:hyper :hyper Oh oh oh, I am so exicted to read another trip report! I never tire of them and if that is just day 1 then I can't wait to read the rest.

BTW, if you feel up to it it may be a good idea to do a trip report for New Mexico while it's still fresh. You never know who may be looking for information in the future.

Day 2, August 18th 2008

After what can only be described as the perfect nights sleep in the glorious king bed the first decision of the day was where to eat for breakfast? I wanted a buffet, Kelly didn't. I put on my parts and within half an hour we were on our way down to the Grand Buffet in the MGM. There is a lot of bad press out there for the MGM Buffet but the breakfast one is normally spared the full brunt and with a good experience last year, we felt it was worth another crack. There was a small but moving queue to pay ($14.99pp), and then to wait to be seated. Quite why no groups of 2-4 had decided to fill the quite obvious 2nd line available to be seated I do not know, so we headed up there, right to the front with many annoyed looks from people thinking "why didn't we do that?". DOH!!
Amazingly we had the same server as last year, a face you never forget and very welcoming and more importantly quick on the refills. She told us to go up and get some food and the drinks would be ready on our return. She was spot on. The food was excellent, Kel did moan about a semi stale bagel (was it really?, I don't think so) but all in all it was a fine spread and after 3 or 4 platefuls and copious amounts of Diet Coke for me, and OJ and Coffee for Kel we tipped our server and headed out very full.
Today we felt refreshed and revitalised. I think the travelling just wears you down, even if it was only a 45min car journey from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, and then a 90min flight to Vegas. After the relative disappointments yesterday and having to deal with the heat and crowds, I am pleased to say that today was a better experience. There were literally hundreds (probably thousands) of people checking out (Monday) following their weekend partying and the MGM itself seemed less busy and the strip as a whole.
Today was our first show, the 2.30pm show of Scarlett - Princess of Magic at the V Theater in Planet Hollywood, so we were aware of that when we set our feet outside and walked over to the Monte Carlo.
Despite obviously being a very impressive looking hotel the Monte Carlo is one place we often skate around, and once again this happened. There just isn't the same kind of wow factor you find in other hotels, and despite their efforts to encourage the party crowd with Diablo's bar and restaurant (awful experience last year), it just doesn't hit it off with us. So just as soon as we entered we exited and then walked past the monstrosity that is the City Center development. I say monstrosity but that is unfair, when complete it is going to be outstanding but at the moment it is a huge construction site and not very pleasant to walk past. This is also one of the reasons why we were not disappointed about not getting a strip view room, as the construction completely dominates this area. Still, the city moves on and in 2009 which is the scheduled completion date it will add so much to the strip. You only have to watch the promotional video on the TV in any MGM property to see that.
So after being constructed out, we found our way to the Bellagio. There is no better hotel lobby in my opinion in Vegas, beautifully decorated and leading through to the conservatory as well. It is always such a pleasure to walk around the conservatory and each trip there has been something new to look at. I was very impressed with the scale model of the Bellagio including mini fountains and a small LCD TV under the Bellagio sign. The attention to detail was amazing. Unfortunately I have never had much luck in the Bellagio gambling and after a few bucks in a 25c slot, nothing changed on that score. After marvelling at some more of the hotel, we ventured out and across the road firstly to cool down in the Flamingo, and then onto Bally's and Paris. Bally's is just a typical casino and with lower ceilings to me does feel a bit claustraphobic and smokey, it does however offer some of the best value on the strip according to our ATV guide last year. I'm not so sure. I could never see myself staying there when the MGM and other such properties are selling rooms for $69 a night (sometimes lower). What I do like about Bally's is the link through to Paris, and the obvious attraction of the big Slot Machine. There is a nice fountain area there which you can sit down at and watch people waste their money. Suffice to say, in the 15mins we watched nobody won anything significant amount and in most cases bet higher just to finish the experience and get away from the watching crowds.
Paris is a lovely themed casino/hotel and after grabbing a couple of drinks from a vendor we spent a good while in there checking everything out. We are always amazed at just how busy the Paris Buffet is, literally queues every minute of the day. We later found out that the Tix4tonite outlets offer discounts for this buffet on a daily basis, breakfast as low as $9.99 which compares favourably to the MGM which costs $14.99. We never did take up the offer, but if anybody wants a well reviewed and cheap buffet head to the Tix4tonite counter and check to see if they still have the Paris deal. You might have a wait when you get there, but at that price it must be worth it?
Leaving Paris, it was getting close to our magic show in Planet Hollywood so we opted to head into the Miracle Mile shops and take a look there on our way to the box office. I do like the Miracle Mile but since my favourite shop Eddie Bauer shut down, there is little of interest to me. It wasn't long therefore before we were outside the V Theater and at that stage, with legs a little weary we decided to pick the tickets up and just wait for the show to start. I had actually bought these tickets for nothing from Goldstar.com a few weeks before leaving the UK, although I did have to pay $7.50 in fees per ticket. For us it was an opportunity to see an up and coming star during the afternoon, and at that price was too good to miss. It soon became clear to us that there were quite a few people with the same idea and the general admission queue started to form. We decided to join it, and about 15mins later we were led into the V Theater.
I had seen some bad reviews for this theater and to be honest was a little surprised to just see standard chairs placed down in rows but the good thing was we were close to the stage. Having not seen one single review for this show upon leaving the UK, we were not sure what to expect but in the end we did enjoy it. It was fairly basic magical illusions but for me the highlight was Scarlett, she is absolutely gorgeous. The show lasted about an hour and it was done quite well. Obviously she has been given her big break and isn't the finished article by any means, but for the price and to escape the heat and rest weary legs, it was well worth it. I'm not sure I would pay anymore than $20pp for the show (which is the current Goldstar price, regular is $40) but if people have kids it might be the ideal show to take them to. All in all, not bad....and did I say she is gorgeous?
With the time approaching 4ish by the time we got out of the Miracle Mile we decided to head back to the MGM. We were feeling pretty shattered having been on the go since 10am, and after a stop off at Walgreens and a rather lengthy wait for a lift (2 were out) we were back in the room. We chilled for a few hours watching TV and might even have had a little shut eye (don't tell the MGM though, I know they want you down in the casino!!!).
Choice of dinner tonight was House of Blues again in Mandalay Bay (this journey was becoming quite familiar). To be honest we've always had great meals in HOB's throughout the USA and have enjoyed a couple in the Las Vegas restaurant as well. Main reason for going, their cornbread!!! To die for!!! After a massive buffet breakfast I was not overly hungry (I must have been ill) so I opted for a Chicken Fingers appetiser which still came with fries. Kel had the Chef's special Ground Chicken Sandwich which was very good, and of course we had a side of cornbread. The bill was around the $35 mark for two people (amazing value), and again we passed up on dessert. What is wrong with us????
Plan tonight was to gamble a bit more and hopefully take advantage of an improved drinks service at the MGM. Did we get it? Did we heck. I didn't think the MGM drinks service was that great last year when gambling but this time it sucked big time and didn't really get any better over the rest of the holiday. Whether it was because it was August and maybe they were running on reduced staff I don't know, but there were certainly not as many drinks servers around the slots as there were last year. We got the token two Bud Lights each, gambled for an hour or so but the slots were tight again. My favourite machine from previous trips (25c Triple Stars non progressive) was seriously taking me for a ride this time even at max credit. I don't mind losing, but I like to get some free drinks out of it if I am going to lose. I was falling out of love with the MGM right before my very eyes. Fortunately Kelly was having better luck on random machines she was choosing, so we did come away with some money that night. I sucked big time.
After a long day of walking and high temperatures, it was time to hit that king bed again. Very welcome it was!!

