jph77, like Colleen I have also stayed at the Somy (you no doubt have read my review)! Like colleen says, it is a nice friendly hotel. Large clean pool, we had a fairly large room (bedroom cum lounge) with en suite bathroom and a small kitchen area (only a fridge/mini bar). A little bit basic but a lot better than some basic hotels we have stayed in over there. It was very clean. No TV provided so we hired one via the reception (as we like to keep up with the news of a morning), not sure if it was worth it really as the picture was pretty bad most of the time. You wouldn't know it was a hotel as it looks like a row of flats on it's own roadway and the pool/bar/restaurant area is behind some hedges over to the right) We had a room on the back of the block (down the bottom end) which overlooked an area that appears to be used as a cut through by the locals, a few trees and one or two houses, I wasn't too keen on this to start with but we stayed put and were quite happy. Often saw squirrels playing in the trees which was entertaining. It wasn't a rowdy place with late night drinkers so that was a plus although we probably wouldn't have heard anyone from our room anyway. There is a small tailors shop there (we didn't use it so can't say if its good or not) and there is a beauty salon too which again I didn't use. (as I am already beautiful) Only small criticism is that service was rather slow at breakfast but maybe things will have improved this season. There is a nice little chinese place outside the hotel entrance which we used a few times, food not bad and staff very friendly. ALSO, most importantly, the Somy is more or less over the road from "whynot prayjot" (I think its called) where the North Goa meets may (or will be) taking place, so you shouldn't have any trouble meeting up with a few people from HT. Book it up and have a great time. ........Fizzy
A bit and as Colleen says, there's an awful lot of "cheap coffee" on offer over there........specially the cocktail flavoured variety
Just booked it!
fizzy2 I think we must have been in the same block as you because we used to watch them all cut across the land ..and we saw squirrels playing in the trees too
I'm sure I'll have plenty of questions!
A few tips.......get a taxi from the airport so you arrive at the hotel before the rest, you will then have time to change rooms if you are not happy with what is offered. Tell the rep that you are going to the resort by taxi or you will hold everyone on the bus up. If you need an extra mattress (as they can be very hard) or pillows then do ask at reception, i am sure they will oblige.....if not, tip the room boy, he will do his utmost for you as long as you look after him. Another tip (for which I shall probably get shot down in flames for) don't get too sucked in by those who beg as for many it is a career. Children walking tall is a good local charity to help should you so wish (pm poipleshadow who is an HT member.......he runs it). Don't tell taxi drivers its your first visit as they will rip you off, do get chatting with tourists who have been a few times as they will be a great source of info and guidance about prices etc., Take a torch with you at night as street lighting (and electrical system generally) is poor, particularly down side roads. Buy your toiletries over there, cheap enough and you save yourself a good couple of kilos in your suitcase. I have gone so will leave it here...all this info and more besides is on HT and if you can't find it...just ask
Thanks for the tips!
Sounds like it was the same block colleen. I wasn't too happy with the outlook to begin with but it turned out fine and I quite enjoyed sitting on the balcony watching people passing through. We also got chatting to the kids who were sorting out the rubbish and would throw sweets down to them. We saw lots of those little chipmunk type squirrels also cockrels/chickens. I thought it was nice and peaceful up there, somewhere fairly shaded to relax and read for a while. I would definitely go there again as long as the standards didn't go down. I think it was FTV who recommended it to me, (not sure without looking at the reviews and my pm's again) and he was spot on in my opinion. I thought the place was a little gem for what we paid ........and YOU got an even BETTER deal.....jammy devil, more money left for you to spend on coffee Fizzy x
No probs jph77....When do you go?

Smashing place, would recommend it to anyone, great location
Fizzy, we go on 29th December for two weeks! Can't wait to be honest!
And here's the man himself FTV as you know we were very pleased with the Somy - a great recommendation from yourself. Thank you. Fizz
Can anyone tell me exactly where Somy resort is please. I thionk it is somewhere near the Nizmar but not sure
we are going to the Somy on the 28th Dec and apparently it is opposite the Nizmar by the Thomas cook office and the Lacoste shop, but as I don't really know Calangute, I am none the wiser
I have just been looking for hols in Jan and that came up. The reports on here aren't too bad
Head from Calangute roundabout towards Candolim there is a big place on the left called Midas Touch, it is next to that, or opposite the sportsmans bar about 400 yards before the church in the middle of the road, hope that helps slightly good location and great place to stay.
Oh I know where it is, we walked down that road going to Souymans kitchen when we got past the church we got in a taxi as they said it was far and it was only about five minutes further down. Is that the same main rd the Osborne is off
