'Balconing', the most dangerous game of tourists to the Balearic Islands
# In less than 12 hours three boys of 18 and 20 years have fallen from the balcony.
# A young man is in critical condition and another is seriously injured
# They try to jump from balcony to balcony or dip in the pool from the terrace
# The hotel ensures that the facilities meet all safety standards
These young people in their twenties, mostly foreigners, and with a heavy concentration of alcohol in blood. The phenomenon of 'precipitates' is repeated year after year in the Balearics with fatal consequences. So far this summer on the islands are already at least 30 young people who have 'fallen' from balconies of tourist accommodation, four of them have died and doctors are now struggling with a young man who fell Sunday in Ibiza to not increase this tragic statistic.
Tourist apartments and hotels, especially in the areas of Magaluf, Palmanova, El Arenal, Alcudia and Plaja d'en Bossa in Ibiza are the most affected by the new sport reckless German and British tourists, especially (though not spared the Spanish, especially youth trips) have come to call the 'balconing'.
Basically it means passing from one apartment to another or jumping from room to room through the balcony. There are also those who seek to use the terrace as a springboard to the pool without calculating the risk that the euphoria and lack of reflexes caused by alcohol and drugs consumed during a night out involved.
The result is often a young man rushed into the street or in the courtyard of the hotel with multiple injuries can range from a broken leg or arm to literally open the head, as has been the case that occurred on Sunday afternoon in Ibiza. A boy of 20 years jumped from a third floor in the apartments bossam in Plaja d'en Bossa. UVI was transferred in critical state to Can Misses and from there to Son Dureta helicopter where he is admitted to intensive care with severe head trauma.
However, this was the first of three incidents in less than twelve hours. In Magaluf two 18 year olds fell or jumped out at dawn from two separate balconies. One at 02.50 hours at the Hotel Barracuda Magaluf in Majorca from a first floor. Both have suffered multiple injuries and were taken to hospital UVI Dureta in serious condition.
A couple of hours later, around 0515 hours a third boy of 18 jumped from the balcony of a second floor apartment Sotavento Magaluf. As luck would have the young man fell into the first floor terrace and his injuries are less severe but also had to spend the night in hospital.
From the SEIB 112 indicate that, although not many of these incidents may have to do with the intake of alcohol or drugs, but knows that often tends to be a coincidence in cases involving tourists during the summer months. "Jump into the pool from the room or across a balcony to balcony are usually some of the causes. Do not forget that many are due to accidents, some autolysis and have even recently had a case arising from a sleepwalker" indicated sources from the Emergency service.
'The policy of' anything goes 'is not working'
For his part, from hotel associations in the affected areas say that the problem, at least on the legal level is solved, "tour operators are very strict on this point and all hotels have adapted security measures such as handrails on the balconies, which is the current legislation. "
Also noted that in recent years "is conducting an anti-hooliganism in collaboration with the tourist information office in London and certain behaviors are not allowed. In fact, we applaud the English for doing so " And is that for areas such as hotel establishments are not interested in Magaluf this type of advertising we are trying to clear our names and we are getting, the policy of 'anything goes' no longer works, "said the spokesman of the Association of Hotel Owners Magaluf and Palma Nova, Joan Espinosa.
For his part, Councillor for Tourism and Labor, Joana Barceló, has specified that each case must be pursued "specific and concrete", so that should not be "generalized" to a possible explanation for the cause of these falls. In any case, the Regional Minister stressed that the message you want to convey to the archipelago is that the Balearic Islands is "a safe destination."
