We have just got back from 3 weeks in Calungute.
This was by far the most disgusting place we have ever been and are still in shock by the utter filth and devastation of Goa. We tried most restaurants recommended by HT users. Suza Lobo being the worst and most overated. Walking past the waste disposal at the doors put me of my food the most. J&A's was the best place we went to, simply a class above everywhere else including Nivarna and East Meets West which was badly set out, as was Inferno. Being woken by the the spitting by hotel staff was probably one of the worst aspects, and everyone else on the beach all day at the end of your beds, and everywhere else was disgusting and made us feel sick. The riot on the beach on New Years eve daytime was pretty scary as was the night time on the beach. The amount of english people who kept seriously recommending the best place to go for steak and kidney pie or a Jacket potato was funny for a while. Captains Cabin in Calungute looked after us the best compared to Pete's shack, disgusting! Candolim in general the shacks should be demolished as a health risk, the "toilets" will cause a death if not sorted soon. Not being able to swim for fear of death or see in the water was a big disappointment even at other beaches. Vagator being by far the worst, waliking past the rubbish dump on the way was harrowing, we lasted an hour.
I could go on about the roads, transport, the bored of it know it all English, travel reps... useless, hotel standards etc but I just wish everyone who goes there the best of luck with your health, as we will never go again, thank god!
You didn't like it then?
You have just listed many of the things that are true about Calangute and Goa. I take it this was your first time if so usually you love it or hate it you are obviously the latter. I've visited Calangute 6 times over the last 8 years and love the place. Just got back a week ago and also had a meal in Suza Lobo's which was excellent. Admittedly the area around Suza Lobo's is where most of the Indian tourists tend to gather and they drop litter everywhere and it is a real mess.
It's a pity you did not get to other beaches such as Morjim, Mandrem and Palolem as I'm sure your opinion would be different.
I'm not sure what your expectations where of Goa but I would be interested to hear where you have been before and are using as a comparison as that may explain a lot.
Many love Goa but I accept it is not for everyone, hope you find somewhere more to your liking.
Well ! Well ! I cant beleive its that bad, for when we last went 3 years ago we loved it and you cant put us off from going again this SAT. In fact I think you are brave to write a post like that and I am sure you will get a real load of angry replies from ALL THE GOAN LOVERS on H.T.s I wish you all the best.
we met a couple last year who felt like that, they booked because it was hot and hated every minute of it which shows you need to do your research before you book. they were well travelled but mostly 5 star resorts. It was our first time too and we loved every minute of it, mainly thanks to this forum telling us everything we needed to know and more.
I think even most of the Goa die hards will agree on some of your points, don`t think anyone will think any less of you for slagging the place but as Datsun asked, did you have plus points ? just interesting to hear other peoples views on what Goa was like for a newcomer
We have been to Olu Deniz, Paradise! Egypt - Awesome for swimming sorkeling, great food, amazing trips, the best hotels etc! Greece - beautiful beaches, restaurants etc, Germany, Italy, America and lots more and Goa can simply not compete on any level, other than the food. It doesnt tick any boxes for a great holiday. It felt like a bomb had been dropped and eveyone has just carried on because the sun is still shining. We did have a good time at Brito's, J&A's Cola beach Xmas eve was lovely and the people we met made it, but we wont be recommending it to anyone we like, or ever go back to the hell that is Goa!
Pete's Shack???? I'm confused - the people are lovely and the food is some of the best that I have had - sorry that you didn't like
It's a good job we don't all like the same things. I would never "recommend" anyone to go on holiday anywhere, what I like someone else might hate. I will only ever tell them whether I liked it or not. Personally, I love Goa, but there are places that I have been to that I would never go back to, while others rave over them.
Each to their own I guess, personally I love it because it's not in the least bit like America
I do hope Denny3 is not castigated for his/her views. We met someone at the CSM in November who felt exactly the same and in spite of some of my "negative" views about whats happening there, I did my level best to defend Goa. It wasn't worth the effort as all I got was grief and rudeness in return. True, we can't all like the same things in life but even those of us who go there regularly have to admit (if not agree) that things really do need to improve if they want us to keep going. Sorry that you didn't enjoy Goa Denny3 and I do hope you find somewhere else that inspires you in the way that Goa once did when we all first went there.
By the Wednesday she loved it.
Guess what????????????
They started going for 3 weeks a year,then 4.
now they spend 6 month there,in a rented house a spit away from candolim beach.........
I must say that personally i hate Calangute, much prefer quieter south now,but thats my liking.each to their own.
Like I say we did have an experience we will never forget, the elephants, tuk tuks, wild pigs and cows on the beach. We have some of the most interesting photo's weve ever had. It was life changing to see the poverty and life conditions in Margoa. I did a lot of research and followed all tips from the kind and honest people on HT for the last six months at least, we just felt after the rave reviews and the fact that people love it so much we must have gone to the wrong place.
The rubbish issues are a big thing and desperately needs sorting, where abouts was all the rubbish at Vagator ? this is my favourite place and when I visit in 8 weeks time will be my first port of call. One thing that has spoiled Vagator over the last 9 years are those beach hut things on the cliffs, maybe the filth is catching up on this once great little gem of a place, very sad
I hope it is cleaned up for your trip feelthevibe. It's when you turn left on the cliff all the way down, past the syringes and other waste, I'm not joking and wish I was. The huts were there, but I know they need to make a living. The shacks were hassely and the indian girl wished me "good luck" on the way to the toilet which worried me a lot. I must say also that I'm not posh or used to living it up, I am a working class lad from the Wirral, who was really looking to Goa.
Its interesting to read that you followed all the tips and advise from other HTers for the past 6 months, by reading all the postings etc etc. However, never in that time did you think to register as a member of HT and come on here and ask any questions for yourself or get excited and look forward to your holiday in the forum (which most people do) but youve now found it appropriate to join HT and add in mostly negative comments.
I think holiday forums are fantastic and offer a wealth of information, and for someone who has done a little bit of travelling, Turkey, Egypt, America, Greece, Italy, Germany etc I thought you might have joined HT long before this, its handy for seeking information about every destination in the world.
If it was near the car park between the 2 beaches is, it was a mess last year too I honestly despair with the authorities lack of action on such issues, as a you being a first time visitor to Goa should be already thinking of booking again for next year, or definately not as is now the case, maybe us old hands just choose to remember the good old days and try to ignore what really is becoming a major problem in Goa ? there will come a time though when enough is enough even for the most hardy of Goa fanatics.
I took my wife out to Goa for her first time and when we left Diabolic airport on the way to Calangute, at the first roundabout i said to her ''well what do you think?' she replied ....where in the hell have you brought me too
after 1 day and once the dust had settled she loved every minute.
they do however need to clean up their act
I think the first few days in Goa is a "culture shock" for everyone
I'm afraid tha Goa is not going to be everyones cup of tea, the two couples we are closest too are a case in point, I'd have no hesitation bringing one of them to Goa, but close friends as they are, I know that the other couple would absolutley hate it, and have told them it's not their cup of tea.