More to follow tomorrow, my fingers ache now!!! Hope you are enjoying them, apologies if they are overly long. :cheers

Can't resist just one more day!!!

Day 3, August 19th 2008

The MGM might not have got the drinks service right and the slots might suck, but we certainly had no qualms about the bed and the room as a whole. Another lovely night's sleep meant we woke up very refreshed again and ready for another crack at the strip. First decision as always, where to eat? I won the buffet vote yesterday but today it was a fairly unananimous decision to eat at America in New York New York, their 24 hour restaurant and a place we have enjoyed on countless occasions before. After the short walk across the strip bridge to NYNY we waded through the construction site to the entrance and with no queue were seated practically immediately. It was slightly later today and we were concerned that breakfast might have turned into lunch. We got caught out before on a trip in 2004, just missing the breakfast menu by minutes which led to me have chicken and country gravy, with mashed potatoes for breakfast!!! Lovely. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on how much you like chicken for breakfast) we made it and sat down and were served by a lovely Mexican guy whose name escapes me. Drinks were served very quickly, Diet Coke for me, OJ and Coffee again for Kel. For food I opted for the Eggs Benedict with Hash Browns, and Kel had a mixture of toast, oatmeal and a bagel. Although very tasty, we did notice that prices have gone up since last year and at the end of the breakfast we were paying out about the same as two buffets at the MGM (i.e. around $30). Service was good though, and he seemed more than happy with his tip, so off we went with first port of call today being Planet Hollywood. We were once again aware of the fact to keep an eye on the time as we had two shows booked today, the 4pm Dirk Arthur Magic Show at the Tropicana and Zumanity at NYNY.
We arrived at Planet Hollywood around midday and decided to sign up for their A List Players Card to see what they offered with it. To my surprise it was actually a very good deal. You get a pocket voucher booklet with lots of drinks offers (free Miller Chill, BOGOFs etc), $5 off buffets, discount off Planet Daillies and Earl of Sandwich, VIP upgrade on Stomp tickets plus a lot more. Also for giving them your email address they give you $5 free slot play and a free spin to win other prizes. We didn't win, but the woman in front won two buffets. There is also a voucher to get an extra $15 free slot play after a certain coin in. All in all very impressed, and to be honest we spent most of the early afternoon there taking advantage (not of the drinks offers though, too early for beer). Obviously the deals are geared up to make you spend time there, but why not? I must admit I never really liked the change from the Aladdin before, but now I love it and would certainly consider PH for our hotel choice next time.
After coining in enough to get our $15 free slot play we bummed out, but still had a good time. After this we headed to the ticket office at the Theater at PH to pick up our Sheryl Crow tickets. Some of you might remember that I booked an extra night to attend the gig to surprise my wife, well she found out whilst I was reading my emails in Albuquerque. Ticketmaster had sent a reminder about the show......so the surprise backfired but she was very happy to be going to the gig. We left PH down about $20, but with tummies rumbling just a little and knowing that we wouldn't be eating until after Zumanity tonight we tucked into a shared Earl of Sandwich Hawaiian Chicken sandwich which was outstanding.
Time really had flown today and we decided to head to the Tropicana to pick up our Dirk Arthur tickets. I hate the Trop, it might be old school but it is a smokey dingy old hole and I hope they finally bring it down as they have promised to do for years now. Still, the show was taking place here and there was nothing we could do about it. Tickets were again purchased from Goldstar.com at a measly $13pp (also available for a similar price at Tix4tonite most days) and we were looking forward to seeing a more established entertainer. The general admission queue snaked around the theatre so we joined it quite quickly with half an hour to go before seating commenced. It went quite quickly, but I didn't really enjoy standing in a claustraphobic corridor, it's not my ideal way of waiting for a show to be honest. Anyway, to the show....well no, I'll start with the theatre. How bizzare!!! Its actually a very nice theatre, good size but for some reason the chairs don't face the stage. You sit with seats either side of a table facing each other i.e. like you are at a wedding or similar. You then have to crane your neck around to see the stage. Fortunately we sat next to a Chinese family of three that didn't take up much space at all, so we just moved our chairs round to face the stage. In the end we had a great view, but there were people very disappointed at not being able to see very easily. The show itself bordered cheesy at times but I actually found Dirk Arthur to be very likeable and he is a good illusionist. One of the major benefits is you get to see huge tigers appear and disappear before your very eyes, most of which are endangered and there is a part-eco theme to the show with a filmed segment on how they care for the animals. The tigers seemed happy enough which is always a good thing, and at the end of the show I felt it was well worth the money and time. No doubt Lance Burton and David Copperfield are probably better entertainers, but for a fraction of the cost, you can see a fairly honest guy doing a job he loves with animals he loves. For kids, or as a break from the heat etc it is probably worth it.
