's the East Village next time. At busy times of year I like to be able to walk down the street and not shuffle.. so downtown suited us much better.
We did the Staten Island ferry at dusk the day after the first snowfalls of the season, it was -5 without the windchill, but still so worth it coming back to the city when it was fully dark and all the lights twinkling. Can't wait to go back in June, and brave the inevitable heatwave this time.
great report I'd love to go but will pick a time that is less crowded and cold. I have done an open topped bus tour of Barcelona in March and it took me hours to defrost so I cant imagine how cold you were
I also went this easter just gone and flew with BA my tv wasnt working as well and i told the stewdess who just shrugged her shoulders and said "its not my fault".
Also - all the transmitters up there interferred with my dads camcorder, his recording came out all fuzzy and with a buzzing noise. My newer camcorder was fine, but now and then you can hear the buzzing noise on the tape. Obviously some very high power FM and TV antennas up there!!
I would think to be honest Times Sq is always busy due to, well, what it is. However yeah, Christmas crowds would contribute no doubt. I was there on a weekend yes, so it may be a little bit quieter in the week, perhaps....
Choirgirl - went past the Waldorf on the bus trip, looked really nice, and is very close to Rockefeller centre. Yeah crowds up there were chaotic, so just be warned lol!
Joolz6768 - yeah I did see Macey's window, got it all on video, the scenes depicted in each window were stunning, must have taken them ages to do. I think for me Century 21 was a bit of a jumble, and being hot from walking, I just wanted to get out, not rummage through loads of racks on mixed up clothes. I also found it difficult getting S, or M sizes over there, most clothes were L, XL or XXL, perhaps because of the American body sizes!!
Jangokev - I have written to BA to complain, about the delay, tv not working and baggage not being on the flight. Will let you know how I get on, last time I complained due to a tv not working on the flight I got £30 off vouchers for the next flight I took.
I have to say, I am finding it a lot colder here in the UK than it was in NY!!!!
