It very much depends on what you want from a holiday as to whether or not you enjoy San Miguel. The hotel rooms are very basic but if all you use the room for is to sleep, shower and change then they are adequate. The rooms are kept very clean and there are lovely views from the Hotel balconies (not so much at the Club depending on which room you get). The food is o.k. but not great - always plenty of choice but quite repetitive - twice a week they do either a fish or meat speciality night which are usually good.
The sun bed reservation at dawn is beyond a joke though - wish they would start locking the beds away until a reasonable time as we hate having to get up way before 7 a.m otherwise there are no sunbeds left (and it is the british who are mostly responsible)!! An alternative is to use the beach if you aren't participating in the daytime activities.
Included in the AI is use of canoes/boats and sailboards but you have to pay for pedaloes & banana boat.
The reason why so many people return, including us, is the animation team. They make everyone welcome and provide lots of activities throughout the day that you can join in if you want to - but will leave you to lie in the sun if that is all you want to do. They also provide most of the entertainment during the evening although there are some outside acts brought in. We have been for the last 6 years and are returning next year and even though we have seen the same entertainment each year, we still have a great laugh.
Not much else in the resort, but there are a few bars/restaurants and shops and some nice walks around the bay if it isn't too hot. The hotel is right on the beach - no roads to cross and very safe for children.
If you don't mind a relatively quiet resort then go for it - most people love it!! There are still loads of families who return year after year and they perhaps don't bother writing good reviews which would outweigh the poor ones. As far as I am concerned, the resort has not deteriorated in the time that I have been going there and the earlier reviews on this site are all very positive.
i agree with Dylan, if you like the look of Hotel go for it, we did, it's the first Hotel we're returnig to for second year, mainly due to Animation and also pressure from hubby and 2 teenagers, they all enjoyed it, something for everyone. have been to better and worse hotels but San Miguel's addictive.
We always found something good to eat at the buffet and didn't find it too repetitive over the fortnight, which I must admit surprised me.
As a more general point about negative reviews, some folk just aren't happy unless they're complaining. I was in the queue for the cocktail bar at the hotel beside someone who had been there for 10days (staying in the hotel, not waiting in the queue!) and someone who had just arrived off the bus from the airport.
The person who had been there could not wait to tell the new arrival how dreadful the place was, in her opinion. I was outraged and asked the woman to at least give the person the chance to make up their own mind, and told the new arrival we were having a great time. I think it boiled down to the fact that the woman found out that some people had paid much less than her for the same holiday and she felt ripped off rather than an objective view of the hotel and what it offered.
It's not a luxury hotel, the rooms are basic, but if you get a good deal, and consider what's included in the AI package (ie some watersports, being able to eat at other restaurants in the complex, use of all three hotels' facilties, snack bar, free popcorn, ice cream and lollies for the kids plus great entertainment) it's great value for money.
We're certainly hoping to go back same time next year.
Hi all, Can anyone tell me if its possible to take a laptop to the S/M Beach Club & get online?.. I dont really know alot about computers so any advise would be gratefully received...I hope everyone has had a great Christmas & I wish you all the very best for 2008...
There are no internet connection points for a laptop at the hotel and no wireless internet available either (I know, because my son would have found it on his PSP). I wouldn't bother taking a laptop. There are computers in various places around the San Miguel hotel/beach club complex but they are expensive to use. It's cheaper to go across the road to the excursions agent "Ibiza Covered", my son told me they were brand new computers with Windows Vista.
we're booked to return to SM hotel in June having missed going in 2007. Just noticed on the Thomson website that the all inclusive finishes at 11pm. Did this happen last year or is it new?
I know the galeon is 11.00pm, but sm has always been midnight.
thought it was! not so bothered about the alcohol, but we enjoyed going up to the restaurant for late night snacks after the entertainment finished. I hope its a printing error!!
We have friends going at the beginning of May, so I'll feedback then if no one else knows.
I am e.mailing the hotel about a possible booking for my daughter and her boyfriend so will ask if all inclusive finishes at 11 or midnight and will post their reply.
Thanks Dylan
The hotel has confirmed that all inclusive does finish at 11 p.m. this year!!
- that's a shame
Sorry Dylan, thanks for asking. I didn't realise that anyone was there at the hotel yet, as I need to email some requests myself, was going to wait but may as well get it done.

I don't think Zorro & Co will be too happy about that - I'm sure they won't want everyone wandering off for "last orders" while they're trying to do their show
Wonder what the reason is.
Going to the San Miguel hotel for the first time on 5th May, has anyone been there before at this time of year? if so what is it like e.g. weather/entertainment. Any helpful tips please. Just me and hubby going.
Hello den51cat, My family & I have been there several times at the begining of May, the weather is normally pretty good you may get a couple of rainy days but its still warm between 20 & 25...The entertainment is good and is practically the same throughout the season...As its the start of the season its not really packed, the one downside is some of the rooms smell abit musty because they have not been used...We are actually going to the Beach Club on the 3rd May for 2 weeks...If there is anything else you wish to know I will do my best to answer it...
Following on from the earlier post.I have confirmation that the bar does indeed close at 11pm this year.
i went last year and there was a bit of a hoo ha over adults getting drunk and misbehaving in the beach club pool making lots of noise etc ,i don't know if anyone complained i didn't as i was snoring away but i know it is a family resort so maybe that is why they will close at 11 ? it is a shame as i enjoyed the snacks and the drinks while my husband and i played cards while kids were a sleep ,i am going this year in june and still can't wait yippee ...
I'm going on the 20th June.