After the show we knew we had limited time before we had to head out again to NYNY for Zumanity so it was back to the MGM for a quick rest, shower and change, and as we did that in record time we opted to stop by the West Wing to get our free drinks offer that came with our room rate. I quite like the West Wing Bar, very chilled, but for me the waitress was too chilled. It took an age for her to come over and serve, so much so I nearly went up and ordered the drinks myself like any true Brit would do!!! Fortunately we timed it well and it was happy hour, so we got 4 drinks for nothing but a tip. Great value, and a nice little loosener in readiness for Zumanity.
Onto Zumanity, a show which has more up and downs in terms of reviews than a roller coaster. We were ready to hate it, but we actually loved it. The theatre is outstanding, much smaller and more intimate than other CDS theatres and although we were up in the balcony, we were right in the front row and had a great view. The show itself is billed as the sensual side of Cirque De Soleil and that is a pretty good description. It's not erotic, well unless you call bare breasts erotic which I suppose they are to a degree. If you want titilation I would go elsewhere but for a good laugh and some outstanding acts, it is well worth seeing. The guy in the large ring was probably the best CDS act I have seen in any of the shows so far. One thing I was glad of is that we did not sit downstairs, there is a huge amount of audience participation, but all done with tongue firmly in cheek. For $50 each, it was an excellent night and I'm pleased we took the plunge in the end and went for it.
After the show we really wanted somewhere close to eat as time was getting on. In the end, despite vowing never to return after an awful experience in Denver, we headed to the ESPN Zone. To my astonishment there was a wait time of 20mins despite clearly tables being available, still we opted to wait and about 5mins later our buzzer went off and we were seated in a huge 8 person booth. Our server came over and grunted something at us and walked off. At this point I felt uncomfortable in such a big booth and it was a bit tight around the old waistline as well, so we asked to move. He muttered something again, and we chose a 4 seater table closeby. It actually turned out we had moved to a different servers section but the guy didn't seem to care, he could obviously get a better tip from 6 or more people sitting in a booth than two tight fisted English people. Snotty git, not a good start. Anyway we had a girl server and she was very nice (to start with) and we ordered drinks and both went for the Ribs & Chicken combo which was not cheap at $20.99 each. The food came, we were congratulated on our choice by the guy who brought them out and we tucked in. Excellent meal, but what happened to the server? She was great to start with but then was getting chatted up by some Dudes on an adjoining table and she went to pot. Refills were hard to come by, our plates were left on the table for way too long and then she just brought the bill. We didn't want dessert anyway but it would have been nice to have been asked. Yes we just ate huge meals, but we have big stomachs and we are on holiday after all. We paid the bill on debit card as I hadn't expected to pay so much and tipped just a little down on what I thought was fair. She was too away with the fairies to notice anyway. Good food, lousy service, pretty much like most ESPN Zones. Disney need to pull their fingers out on this chain!!!
After the meal we decided to try our luck in the NYNY construction, I mean casino as the MGM clearly wasn't playing ball. We did get far better drinks service (three this time) but the slots still sucked. We decided that perhaps it wasn't just an MGM thing and that we were going to bum out on winning anything major this trip. As we walked back through the MGM, typically I spot about 700 cocktail waitresses around the slots. Ah well, it had been a good day with two great shows and some good food. Time for bed.

Thoroughly enjoying it.

Great tip about the Happy Hour at the West Wing bar. We didn't know they had one and only had the two drinks. I read somewher that someone was told they couldn't have cocktails, only beers, but we got cocktails in May.

That may have been us. We had two cocktails, charged them to the room as instructed, but they only allowed us $12 total comp. I complained and got the money refunded since there was nowhere on the offer paperwork that mentioned a limit. Since the cheapest beers were $6 and our cocktails were $12.50 each, they didn't lose much on the deal. It annoyed me a bit though.

Enjoying the report so far. Did you find it too hot? Would you go at that time of year again? I think my heat limit is June. That was hot enough for me.

I'm glad most of you are enjoying my reports so far.

The interesting thing about the West Wing drinks is that they don't come off the bill automatically like the $25 dining credit does, so we had to ask for the charge to be removed at checkout. Worth keeping an eye on the bill on a daily basis on the TV if you are charging everything to the room so it stays fresh in your mind.

Pebbles, to be honest after the Sunday debacle with the huge crowds in the MGM and the pool area the temperature didn't really cause a problem, but we had just come from high 80's in New Mexico. Low humidity makes such a difference, sure you sweat, but it's not like Florida where your clothes get ruined. I was very surprised at how busy Vegas was in August, but then again when you see some of the deals that were kicking around for our dates (MGM as low as $49, Excalibur $41, Luxor $51, Monte Carlo $60 etc etc) it does encourage people to go and obviously weekends were going to be busy. Fortunately we caught the end of one weekend and the beginning of another and had quite a pleasant midweek with less crowds. As for your question, no I don't think I would go back in August. Although we managed well (I think we have acclimatised to heat since our RTW trip in 2006) I still found June to be better, and even Mid September was a lot cooler.

