If the 19th June to 13th September is 90 days or less, then the 1 visa will cover both trips.
For your August holiday, passport control will look in your passport and see the stamp from 19th June.
You must make sure visa does not run out part way through the second holiday as there are huge fines to pay.............

Yes you are right £10 payable before clearing customs - they generally point you inthe direction of the kiosk selling the visa which comprise a stamp which lasts for 90 days

I am going to Turkey on holiday in June, and have only just come across the fact I need a Visa (yes I am stupid lol!).

We are going to a hotel in Atalya.

So what is the actual process? Do we need to do anything advance? Take anything with us? Prepare anything?

Or do we just turn up like we would for any other holiday???

No, you don't have to prepare anything, you just need to have £10 each person ready (must be sterling), when you enter the terminal building, just follow the crowd to pay for your Visa, and get your passport stamped, then go through passport control.

We travelled to Marmaris through Dalaman airport (the old military one) about 10 years ago, no mention was made by anyone in the travel agents about the £10 you had to put in each passport when you showed your passport that was called a "visa"

My mates are going there this year but now will be landing in the New Dalaman Internationl airport and wondered if this odd practice still goes on ?

Thanks

It's not an odd practice, it's the payment for an official visa which UK citizens have to obtain before entry to Turkey. Most people either put the £10 note inside their passport or just hand it over separately with the passport on entry.

There wasn't any mention of it happening by the travel agents before we went, none of the documentation said anything about it (fortunately we were told a few days before we left by some friends), we didn't get any form to fill in about it, it was a payment made in one country where they stipulated you had to pay in another countries currency and we didn't get a receipt for it... I'd say thats not a normal transaction where millions of pounds must be changing hands! :que

This is a normal transaction and UK citizens have needed to obtain a visa to enter Turkey for a number of years.

Most Countrys prefer hard currencys such as Sterling or Dollars for their visas, it's better for their economys in terms of purchasing powers, its the same in Egypt, Dominican Republic, Kenya etc etc etc

There is nothing dodgy about it.
Perhaps you had a rubbish travel agent or didnt read the back of your brochure properly ???

A stamp should be stuck in your passport which is a receipt for the £10 and gives the visa 3months validity.

Maybe they just forgot to mention it (mistakes happen, they also forgot to mention that when we landed it would be a military airport and expect camoflauge and guns everywhere !... came as a bit of a shock! At least that has gone now....) but I still stand by it seeming odd ! (we went with one of the main companies, can't remember which)

If you go to other countries isn't there a form to fill in stating reasons for visit, where you will be, when you will be leaving etc and some sort of receipt for taking your money ?

Maybe the practice is prefectly correct but with all the problems of travel meaning you've got to strip to the waist and can't carry this that and the other when going through airports it just seems odd that one of the processes doesn't seem to be documented and signed for etc...

If you are really that bothered about it why dont you just go on to the Turkish Embassy web-site and apply before you go ?

Although most people on HT would just hand over their £10 per person on arrival

I'm not that bothered about it, it was 10 years ago... even I can let it lie after that long....LOL

I was just quantifying why I said "odd" thats all...

Ah I see obviously wasting my time here trying to be helpful !

No far from it ! You have been very helpful in putting my mind at rest that it was all legit and above board and I can advise my mate that he will still need the £10 !

Thanks

Going back a few years Steve I think there probably was a feeling of something being a little odd about handing over your crisp tenner tucked inside your passport and not having a clue where it was going . My nephew and his wife who is turkish certainly used to joke about it . Whilst they love them dearly they always did and still do call the turks "Dodgy" so thats probably where those feelings stem from .

Still dont know where our millions of £10 notes go .Could be straight to the local casino for all I know but we have to assume its ligitimate :)

If you get one from the turkish embassy before you go the cost is around £70, so £10 at the border is cheap.

sorry either I am reading your comments wrong or I dont get it..are you referring to what is done with the visa money as collected at the borders .1. there are no casinos in turkey 2. ( this is a guess ) but I would imagine that this visa money goes first to the The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then is most likey (maybe) distrubuted to the REPUBLIC OF TURKEY MINISTRY OF CULTURE AND TOURISM

http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-fees-at-border-gates-for-2008.en.mfa

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Turkish: Dışişleri Bakanlığı) is a government ministry office of the Republic of Turkey, responsible for foreign affairs in Turkey.

(Turkish: Kültür ve Turizm Bakanlığı) is a government ministry office of the Republic of Turkey, responsible for culture and tourism affairs in Turkey.

does not every country in the world pretty much have visa or visa controls to get into another country....with some countries being exempt from paying out visas ?? and I would imagine that those fees collected would be in support of goverment projects ( highways, roads, etc etc etc )

how much is a visa for a turkish citizen to the UK ?? The UK government asks for £65 from a citizen of Turkey to visit the United Kingdom as tourist.

considering the amount the turks have to pay , I think its very reasonable. So now, who is making money?
