According to this mornings edition of the Spanish National newspaper "El Pais", Spain is to introduce random drug and alcohol testing of all pilots and flight crews of National airlines"¦making Spain the first country in Europe to enforce such stringent tests.
The pilots union SEPLA has admitted that they have been "caught off guard" and argue that negotiations need to take place and that the strict testing should also include ground crew, especially technicians
Breathalylizer tests and cotton swab samples to test for illicit drugs, places Spain on par with the USA in the way it monitors pilots to improve flight safety.
In other European countries, tests can only be carried out if reasonable suspicion exists.