I will do Day 4 soon.....

Day 4, August 20th 2008

Forgot to mention in my description of yesterday that we also ordered Hot Wings at ESPN Zone and they were the hottest I have ever tasted in my life. You know it's a bit overpowering when you are licking the cold from your glass of Diet Coke!!!
As we had eaten quite late the night before we decided to have a lighter breakfast this morning and opted for the excellent Stage Deli in the MGM Grand near the Rainforest Cafe. Kel had a bagel with cream cheese and I had marble cake, washed down with our usual OJ and Diet Coke respectively. It filled us up nicely and was dirt cheap at $9. It made a nice change to get back to cheaper breakfasts like in New Mexico, but we were obviously aware we would need some lunch at some point during the day.
I was looking forward to today the most as it was Mystere night at T.I. a show we both have been looking forward to seeing for ages now, plus it meant we would be utilising the monorail for the first time. The idea was to get a 24hour ticket at around lunchtime and then utilise it again the next day for an outward journey. We ventured down to the ticket machines in the MGM and found out that the $9 24 hour ticket is no longer, it is now $12...still reasonable value I would say if you intend to use it quite a bit in those 24 hours. Anyway, we hopped onto the monorail with barely a wait and we headed down to Sahara. Sahara I hear you say? Yes, don't ask me why, the plan was to go to Wynn to sign up for their Red Club and we just thought we'd get off at Sahara and walk up but of course we could have got off at the Convention Center and got the free Wynn shuttle. Ah well, it didn't matter we could have a wander through the Sahara and take it from there. At this point I would like to add that you really notice the difference in quality between the Sahara and a hotel like the Tropicana. Sure, the Sahara is way north of anything (apart from the Strat) but everything is just so much nicer. I still probably would never stay there but it does have a certain charm, and I still fondly remember turning free slot play into a nice little winner last year there. Aside from a toilet stop inside, we soon found our way out onto the strip again and into the heat. I don't know why but it just seems hotter this end of the strip, which frankly is a stupid thing to say, but there I've said it.
On our way to the Wynn we stopped off at Ross Dress for Less, or as we like to call, Ross Dross for Less. Yes it's TK Maxx (AKA TK Caxx) with isles and isles of clothes that don't fit properly or that nobody would ever think of wearing. I must admit to having very little luck ever in Ross but Kel has got some real bargains over the years including DKNY jeans for $20. I still wear my $5 San Diego Padres t-shirt with Klesko on the back that I bought from an Orlando Ross, apparently the worst player to ever play for the Padres!!! It was not much better this time, and everybody stared. It is a bit pikey isn't it? I ended up getting a pair of Dickies boxer shorts for $3, Kel fared slightly better with some nice Nike tracksuit bottoms for $9, oh and we also bought some hair clippers so I could have a haircut back at the MGM. I was starting to look a little fuzzbuzz, and being slight of hair, it doesn't look good. Plus of course I might bump into Scarlett any minute and I would like to look my best for that!!!
After coming out of Ross hotter than when we were walking on the strip we grabbed some drinks and continued our walk to the Wynn. We had toyed with the idea of going in Circus Circus for the first time since 2002 but came to our senses quite quickly and bypassed it. I did want to go on the water ride in the Adventuredome, but it wasn't worth the hassle, plus we were already kidded out from going in the Excalibur on the Sunday.
We finally arrived at the Wynn and I managed to stuff the Ross Dross bag into Kelly's day bag so they let us in!!! In fairness, I've never felt out of place in the Wynn, yes it is upmarket but they do make you feel welcome, especially if you hit the casino floor. We signed up for the Red Club and found out that you need 25 points before you can spin the wheel for free stuff, but for giving them your email address you do get $10 free slot play so it is well worth signing up for it. My $10 lasted about 2 minutes on the 25c playing max credit, Kel again fared better with some wins and she actually cashed out $7 so I like to think that we did Steve Wynn over on this occasion. After checking our points balance and seeing 1 & 2 respectively we agreed that 25 points was probably going to take some gambling and decided to move on. We had a look at the Lake of Dreams and a few other things and then went outside and crossed the road to the Fashion Show Mall.
In the past we have spent ages in the mall but on this occasion we decided we'd shopped enough in New Mexico and didn't really feel like walking around loads of shops so we opted for Subway and a shared chicken breast footlong for $5 and of course a 44oz Diet Coke for the princely sum of $8 in total. We also won two instant wins on the promotion on the Diet Coke and went up to claim only to be told you have to order something first. Eh? Not really instant then is it? I muttered that in the UK you can just go up and get them but the Gringo behind the counter was having none of it. Kel said to leave them on the table for someone else to use but feeling hard done by I chucked them in the bin. What a meanie!!
Feeling full from the Subway we then decided to continue our trek up the Strip (or down depending on your perspective) and had our first ever visit to the Palazzo. Very impressed and I like how they linked it with the Venetian. To be honest the shops are not really our cup of tea but it was still good to have a look around. We then continued on into the Venetian and commented on why we turned down the opportunity to stay here for $100 a night this time!!!! DOH!!! DOH!!!! Our blind loyalty to the MGM brand of hotels was the main reason but after the relative poor service provided so far into the holiday by the MGM we agreed that maybe next time we will try somewhere else, the Venetian is currently our first choice along with Mandalay and Planet Hollywood. Quite when it will be I do not know.
Leaving the Venetian and getting some great pictures around that area (the best in my opinion) we continued onto Harrahs where we decided to get the monorail back to the MGM. We had walked for ages and we were once again aware of the need to get back to shower and get ready for Mystere. We timed it perfectly again just as a monorail turned up and in minutes we were walking back through the MGM to our room.
After a rest, a shower and change we headed off out again. We thought about having a few beers in the MGM but decided it might be better to see how quickly the monorail turned up and so we decided if we had time we would have the beers at T.I. Anyway, we got down to Harrahs in record time, and after getting a bit lost in the Mirage, we did a first for us and got the monorail from Mirage to T.I. which saved our legs a little and got us into T.I. just before 6pm with the show due to start at 7pm.
Our disappointment with the service provided in some places in Vegas this time was evident again as we sat waiting for ages to be served in the centre bar in T.I. (I can't remember the name). It was changeover at 6pm but our server had informed the new girl that we were waiting but she just procdeed to chew gum and chat with the bartender for 5mins, and having waited 10mins in total we said a collective "sod this" and went off in search of somewhere else. We found Mist, or is it Myst? I'm not sure. Anyway the server here was excellent and again we timed it perfectly with happy hour, so we had 4 draft Bud Lights for $10 + tip. Bargain. This was a nice bar, very much like the West Wing but with more atmosphere. I did laugh on the way out when some Chavs (American Chavs) in tracksuits asked if they could go in or whether there was a dress code in place. The guy on the door indicated, there isn't until 9pm and the proceeded to say they would have to change into something more acceptable if they wanted to still be in there at that point. 6pm to 9pm, now that's 3hours drinking, no way can the Americans drink for that long, they would be under the table. For us Brits it's just the start of the night, but we do like a drink don't we?
Via the toilet (2 beers lightweights) we got to the Mystere theater and found our seats, excellent ones dead centre but up in the balcony. As for the show it was great BUT we both really hated the annoying baby. I know there has to be filler whilst costumes and sets are changed but whilst the baby was funny the first time, come the 30th time it was just embarrasing. The Yanks seemed to like it but then again they sit through 4 hours of Baseball on a regular basis so they are used to monotany!! As I said the show was great and all of the acts were outstanding, it really is the best CDS show if you are looking for acrobatics but I still think I prefer KA just.
For dinner we had thought about going to the Grand Lux Cafe in the Venetian which is owned by the same people as the Cheesecake Factory but in the end we opted for the Cheesecake Factory itself in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. It has become a bit of a ritual to go to any Cheesecake Factory we can across the USA and the great thing about the Vegas outlet is that there is rarely a long wait unlike other cities (Washington DC 90 mins, San Francisco 50mins etc etc). We semi-ran through the Forum Shops to get to the Cheesecake Factory and got slightly concerned when we saw it was the top of the hour and that meant the Gods show was in full swing right next door. We felt if we timed it badly, everybody watching that would just head to the CF afterwards, but with so much choice as to where to eat in Vegas, people headed off elsewhere and we turned up with no queue at all. We were seated within minutes and had a great meal as always, I had Chicken Littles, Mash and Succotash and Kel had Pasta. We also had Cheesecake but I can't remember the name of the one we had. It was recommend to us in Atlanta in March and is our favourite now. All in all, top meal and a bargain $45 to boot!!! Yes it's a chain, but when a chain is this good, you have to eat there.
Feeling very very full and for me slightly ill after a huge meal we walked back to Harrahs and got on the monorail. We arrived back at the MGM and to be honest I was so full I didn't really feel like gambling, but we did have a quick go and had little luck again. We did get one drink this time but I opted for a Diet Coke as beer would have been a bad idea. We quickly got through our gambling money and so decided that after such a good day a relative early night was called for, so we retired to our room still very full but feeling not quite so ill. Damn you Cheesecake Factory!!!

