I've had our tickets back for our hols starting the 15th march 08 and its just got my husbands first name and surname on the tickets..Will this be ok..or should it have 1st + 2nd, and surname on like his passport....

Ticket often have only the first initial and surname, no full name, so they will be fine.

Not correct. A child's passport is valid until it expires. If a 5 year one was issued to a 15 year old, it would still be valid when that person travels aged 19.

Can't believe it, the passport office have sent me a letter asking me to send new photos of my 8 yr old son because his head appears to be "tilted" on the one side?? How crazy is that? It is a perfectly good photo in every other way but he is slightly tipping his head to the right??? So annoying as I have to get it countersigned again as well. This seems just so ridiculous ,if you could actually see the photo you wouldn't even have noticed. Thing is when it was taken I made sure he was sat in the middle, not too high etc etc.....So just be warned, make sure you sit bang in the middle and don't move your head even slightly off centre! How do people with babies or the disabled manage? I really do think this was OTT Anyone else had probs like this?

they have their rules and when you GEt your application you should have had a diagram and list of what is and what isn't acceptable...

last year we renewed the OH's the picture looked great but was rejected because of the way she wares her glasses [slightly down] which meant the top of he frames were level with th bottom of the eye socket.... the replacement pictures were nor half as good but accepted :que

We used the booths for our photos. Hubby hadn't positioned himself as per the instructions and instead of adjusting the screen so his face fitted the frame, he leaned forward instead to make it fit.

The photos were rejected as there was too much reflection and there wasn't enough contrast in his skintone. I think they were right to reject them even though they looked OK.

hello

im getting married in August, obviously hoping to be going abroad for our honeymoon.

However i understand that i have to change my passport, to my new surname- but im i correct in thinking i have to pay the full price for doing so. As i still have lots of years on my current passport, which they wont carry over. hardly seems fair

There's nothing to say you have to change the name in your passport. The important thing is to book the holiday in the same name as that on the passport. The ticket and passport names must match at check-in. That is all that matters. After all, nobody at the airport knows you got married (unless you turn up in the wedding dress :rofl )
Reply
And as has been said before - there is no legal obligation to change your surname on marriage and as long as the names on passport and ticket match you can continue to use your existing passport until it expires. I have a married friend who even after 30 years of marriage still chooses to keep her passport in her maiden name and it was never an issue, even when travelling with the children who did take their Dad's surname. She still uses her maiden name on her cheques for the joint account too and this has never been a problem either.

I'm going back to 1989 but when I booked the honeymoon I did so in my wifes married name to be, obviously her passport was in her maiden name however the airport accepted the original marriage certificate as proof of name change, I do not know whether this would still be accepted with the new security arrangements, I would ring the travel company and ask their advice, if they say a wedding certificate together with passport is OK ask for confirmation via email and take that with you as well.

The new photo rules are an absolute farce!

It's cost me £30 to get 3 sets of photos done - my first lost were rejected becos' of my specs so had to take them off for second try which is a joke as I NEVER not wear my specs and the post ofice woman said my second lot were borderline becos' of size - well if I'm in a booth how the hell can I change the size of my head in the pic for God's sake?

My little girls first lot were rejected as having too much glare on her forehead and my little boys first lot were rejected as being too light - they were done in a shop specialising in passport photos as trying to sit 2 6 year olds in a booth without smiling was impossible.

The check and send service offered at a cost by the post office is a rip off - they refused to check my second lot of photos even tho' I'd spent £21 on the service!

I have very nearly lost the will to live these past few weeks - seems like they let everyone into this country of ours but the minute we want to get out for a holiday they make it really difficult for us and the cost of a child's 5 year passport at £46 as opposed to an adults 10 year passport at £72 is a total rip off.

There I do feel slightly better for getting that off my chest but I think from now on we'll stick to holidaying in this country - anything to save the hassle we've just had!

