Yes, and they're considerably more reliable for underwater use!

What a ridiculous question! As if anyone would do something so silly!

Well now! I had a bright idea!

My Mum doesn't like snorkelling or even to just wear a mask and I wanted her to see what was just below the water. Although you get a good view of what's in the shallow water from the surface the same can't be said for the deep water at the end of the jetty.

I wanted immediate results and was too impatient to wait until I had my camera on the beach with me so I put my mask in the water, just on the surface (I wasn't wearing it...can you see where this is going?!), placed my mobile phone inside the mask with the video recording and lay down on the jetty to see what I was filming.

All looked great, had a clear view to the bottom! I'd now be able to show Mum what she couldn't see from the surface!

Then a wave sloshed over the mask and killed my phone! Never to be resurrected! I had to buy a new phone when I got home. This method of underwater photography is NOT to be recommended!

Pippy :D

I have the best camera for under water vids/pic's it's a digital cam but can also go under water at the same time, the quality of the videos is amazing for such a small thing like that.

Would highly recommed you getting one of these espically for in the sea, went to egypt in june and used it then, amazing pic's and videos.

But I didn't have it with me! It was up in my room and I was on the jetty having just watched the sun rising and been for a quick snorkel and I wanted to do it NOW! Hence the mobile phone idea! :?

pentax optio w30 best camera i have ever had.
Reply
thanks for the heads up on that ,got me thinking also been looking at the olympus mju 725 ,did you have any problems with the pentax at all ,i'm always suspicious of mixing salt water and electronics .as usual it seems technology is advancing faster than we can cope with .how did the screen and lens hold up any scratches etc ,no long term ill affects ,i presume you have to wash in fresh water after sea use ,have you uploaded any pics yet so i/we can see the results

Has anyone used the Vivitar V5188 as it seems a bargain for £50 but is it better than disposables?

Thanks
Reply
that pentax w30 seems a better buy ,if you look round there sub £150 and if theres no problems with salt water corrosion a better option than buying a housing ,the olympus according to reports has a problem with the autofocus

no problem whats so ever with water or salt water, great pictures/videos.

Such a good camera

What does anyone think about the new Vivitar Waterpoof digital camera. Its 6mpixel and is suitable for 30ft under water. Its around £80 on Amazon. Has anyone got one??

Ive got the Vivitar 6200W,...

Basically its design is a rip off of the sealife minireef range

I took it to Tunisia and whilst its operation is good I didnt like the quality of the pictures they came out very greeny maybe cos the sea was a bit murky or cos it was me?

then again there was nothing in the sea to take pictures of except the jellyfish

Im taking it to E in October to see if i can get some better pictures.
its fine for purely walking into the sea with without any worries.

The olympus mju series give excellent pics underwater. The olympus mju700sw is apparently the one to get. It is waterproof to 10 metres without the housing so if there is a leak in the housing then you have a chance to salvage the camera.
Try http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk
We had a Nikon this year, the housing leaked and ruined the camera so it will be the olympus for next year.