More to follow....

We really enjoy the Cheesecake Factory too and usually share a Steak Diane, but we haven't made it the lat couple of trips as there are so many other places we want to eat.

I'm afraid Mystere did nothing for me. Yes, what they did was good, but there was no wow and it left me cold. I reckon Cirque just isn't my thing and the only other one I've seen is Love which I enjoyed mostly due to the music.

I think in terms of what CDS are all about they do it well, but compared to seeing a show like Wicked in London for example it is a totally different ball game because you are getting the show aspect (i.e. the drama) but also the songs as well.

It's all down to personal taste, and to be honest the prices of all three CDS shows we've seen in Vegas now have probably helped made our decision for us (never paid more than $50 for a ticket) but I would be less keen to pay $100-$150 for a CDS show whether it be Love or O because although they are well done, they are all very similar.

I think a lot of Zumanity's hate comes from extortionate ticket prices when it first came out, but for $50 it is a good show to see and it certainly gives you better value for money than $50 at a slot machine (especially in the tightwad land of MGM).

I agree there is so much choice in Vegas for restaurants but the Cheesecake always deserves a visit. When we went to Atlanta, there were a number of TA forum members confused at just why us Brits like the CF so much, my answer was, come to England, then you will see why!!! Interestingly on our Vegas trip this year, CF was not the biggest portions...that was last Friday but I will tell more about that on the trip report.

