Hi, am new to site but have enjoyed reading many topics.
We have recentley returned from the Eastern Algarve for a short break, and were delighted with the area. We ( Sue and I ), stayed at Cabanas, near Taveria, and found it to be such a quaint, pretty and fairly unspoilt little town ( though there is a lot of building work going on-hope it does'nt spoil it). It was very peaceful, and served as a great base for exploring the surrounding area. It had all the facilities we needed, shops, bars, restaurants ATMs etc, with friendly locals. We booked the appartment from Owners Direct, which proved to be simple and cost effective. The owner met us on arrival, which was a nice touch. Although fairly early on in the season, most places were open, except the water taxi, which was a disappointment.
We spent every day exploring the beautiful little villages and beaches. Taveria was lovely and we enjoyed boat trip to Ilha de Taveria. Even had a visit over the border to Spain, but was not impressed with Isla Canella or the area-very man made and appeared to be a ghost town out of season. All in all we had a fab time, and have already booked to return to Cabanas in early September and we can't wait. If anyone has any views on this area, or tips for places to visit, we'd be very interested in hearing them.
Pat42 is the person you need Pat has been holidaying in this area for I think it's 20 years. Through Pat, we too visited Cabana's in September last year and are going again in July.
I had a lovely holiday in Cabanas when my children were younger. It's hard to beleive there is a place this unspoilt but with enough facilities for tourists this close to Faro and Tavira is the icing on the cake so to speak. This was a few years ago so I hope they haven't gone too mad with the buildingworks. I am biased though as for a short haul destination the Algarve is at the top of my list. Went to the far west this year which we also enjoy.
I have been visiting Cabanas twice a year for a long time and my hubby and I love it there. So if you have anything you want to know specifically about the area, just ask.
You didn't say if you were hiring a car or using public transport.
However places to go include Vila Real do Santo Antonio, Monte Gordo, Altura, Castro Marim (conservation area with beautiful scenery), Tavira, Olhao, Fuzeta. These are all in the east of Faro. You can also go across the border and visit Seville which is amazing.
The people in Cabanas are so friendly and I'm glad you enjoyed your stay there but please,..........keep it quiet........we want it to remain as it is
We are goin back in 7 weeks time and will also be there in September 11-25th, so we might bump into you
If you need restaurant recommendations, I can tell you our favourites!!!
Pat
Many thanks.
The water taxi will definitely be running in September. I think it ends about October. The beach is beautiful and you can walk for miles.
Mariscos e Petiscos is wonderful as is Grelha Peixe next doors and run by the same family. We stay in the apartments there.
Personally I think Pedro's is overpriced and overrated. Along from there is O Monteiro which I think is also good. On the main front is Solmar and the food in there is good too.
The place you are talking about is the Little Orange. I have never been in it as it is an English restaurant (no offence but we prefer to go to Portuguese places). I have known many people who have been there and said it was very good.
Where is your apartment.....is it at Quinto da Gomeira? (that is where most of the apartments from owners direct are). If so you will have seen the Cabanas brasserie which is not bad. But for great value at a cheap price, try O Escalho next doors (cafe/bar) where you can get snacks or main meals all home cooked.

Antoher nice place to visit just over the border is Spain is Ayemonte. You can either drive there or take the ferry across from Villa Real.
