Like my last report (to Goa) we could only spare one week, however this time I planned it like a military operation as I knew there would be so much to do. We already had a fair idea of which shows we wanted to go to and the places we wanted to visit so set out to pre-book as much on line as we could, however the only show discount we could come up with was for ‘Mamma Mia' at Mandalay Bay for half price (55 Dollars each) so booked that for the Monday night. ‘Tours' were a different matter though and after much deliberation opted for the Grand Canyon Super Deluxe Air/Helicopter Tour for the Monday, the Desert Safari Hummer Adventure Tour for the Tuesday, the 5 Dollar all day trip to Laughlin for the Wednesday, and the Hoover Dam and Ethel M's Chocolate Factory for the Thursday - all through lasvegasgrandcanyontour.com
When the confirmation emails came through we were surprised and a little worried to find that the above people appear to be a booking agency only and that each tour had been sub contracted out to other companies, some of which we had already passed over for various reasons. Our fears proved to be groundless as you will see.
We flew out from Gatwick at about midday on Saturday with US Airways, flying out via Philadelphia and scheduled to return via Charlotte and confess at this stage that my knowledge of American geography meant that I thought that the internal part of the flight would only be about two hours - it turned out to be nearly five hours! About half way across the Atlantic I suddenly discovered I'd left my jacket on the ‘detector' thing at Gatwick - Ooops"¦
Now when we booked the holiday (through Holidaysupermarket.com) there was a drop-down section called ‘meal preference' so we selected ‘seafood' and promptly forgot about it, so we were quite surprised to be served Salmon Steaks when everybody else got Beef or Pasta for lunch, and then Prawn Salad for tea when all the other passengers got a Cheese Roll - Of course we both felt really guilty about this as you can imagine! The wait at Philadelphia was about two hours which passed quickly enough and after spotting the Hoover Dam from high up we landed in Vegas at about eight thirty in the evening - I'd already been warned that there would see slot machines as soon as we got off the aircraft but this still came as a bit of a shock!
Hotel transfer was quick and painless as we had already booked this through ‘Showtime' and we arrived at the Imperial Palace approximately twenty four hours after leaving our house, walking into a cacophony of sound and lights the like of which I have never experienced before in a hotel. After checking in (very quick) we had to wheel our suitcases through what appeared to be total bedlam and I began to think that we had made a terrible mistake in coming to Vegas. Although very tired we had already decided that we needed to eat something light and do a short bit of sight-seeing before going to bed so set off for the Mirage to catch the much vaunted Volcano Eruption only to discover that it is closed for renovation until the autumn - so much for all my pre-planning!
Denny's appeared to be the best choice for a quick meal, and so it proved, with the server commenting on how tired we looked and rushing through our order. Jill went for a Cheeseburger and I settled for Fish Goujons - Both very nice, a total of 28 Dollars including tip (and not my usual ‘Never Eat Yellow Snow'). A short stroll found us back at the Imperial Palace and after threading our way back though the daunting Casino, including people apparently playing Bingo, we retired for the night - It would be breakfast before we'd discover that it wasn't Bingo at all!
More to follow if the reviews are favourable. :-)