Hi tisonlymoi, After my rant about passport photos earlier on in this thread I also feel exactly the same, A couple of days later after they sent a letter rejecting my first sons photo they then sent me another letter rejecting my second sons photo but the reason this time was the photo was "too small", we specifically measured the photos before we sent them off so i cannot understand how it is too small?? I was beginning to think they had it in for us. What I cannot understand is how come they sent each childs photo back seperatly 2 days apart when I sent both off together in same envelope? No wonder they charge as much for passport renewals, it will be to cover the cost of all those letters they send out to say the photos are rejected.......and I totally agree the price for a renewal is disgraceful....and to think this time next year I will have to go through it all again with son number 3 :(
I have sent off a second lot of photos for both my boys so lets hope these are not rejected or I too will be losing the will to live...our holiday will be upon us before I get the passports back at this rate and to think I filled the forms in in early Feb thinking I was being very organised for once :que

Well Thankfully the new photos have been accepted, one of my boys passports has already arrived via courier and an e mail from the IPS has confirmed my other sons has gone to print so I should get that in a few days. I havn't received back the boys old expired passports yet plus the photos I sent that were no good, do we still get back expired passports these days or have they stopped that? Would these follow on in a few days via normal post do you think? I'm sure they did that last time?

Also what I'd like to know is, these new passports that have a chip in them, are they ok to keep in your bag near a mobile phone? It does say not to expose to magnetic fields or microwaves?

Hi all.

With regards to passport photo's, I have found that the "check and send" service at the Post Office is ideal because the counter assistant will check the suitability of your photo's.Obviously there is a fee for this service but it will save you time by not having to re-submit photo's to the IPS and also all your details can be checked just in case there is anything missed out.

With regards to kazies post, there are only two options (I think!).One is to book the holiday in your present name (that matches your passport) and the other is to pay for a new passport and book it in your married name.My wife and I have just had the same problem. We booked a holiday before we decided to get married and had to travel on her maiden name but we have booked a holiday for this July and have just sent away for a new passport even though there are about 5 years left on her old one.Unfortunately you will have to pay the full fee. What you do is entirely up to yourself but myself personally think "what is the point in getting married and then continuing to use your maiden name?".

Dave, If you read tisonlymoi's post a couple up on this thread she said she paid £21 for the post office check and send service and they refused to check her second lot of photos....Some post offices might do this but obviously not all :(

Hi twinkletoes

That's not so good. The P.O. must have charged her three times. We used the photo booth in our local main P.O. and it is designed specifically for passport photo's.Even I was surprised when the lady asked us if we used their machine because they turned out so well!

So what name are you proposing to take now Dave? ;)

As many a married man has discovered to his cost, and many a co-habiting woman has discovered to hers, the real point in getting married is to protect your financial position and your parenting rights. This is why same sex couples have been lobbying so hard for the right to marry and have the same legal protection as mixed sex couples who decide to get married. A friend who is a family law solicitor has always said, not entirely joking, that no man in his right mind would get married if he wanted to protect his financial and property his assets, and no woman in her right mind would settle for anything less. Guess Heather heeded his advice and Paul didn't :rofl

Hi SMa.

I guess one of my reasons for getting married (apart from loving my wife to bits) was to give my other half some "protection" should anything ever happen to me as I wouldn't want my ex-wife to get a brass farthing!

Hi i'm in the middle of filling in my daughters renewal passport form and have made a mistake on it
where it asks you what county you are from I put tyen instead of tyne will this make any difference?
or shall I wait til the post office opens again and fill out another form?
The reason I ask is that her head teacher was going to countersign it on tuesday before the school hols
But it looks like I will have to wait til they go back to school if the mistake is not acceptable
any help much appreciated
Reply
I presume it's in the little boxes - can you go over them? and above write TYNE I'm not sure if this will be acceptable - perhaps a phone call to your local PO that deals with passport applications will help as they should know if this is ok. If not you can nip down and get another passport application and fill it in before taking it to the school.
