To David H T Mod,

Thank you for the information and link to newspaper story, Globespan are still selling flights to Manchester up tp Nov 19th.
I have been watching Globespan's flights to YHM and at the beginning of this week there Glasgow/Manchester flight was 12 - 14 hours late in leaving, today they are still trying to catch up. I have flown from YHM twice and had great flights and there time schedules have been picking up until now. I did read that there was a problem on a flight from YHM on August 28th but I can't get any confirmation of the problem, did you hear of any. As you can see by my name I live almost in YHM's backyard and have been hoping that Globespan would bring some life to our little but friendly airport.
I know there is a problem with Globespan's head office, I sent Mr Dalrymple a letter complimenting the excellent flight and cabin staff on my flights. That was almost 3 months ago, I thought that with all the complaints they had to be getting I felt a complimentary letter would get some acknowledgement from Globespan, nothing so far.
Anyway thanks for the lead on Manchester, I reckon I will be making other plans.

I flew with Globespan from Glasgow to Barcelona 2 weeks ago - which was 1 hour 30 mins delayed in leaving. Was told due to a flight coming to Glasgow was late due to headwinds. Cabin crew were good and helpful. On the return flight yesterday - Saturday. Flight was ready to leave on time, everybody on board. Then got told that not enough fuel was put on. Which took extra 15 mins. After that, the Captain announced that Barcelona Air Traffic Control had delayed us for an extra 30 mins due to air traffic restrictions. At least we got told for the delay. Member of cabin crew at front of plane was cheery & happy. and even let me read her magazines while on the flight.

Just returned from another Glasgow - Malaga trip and cannot complain about anything on the outbound and inbound flights whatsoever. I am a frequent traveller with Globespan, since their early days departing only from Prestwick, and I have always been lucky with the flights, little or no delays, pleasant crew etc.

Just returned from our holiday to Florida and i am so relieved to be writing a POSITIVE REVIEW!!!!!!!!

Just to recap - we were originally booked to fly out from Glasgow to Orlando Sanford on Thursday 13th September (Premium Economy) but Flyglobespan changed our flight (And didnt tell us! We found out by accident whilst randomly checking the flights one day!) to Wednesday 12th September - obviously we were very upset about this as we had booked our hire car and hotel around our flights and these now had to be changed. Anyway, to cut a long story short, Flyglobespan gave us two options - to either go with the change or cancel the flights altogether and get a full refund. We went with the change and as a small compensation Flyglobespan upgraded us to Business Class for the outgoing flight.

Well, after reading many bad reviews online i was getting myself so worked up about it and i was beginning to dread the flights.

We turned up to Glasgow airport and were pleasantly surprised to see seperate check in desks for Economy, Premium Economy and Business Class. We had no queue and got checked in straight away - "1st Class" stickers were put on our cases and we were given our Business Class Lounge tickets. The lounge was lovely - nice and quiet and help-your-self unlimited drinks (Both alcohol and non-alcohol).

We boarded the plane and i was so shocked - it was BRILLIANT! I had made sure i didnt have my hopes up, but this was amazing. There was a small square table between the two seats and there was 2 bottles of water waiting for us. Also a blanket and pillow sitting wrapped in the seat for us. The seats were lovely - it reclined but also brought up a leg rest - almost like a bed! LOADS of leg room. The table came out of your arm rest.

I also didnt have my hopes up about getting the pre-booked meals (Had heard people not getting what they ordered etc) but the air hostess was lovely and she confirmed that i was booked for pasta instead of the normal Steak that everyone else was having. We had a table cloth put over our tables for both meals, were served like being in a restaurant (No food trolley for us) - the hostess brought out the meals individually to each person. We had proper china plates and proper wine glasses etc. Also proper real cutlery!

We were given individual entertainment systems which contained some tv episodes (Like Simpsons, My Family etc) and music videos. Also on the main tv screens they also showed two films. Only Business Class were given the individual entertainment systems.

We were offered drinks many times throughout the flight. The air hostesses were Italian (NEOS aircraft) but they were all nice and friendly and spoke good English.

To our surprise, our bags were also the FIRST OFF when we arrived in Sanford - we were so shocked - 1st Class really does mean 1st Class!!!!

What a brillaint start to an amazing holiday!

On the return flight we were Premium Economy - back to plastic cutlery etc! No individual entertainment (We brought our own anyway) and the aircraft looked a bit shabby (Bits of the carpet was curling up - the cover for the seat infront of me was peeling off and looked disgusting etc). No blankets or pillows provided even though it was a night flight.