Day 5, August 21st 2008

After the exertions of the previous couple of days (including 4 shows) today was always going to be a bit more relaxing. It started with a reasonable lay in until 10.30am which was easily the longest we laid in the whole holiday. Despite eating quite late and in vast quantities last night for some reason I thought it would be a good idea to have another buffet breakfast. We contemplated walking to the Tix4tonite stand to try and get the Paris Buffet for $9.99 but decided to go with the MGM again. Once again the queue was fairly small and we were soon seated, although in a different section to previous visits and away from my favourite Eggs Benedict station. On this occasion the server was very poor (a recurring theme I am afraid in the MGM this time) it took about 15mins to get our first drink and refills were very hard to come by. Still the food was very good again, slightly better we thought than the other day and we had at least three full plates each and left overly stuffed once again. We did notice a number of people who had come in and been seated just prior to the change over to the lunch menu, which clearly was a clever idea but at the same time, I really don't want to be tucking into ribs at 11.30 in the morning!!
We still had enough time to utilise our monorail ticket within the 24hr period and so decided we would shoot down to the Flamingo and over to Caesars Palace, a hotel which is normally high on our priorities but aside from the Forum Shops we had yet to set foot in. Once again we timed the monorail perfectly and arrived at the Flamingo in no time. We had rarely spent any great time in the Flamingo so it was nice to walk through the gardens and see the pool (which was as busy as the MGM's). We had a quick look on the internet and then continued out of the hotel and crossed over to Caesars. I managed to get some good shots of the front of the hotel which I still think looks great despite it being older than a lot of other hotels on the strip, and after nearly baking to death in the heat we headed in for some cool air conditioning and a wander around. It is a lovely hotel, but I was glad I was not in the check in/out queue because it was huge and there were only about 3 people working on the desk. After a while we agreed we had seen enough and headed out via the Pussycat Dolls lounge and slots to the front again. At this point we decided to do another first, get on the free shuttle to the Rio. However, I didn't realise that there was a shuttle to the Rio from Caesars so we ended up walking across to Paris and getting it from there. We timed it perfectly and found the last two seats on board and within minutes we were on our way away from the strip for the first time.
I really liked the Rio, and would consider it as an off strip option on future visits although there isn't really that much to look at apart from the casino (they do have a bowling alley though). The Masquerade in the Sky only kicks in during the evening but I am sure that would be great, as it was, we had to make do with the drinks servers that turn into singers and get up on stage during the day, most of whom were very good. I had been playing some video Blackjack during the previous couple of days for a laugh and was doing my best to see how long $10 could last playing 50c a round. In the Rio I managed to last for well over an hour, and it was only down to being slightly over frivilous that I lost it all in the end by upping the stakes somewhat. As a bonus we also got two drinks each (even Kel who wasn't playing) and was offered a further one which we declined. The MGM could learn something from the Rio. Keep them in drinks, they will play. I always thought that was the whole point of drinks service, but perhaps the MGM is arrogant enough to think that people will just gamble their money away with dry throats?
After a couple of hours at the Rio we headed back to Paris on the shuttle and decided to head back to the MGM for some much needed rest via the Bellagio fountains (awesome as ever). Kel did contemplate the pool, but looking out of the window we could see it was ultra busy again so we just had some downtime in the room, which was actually rather nice.
Now to the evening. The plan was to have a few beers in the MGM bars (the only way to guarantee a drink it seemed) and then get a one way monorail down to Harrahs to go to Toby Keith's Bar and Grill, a restaurant highly recommend for portion size and good old Americana, and then walk back via the night time Bellagio fountains. Well, we sort of did that plan. You know on occasions when you just fancy one more drink and then moving on and you never move, well that was the case tonight. I think our legs were weary, our throats were extremely dry and we just thought some beers and people watching would be a better option. We started in Centrifuge which seemed overly more pretentious then it did last year but our server was nice (not the gorgeous blonde from last year though) and we had a couple of beers which we charged to the room. Just as we were leaving, typically the music started and the bartenders and servers got up on the bar and did their boogie wonderland. We watched for a bit and then moved onto Zuri.
To be honest last year we couldn't get near Zuri each time we tried, it was just way too busy. This time it was much quieter so we picked a nice table and sat down. Unfortunately we not only got a very poor waitress, but also two girls at seperate tables were being rather over zealous with their smoking, which meant we were getting fumed out. It is a strange thing, we used to go to smokey pubs in England every weekend and not really bat an eyelid, but now since the smoking ban, going to Vegas you really do notice it a lot more....I mean does everybody smoke in Vegas, it certainly seems like that. Anyway, we eventually got our drinks, including a glass of Rose for Kel which she was very happy with. I had Bud Light, you know just for a change. We agreed that it wasn't really happening and didn't really want to be smoked on anymore so we headed to Rouge.
Rouge was excellent, easily the best bar in the MGM. Service was first class (at last!) and the atmosphere was top notch. I loved the people watching from the bar, the smiley waitresses and the cold beer. Kel was happy they had Rose also, so we stayed for 1......then 2......then 3.......then 4 rounds and wait for it, actually felt a little tipsy (NEVER!). After our 4th round we had to make a decision, where to eat? Were we even hungry? Not really, but it would be a waste. I voted for Studio Cafe in the MGM, I was shot down in a blaze of glory. Buffet? Breakfast and Dinner, no thanks. Shall we stick with our plan and go to Toby Keith's? Nah, can't be bothered to get the monorail. Just carry on getting drunk? Possibly. In the end we opted for the food court and a glorious McDonald's which although was a major cop out, was about all we needed. Cheap too at $16.
Feeling full but still with the affects of the alcohol we hit the casino. Perhaps if we were already drunk, the drinks service at the slots would be better. Well it was, to a degree, we got 2 again, which topped up 6 previous quite nicely. Kel had a good 500 credit win on a 25c slot with a payout of $125 which was very nice, I was very frivilous and played 75c max credits on my machine right down to one credit and then guess what? It rolled in 3 stars and stripes 7's!!!! On one credit!!!!! Nooooooooooo!!!!! So 80 credits ($20) instead of 240 credits ($60). Still a win was a win, and it proved to be my best of the trip, which was very poor after winning $300 at the Excalibur in 2006 on one spin, and a similar amount at the NYNY in 2004. As I mentioned earlier the slots did seem very very tight, although the guy sitting beside me did hit three 200 credit wins in the space of 5 minutes.
Happy with our nights work and some payout tickets to cash, we took our final beers up to bed still feeling just a little bit merry. It had been a bit of a nothing day, but we'd enjoyed ourselves and that is the whole point of a holiday!!!

