Going by official rules, what is the ruling on young children age 2/3 having their own hand luggage if they can't carry it or lift it onto the belt at security. Someone on a parenting website I go on has started a thread asking about 0ver 2's and luggage allowance. One parent has replied saying that at security, she was told that her almost 4 year old didn't have any allowance and nearly didn't get his bag through security. Common sense is saying that she was unfortunate and that a child of 2/3 shouldn't be expected to lift their hand luggage onto the belt.

Hand and hold luggage allowances for children vary according to airline. With those airlines which do provide a luggage allowance, I have never heard any of them say that the child has to be physically capable of carrying that luggage or lifting it on or off the conveyor belt.

Security staff usually handle screening for all airlines operating out of an airport and are perhaps unlikely to be aware of luggage allowances for individual airlines. However, I would think it unlikely that security officials would expect a 4 year old to carry or lift baggage on to a conveyor belt.

Thanks David, knew you'd have the answer, the issue was that security told the mum that almost 4 year old wasn't allowed to have their own hand luggage. I thought that most if not all airlines did allow child 2 or more to have their own piece of hand luggage.

Beermat, you can take your own sandwiches through security. I didn't have any bother with rolls that had Marmite and Philladelphia type cheese in them. A jar of Marmite or tub of Philladelphia type cheese wouldn't be allowed though.

Hi flying easyjet in September from Manchester, are you allowed bags from duty free as well as your hand luggage, thanks inadvance for any help.

marralass,

Refer to SarahAdlington 's reply when you posted on the Easyjet thread. Strictly speaking, it's one piece of hand luggage only. It depends how strict they are being on the day. You'll find more details on Easyjet's website.

Hi all. Me and my friend are going to book a flight to Majorca with either BMI or Jet2. We are thinking we might just take hand luggage (10 kgs) because of the exhorbitant cost of putting cases in the hold (we are only going for 4 days). If you opt for the hand luggage price can you take a handbag as well?? Would phone BMI to check but the price of a phone call (65p per minute) is akin to the price of putting luggage in the hold :yikes

Not sure about the companies you mention but the rule regarding 1 piece of hand luggage also relates to airport security and their checks as you go through the airport screening checks.

If you have a trolley case (ie hand luggage), carrying a handbag, a bag of sweets and a sandwich you will be asked by security to place the everything in the case and if it doesn't fit you have a problem !

Remember hand luggage can have size limitations as well as weight limits.

Trust this helps.

Chris

PS for peace of mind why not share a 'hold' case to halve the cost and to make it worth the expense bring back some booze in the hold case !!! ( of course not going over the weight limits).

pargaluvva,

You Can Take One ItemOf Hand Baggage, So You Have To Be Able To Fit Everything You Want Into One Bag (That's Within The Size Limits). That Means You Can Take Your Handbag ONLY If It Fits Into The Other Bag You Are Taking

Thanks for your replies. We were thinking of hand luggage only to make a quicker exit from the airport (as well as saving some money :rofl ). This year we waited about 45 mins for our cases. Might have to have a rethink. We did think about one case in the hold and one hand luggage; think that might be the best idea.

Went through Gatwick Airport this afternoon with a handbag and a small wheeled trolley and no one told me to place the bag inside the trolley. Many others were doing the same. It was only when I reached the Easyjet gate that I had to put my handbag inside the case.

And there lies the problem for travellers !!

Some airlines and airports allow just one piece of hand luggage, whilst others may allow two. In your case Judith, you were travelling through an airport which allows two pieces of hand luggage, but flying with an airline which only allows one piece on board.

Fortunately it did not cause you any problems, but you could potentially fly out of the UK from an airport and with an airline which allows two pieces of hand luggage, but return from an overseas airport which only allows one. You would have to comply with that airport's restrictions, and it may not always be easy or possible to fit two pieces of hand luggage into one.

Some airlines are more strict on the one item rule than others, stiplulating that any airside or duty free shopping must also fit into the single piece of hand luggage which is allowed.

This is why it so important to check the hand luggage restrictions applicable not just to your airline, but also to each airport that you are travelling through.

This is why I am confused. We travelled to Greece a few weeks ago and our cases went in the hold but I also took a flight bag plus my handbag with a few bits and pieces in with no problem. I am just wondering if BMI (who we will most likely fly with) might be a bit strict if you are just booking 'hand luggage'. Reluctant to phone cos it's 65p per minute and cannot contact them by email; that's probably why most people just opt to put their luggage in the hold and cough up £30 for the privilige :) .