I got my meal i booked on the way back aswell (Risotto instead of the Beef Curry) so that was good and also a pleasant surprise. We didnt get the seats we booked for the way back though but we didnt really care.

The return flight was practically empty - row upon row of empty seats in both Premium and normal Economy (Didnt get a look at Business on the flight back).

All in all, i think i would definitely fly with Flyglobespan again. I dont think i'd pay for Business Class (It is very expensive in my opinion), but it was definitely a lovely surprise and very very different to Premium Economy. Its something i'll remember for a long time and made such a difference to the start of the holiday. I even enjoyed the meals both going and on return flight!!

Both flights left ontime, no delays.

Announced 1st Oct

FlyGlobespan to fly to Corfu from May 2008 They will add weekly flights from Edinburgh and Glasgow, starting on 24 May.

Flyglobespan have lost their ETOPS capability - meaning all their transatlantic flights will re-quire a technical stop (refueling) en-route. While there are some "unspecified rumours" regarding their financial situation - the company have it is understood taken to close allUK bases apart from Glasgow and Edinburgh. With hindsigt the company may well have been better on concentrating on these bases rather than trying to spread their wings so quickly. This does not mean that they will stop operating from other UK airports - just that the bases will be in the two Scottish cities.

Does that mean all the Glasgow to Orlando flights will now need a refuel stop in future? When does it start? We wouldve been happy to fly with them again, but with a stop involved it kinda changes our mind.

Its not yet confirmed Glittergirl - most likely immediate effect - but yes Orlandoflights will require a technical stop - perhaps Gander/NewFoundland. Advantage is - if GSM get it sorted, passengers could clear USA immigration procedures there - making a quick exit at Orlando which might be not such a bad thing!

Nivsy,
Please excuse my confusion, but how is it that passengers could clear USA Immigration procedures in Gander when it is in Canada? have they some special dispensation from the US of A as that is most unlike them!

Cheers,

Basically yes. Immigration control can take place in Canada with USA officials. Indeed, this was also carried out in Shannon Ireland.

Nivsy,

Do you know if the loss ot ETOPS is confined to certain aircraft types in the GSM fleet or the whole fleet? If its just he 767/757's, then I can't understand how they are going to get to Gander without having ETOPS certified aircraft. I don't know the ins and outs of ETOPS (Extended Twin Engine Operations), but it requires a diversion airport within the specified ETOPS certification (eg 180). The loss of ETOPS, presumably due to ETOPS maintenance makes Gander difficult unless they route way north to overpass Iceland to be as close to diversion airports as possible. Presumably the reason a tech stop will be required for Orlando?

Passengers won't be allowed off the aircraft during technical stops so there won't be any immigration to clear. Immigration will take place at the destination airport. ie if you are flying to Orlando and tech stop in Gander, immigration will occur in Orlando not Gander.

EDIT: Thinking about it, this might not be as much a problem as first thought as GSM are using Neos 767's and Icelandair 757's so these are presumable exempt from the restrictions as they aren't GSM aircraft.

Can anybody tell me if the ETOPS can be reinstated relatively quickly if the airline perhaps take steps to remedy the measures that caused concern, I am flying to Sanford from Glasgow with Globespan in September 08 and I am naturally concerned now.

From my limited understanding of ETOPS, its a long drawn out process to gain the status. It's not only the aircraft capabilities, its centred around maintenance (higher standards than normal), crew training etc so it's not something that can be gained overnight. Again, my understanding of the problem is it shouldn't effect the Neos aircraft being used on the long haul flights since these aren't GSM's, they are leased.

Thanks Darren, I had phoned Globespans customer service dept a few weeks ago about seating plans, and at this time they told me that they were planning to use their own aircraft on this route as well as the leased Neos, if maintenance is a factor will it not be Globespans responsibility to mainain the Neos aircraft anyway, ie will it not be the company as opposed to the aircraft that loses its ETOPS privilages.

flem,

As far as I'm aware, the aircraft are 'wet leased' which means Neos provide everything, the operate the flights on behalf of GSM.

It is understood that losing the e-tops approval only effects the GLA-NOC-BOS and the LPL-NOC-JFK which end on competion of this month as other flights are flown on Icelandair 757's and Neos 767's. raft of "issues" can result in ETOPS being suspended and I guess while it can be a bit of a nause for passengers you really must up the advantages or otherwise of having to have a stop enroute of routing via the likes of LHR, LGW,CDG AMS etc etc with other carriers.

Still not convinced that US immigration cannot be cleared in Canada. Am sure this has phappened before and most certainly has happened in Ireland.

Yes, it does mean a more Northerly route allowing for land to be within 90 mins of reaching (if memory serves me correctly)