More to follow.....

I think you need a bit of a nothing day a couple of times in Vegas. If you are darting about all the time between meals and shows it can get a bit intense.

We found cocktail service to be patchy at the MGM in May. In one section it was non-existant, but we moved and it was OK. The waitress took a while to come back with drinks, but that's to be expected in a place that size.

Day 6, August 22nd 2008

So the surprise extra day had been spoilt in Albuquerque as I mentioned earlier but we were both still looking forward to the Sheryl Crow gig tonight. We were starting to feel weary though which is easily done in Vegas, but added on top of the 8 nights of exploration of the outstanding Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Taos regions of New Mexico it made it harder work. We will never be holiday makers who sit by a pool or on a beach for 8 hours a day, there is far too much to see and do in this world to contemplate that but sometimes I do wish it didn't feel like we needed a holiday to get over a holiday. That comment probably sounds quite arrogant, and I am obviously aware that not everybody can afford to visit the places we have done in the last 10 years on a regular basis but travelling does wear you down over time. I think we were just about ready for home.
Anyway we woke up very late this morning and didn't really get going until nearly lunchtime which had become the norm in Vegas, which is amazing when you consider we were awake at 6am and raring to go on the first full day in Albuquerque!!! We decided to have a brunch at Wichcraft in the MGM, the sandwich outlet of Craftsteak restaurant which is also in the MGM. It wasn't cheap by any means ($28 including drinks) but the two sandwiches we had were outstanding. I had a panini with chicken, peppers and pesto, Kel had turkey and avo. Highly recommend for a lunch and better, although more expensive, then Earl of Sandwich in Planet Hollywood.
Following a bit of a nothing day yesterday today was looking pretty much the same. To be honest we've always split the time up in Vegas with a tour (Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, ATV Tour in the Valley of Fire, hiring a car for Red Rock Canyon) but this time we had spent all 6 days and nights on the strip, and for once, we had run out of things to do. Kel suggested a trip over to Mandalay Bay to visit the Reading Room which is a bookstore that has seats outside where you can get some downtime. It was a good idea and with a Starbucks next door we chilled out nicely for an hour or so. Needing stimulation we then hit the tram from Mandalay back to Excalibur and walked over to NYNY for some more basketball and also another crack at video Blackjack. Again Kel came out on top with the basketball and I once again made $5 this time last an hour or so on Blackjack. Great fun, but unrewarding in terms of comp points. We did get a drink though!!
We had decided to eat before Sheryl Crow and with doors at 6.30pm we knew we had to be on the ball with dinner so we headed back to the MGM for a rest. Kel once again contemplated the pool but she decided it just wasn't worth the hassle and it turned out that our only visit to the pool area was on the Sunday our first day. It did a good job of putting us off, and was perhaps the sole reason for us feeling quite weary at this point as we had intended to chill(!) much more in Vegas. We can put up with crowds, but for me the cleanliness certainly on that Sunday was very disappointing. Maybe we should have given it another go in midweek, it would probably have been a better experience but there you go.
After a shower and change we bought one way monorail tickets and headed down to Harrahs for dinner at Toby Keith's Bar and Grill. This meal was a delight, our server was excellent (Davina) and she kept us topped up nicely with refills. The food was standard American but very very good. I had the burger which was huge, and Kel went for the Catfish Sandwich which was also very large. Both plates came piled with more fries than you get in three visits to the Hard Rock Cafe!!! To be honest we are not country music fans at all (despite having been to both Memphis and Nashville) but it is listenable most of the time, and the restaurant and adjoining bar had a very good atmosphere for what was reasonably early in the evening. There is live music most nights from 9pm I believe. Well worth a visit and very cheap, oh and we had the Cookie Brownie dessert shared for just $4.99. Amazing value.
After visiting the Toby Keith shop and grabbing a few pictures we set off on foot to Planet Hollywood for the Sheryl Crow gig. We had intended to use some of the Planet Hollywood vouchers we had got with the A List Players Card but after such a heavy meal we decided against it and went straight for the Theatre of Performing Arts where the gig was taking place. With the first act about to finish it was perfect timing and we sat down and waited for James Blunt to come on. Now I'm no fan of Mr Blunt, the perception that he is overly arrogant is probably true but he did put on an excellent show and really got the theater buzzing. Hats off to him. I wouldn't rush out and buy his albums, but he was 10 times better than I expected.
Sheryl Crow on the other hand took a while to get going, and it was only mid-set that it really picked up with the hits being picked off one by one. She did put on a good show, and it does surprise you just how many of her songs you have forgotten but the real bummer for me was not being quite close enough to get a good look at her. I mean she is a stunner in my eyes, very pretty and she was looking very hot from where I was sitting!!! Talking of hot, the temperature in the theatre was unbearable in my mind, where was the airconditioning when you needed it, it's everywhere else in Vegas after all. It made for a fairly uncomfortable 3 hours, but all in all it was a great show by both Blunt and Crow and we left very impressed by both.
After the show it was a warm walk back to the MGM for one final gamble and then off to bed. Once again we didn't have any major luck on the slots but we had got used to that by now. The big win was going to have to wait until next time. On return to our room I thought it was worth a call to see if we could extend our check out time by an hour for the next day from eleven to one pm, but they were unable to say at this point and asked me to call back from 8am in the morning. Fair enough, we switched the light out on our final full day in Vegas humming Sheryl Crow songs.

