I use the interbank SWIFT transfer service, and the cost of sending money is much less than you quote. I've paid £7.50 for a large sum between HSBC in the UK and my bank in France and today 4.08€ for transferring a sum from my bank account to my tour operator for my holiday later this year in Iceland.

Hi Sfx

You could give Alpha bank in London a call and maybe even open up an account with them if you can get to one of the London branches.

I'm not too clued up on foreign banks and international transfers but maybe She had the wrong type of account that incurred a penalty for international transfers ie due to manual intervention. Is it IBAN or something that allows for the easy international transfer of money.

See if you can locate or find out what bank you will be using in Greece and give us an update..
Maybe someone will be able to give better first hand advice.. :tup

IBAN is an international banking number, which is a unique identifier of any particular bank all over the world if the bank concerned uses the SWIFT transfer service. The name Swift may vary in the local language, so it might be worth asking a bank in that country what they name the service that uses their IBAN number.
