Someone had an Itsa at our hotel in Crete last week. The sunbeds were very low though, and the Itsa pockets were on the ground getting wet from the splashed pool water Still a good idea, and none of the Germans/Eastern Europeans moved her towel off the bed because it was more securely fastened on than ours!
One guy had an Itsa but it was a bit long for the sunbeds. Everyone admired it though but being a bloke he had beggar all to put in the pockets anyway.
After perspiring profusely for a couple of hours, while lounging on Stalis beach last week , I decided that a cool drink was the way to go. The pool bar was about 25 metres away. After wrapping myself in my sarong, and plonking my by now, faded hat on my head, I started strutting away. I hadn't banked on the boiling hot sand, and by the time I got half way, I was running and literally jumped onto a sunbed as my feet were burning. Thank God there was no one on it at the time, but I must have looked a right wally. Euro chic - I think not.
It doesn't matter what I wear, as guaranteed my husband would be wearing flower patterned shorts and a stripy t shirt e.t.c (DEFINATELY THINGS THAT DON'T MATCH), so everyone knows we're british!! Sometimes it's fine as he lets me choose his outfits, so I make sure they co-ordinate, but a lot of the time, he picks his own clothes . His response to this is, I'm on holidays where nobody knows me so I don't care!!! He also says the less clothes he takes, the more room that's in the suitcase for my stuff (how can I argue with that)? Unfortunately people see the holiday snaps! It wouldn't bother me if he had nothing, but he has some really nice expensive clothes MEN!!!!!!!!
Just like Pippa's OH, I'm of the Nelson size, and we short men have to take even more care with our attire, or what looks great on the model becomes an outfit for hilarity. Luckily, I've discovered a couple of mail order outlets which include clothing for the shorter man, as well as good old BHS doing an extra short leg chino. So, at least, I can try to look a)normal amd b) human!
In Turkey this summer my favourite outfit was a plain vest top (several in differnt colours) with a long green flowing skirt, brought together well if I say do myself by a wide hipster belt. I felt cool, chic and very understated compared to the acres of too fat legs with bad cellulite in mini skirts or the male equivalent in Union Jack shorts with great gut hanging over and no t shirt on!
My boyfriend always wears jeans and a shirt in the evening....even when really hot. Now, you don't see any Brit men in jeans I noticed but the locals all were! He lived in Italy for many years and to him casual men's chic is jeans but with a nice shirt for an evening. He looked lovely.
You are right squirrel, more is sometimes less (as in flowing fabric) and less is also more (as in non fussy). My best vest top was £15 some 10 or more years ago and is still going strong and fits well. So why do I find myself purchasing cheap ones for less than a fiver? I guess I expect them to not last for whatever reason, even though history has told me they do.
Well I lived in my T shirts in the day but wore a shirt with a collar in the evenings. The trousers were worn (once) and they are now in the wardrobe waiting for term to start. I actually only wore shorts twice as we were either in a city or on the cruise ship. I didn't fancy the pool as it was always crowded so the union jack shorts never got an outing. However the 'Chiefs cap' was worn everyday sporting a Canadian flag pin on the side. The Chicago Bears T shirt I wore for breakfast one morning got me better service as the maitre di was a Bears fan! The Original Six Ice Hockey jacket that I wore both ways on the plane and on some evenings got me into quite a few conversations in Canadian bars!
just read this post so funny.clothes dont make the lady and hey at least we have personality.these posts sound so familar its good to be normal i dont have time for all that girlie stuff, more so on my holidays let it all hang out thats what i say
Anyway, off to Fuerteventura in 10½ weeks, and already on a mission to look a little more glam this time, especially as it'll just be me and 2 skinny fashionable 16 year-olds...
* Found some lovely white denim jean shorts in the sale for £5 in Top Shop, good replacement for my beloved Primark ones which are now very yellow from 3 holidays' worth of suncream stains, and will never be white again.
* Also sorted out some nice evening tops I've had a while and will probably never wear in the evenings again, hoping they'd look a bit more glam during the day than my usual £2 Primark vest tops.
* Been in front of the mirror fiddling with my hair in various funky plaits etc to try and avoid the usual "scraped-up chav-facelift" style during the day.
* Now looking for a fantastic "designer-style-but-Primark-price" bag for carrying daytime stuff around.
Mission continues....
My Saress or whatever it was called is still tucked away in my drawer upstairs . Tried it once and the sleeve hooks just kept falling down which meant the whole thing was hanging off every time I bent over. I gave up + it looked shite on me anyway

Down to 15kg luggage allowance for the Dom Rep in the summer. Don't know what's going to go yet, but 10lbs of clothes less is a hell of a lot - might have to swap my hats for a 4 corner knotted hankie
We only have 15kg luggage for our summer hol so I will have to cut back drastically. I might invest in some new sarongs for the day as they're so light. I'll have to get the hang of tying them the EUROCHIC way
Can I compete with silicone enhanced, flat tummied, glitzy bikinied, mahogony tanned, botoxed freezefaced lovelies who grace the shores of the carribean ? mmmm....
Right, can't do big boobs, chicken fillets in me bikini will have to do, flat tummy ? I'll breath in and hurt meeself, glitzy bikini ? got some sequins somewhere, mahogony tan ? kiwi boot polish should do the job, botox ? well, maybe if I scrape my hair back to the point of hurtiness may do it !
seriously though, I reckon my american/ canadian fellow holidaymakers won't really care what I look like as long as I keep talking to them in my luvverly northern accent !!
cheers,
juby
I wouldn't worry. My experience of the Americans in the Caribbean (well Dom Rep at least) is that they have far bigger tummies than the Europeans They also have mouths to match. I mean that in the nicest possible way, but they don't half like to talk on the tops of their voices
I've already bought some cropped jeans from the Next sale for summer/holidays. I tell myself I'm not going to be buying much for this year's hols but I probably will.
I want to know will people who bought ISTA's and whatever the other things were called that were like a dress/sarong thing be digging them out of the wardrobes to take on holiday with them this year ?
I was good last year didnt take any plastic carrier bags with me, bought special canvas bags from M&S to put towels etc in thinking this would look cool. Needless to say they got all damp and soggy. So no Euro Chic going on there.
I'm more than likely going to America so I think I will be quite comfortable wearing my muffin top there as its the land of muffins.
We don't bother with special beach bags etc, just an ordinary rucksack. The small/medium size, carries water bottles, books, towels and everything else. Easier to carry as well.