Departure Day, August 23rd 2008

How annoying, I had an awful nights sleep with a majorly bad sore throat, but at least it meant I was awake at 8am to call the MGM reservations to ask about the extension to our check out. The answer was no. I appreciate it was a Saturday, but I really didn't believe the guy when he said the entire hotel was sold out for that night. Ah well, we had a leisurely shower, change and then packed our bags and wandered down to checkout at dead on 11am. Kel went off to dump the bags with the bell hop whilst I checked out. As I had checked the TV screen I realised our West Wing drinks had not been taken off, so I requested this and the front desk were happy to oblige. She asked if everything was to our satisfaction and I answered yes. In all honesty in a hotel this size you will always have a few problems, but they were pretty minor overall. I mean no blocked toilets, no sprinklers going off in the night, no things going missing, so all in all, yes I was happy. What made me even happier was that I had winnings which part paid half for our stay, so not a bad return after all.
Kel was still waiting to check in our bags at the bell hop when I finished at the front desk but the queue soon went down and we were baggage free and had a couple of hours to kill prior to getting the taxi to the airport. We knew we had to go to the Players Card desk as we had gained enough for some free slot play, but when we went by the queue was horrendous so we opted to eat first and hoped it would be quieter on our return. As we didn't want to venture too far we both agreed that the Studio Cafe would be a good choice and it was. The server Alain from the Lebanon of all places was excellent, I had Philly Cheesesteak and fries, and Kel had a Turkey Sandwich also with fries plus the usual drinks. It reminded me of our first meal in Vegas last year when we went to the Studio Cafe all tired from the flying, I had the Cheesesteak as well then. Awesome, if slightly pricey.
After being fed we returned to the Players Card desk to find the queues had gone, we were next in line. We went up and were greeted by a lovely guy on the desk who checked our account and informed us we had gained enough points for.........2 FREE BUFFETS!!!!! DOH!!!! We explained we had already checked out and had just eaten and wouldn't be able to use the buffet vouchers. To his credit he got on the phone and explained what had happened and they agreed to give us $47 in comps, which certainly helped towards paying some of our bar bills. He mentioned to always charge things to your room as it is easier to give comps against drinks and meals then straight off the accommodation. Good tip for next time. Thanking him for his efforts we went back to the lobby, picked up our bags and then hopped in a taxi for our first flight of the day, Vegas to Houston. It now sunk in that not only was our holiday over, but we also had 13 hours of flying and 2 hours connection time to deal with prior to getting back to Heathrow, and then a 2-3hour drive back to Norwich. I think at this point we agreed we hate flying, but we have done so many flights in the past few years what with our round the world trip and standard holidays.
Arrived at McCarran to just have one more display of total incompetence by a check in agent and it was goodbye to Vegas once again. The flight to Houston was 3 hours and went quite quickly, but it was nice to have the connection time at Houston in the end to stretch our legs etc before the big one back to England. Flight time Houston to Heathrow was just over 9hr which was far shorter than we expected so we boarded quite happy.
We arrived back into Heathrow at 2pm on Sunday, got through immigration quickly, bags were nearly first off and then caught the train from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1 for our Hoppa Bus back to the Crowne Plaza. It all went very smoothly and we were home in Norwich at about 5.30pm.....just in time to shower and head out to to Mum's birthday BBQ!!!! It kept us awake which was very helpful and it was nice to see the family all together again.

And that's about it for the trip report!!!!!

To sum up:-

In hindsight I think we both agree that it might have been better to have done Vegas first and then headed to New Mexico, because although we were very busy in NM, we certainly had more downtime in the evenings and it would have made it not quite so tiring. For me, that will be our final visit to Las Vegas for sometime. It's a great city, but having been 5 times now in 6 years it has become just a little too familiar, pretty much the same thing happened with Orlando as well. The construction is quite horrendous also, and although it doesn't impinge on anything you do, it just looks awful. I would love to return when the City Center development is complete and maybe a few other things have happened so it gives fresh impetus especially for daytime, because as great as the hotels and casinos are, when you've visited a few times, they just don't have the same wow factor as the first time you set foot in them.
For me also I doubt we will return to the MGM Grand. I moaned at another poster on a different forum for saying just that after a great experience and then a bad experience, but there are so many other options in the city and will likely be even more when we do return again. I felt the MGM Grand let themselves down badly on service levels this time (missed housekeeping, drinks service in the casino, service in restaurants/bars) and the experience was certainly at a much lower level than last September when it was first class. I still love the hotel and I especially liked the Grand Tower Room, but for me it will be somewhere different next time.
There is just so much other stuff to see in the world, visiting New Mexico opened our eyes to the potential of "off the tourism radar" states in the USA alone, but despite all our travelling in the last 10 years which included 9 months in 2006, there is so much closer to home we still need to do. Italy looks a good option for next year.
Vegas is Vegas, and despite George Clooney incorrectly stating it is America's Playground in Oceans 11 (that is Atlantic City) it remains a city so vibrant and different from anywhere else in the USA. I still remember the day we arrived at the Luxor back in 2002 and had never come across anything quite like that before, it was an amazing experience. It is still amazing to a lot of people, and I guess it still is for us as well, but the wow factor has diminished over time. Is it a Vegas thing, or is it a USA thing? Is it just a travelling thing? I'm not sure at this moment.

One thing I do know is that we will be back one day. That Triple Stars slot machine will pay out big I'm sure of that!!!!

I hope you have enjoyed the trip reports. Enjoy your holidays!!

Many thanks for the trip reports. I really enjoyed travelling all over Vegas with you.

Thanks Ju, always enjoy reading Vegas trip reports :cheers

Interesting how you feel about Vegas - when we left 2 years ago we both said as the plane took off from McCarran that we had had enough of Vegas for a while and didn't want to come back for a couple of years. Three months later, we both said how we wanted to go back the following year again! This year is my 10th or 11th visit and I still look forward to it incredibly.
It has a unique buzz that I haven't experienced anywhere else. We're lucky in that we tend to go to the Far East early in the year and then Vegas around September time and barring financial issues I can't see that changing.
It will be interesting to see if you still feel the same in a few months time :think :D

Cheers,

TC
