Whilst reading this my OH has gone through a list of the shacks we have used over the years and EVERY one of them owns more than the property they live in, infact quite a few of them own a few apartments they rent out, not one.
Not that people should not make money out of a business but they are not as poor as some of them make out. One shack owner, who shall remain nameless, does not give his shack boys the proper share out of the tips but gives them all a set amount (not anything like the money in the tip box) and always has done.

I can't speak about other shack owners but the family we know work extremely hard all year round. As I said previously they are also fishermen and the women of the family are at the market everyday selling the fish. This continues during the tourist season as well. So most nights they are out in the boat, come back at dawn, have a couple of hours sleep and then work all day in the shack. Not exactly an easy way of life in my opinion!

Do they go out fishing at night through the monsoon? Or during the day? This being the whole of June, July, August and September?

Why? Name and shame I say.

It may be informative to name and shame, but it could prove a killer for HT if we become embroiled in a slander or libel case.

Shack allotment forms had to be in to-day for the meeting on the 29th. Perhaps shacks will be up now by the middle of
November, although they have all been told that they will have to be smaller!!! (well for five minutes)

Johnny5, I am quite well aware of when the monsoon is!!! They go out when the fish are there, who knows, could be day or night. Yesterday they went in the afternoon and got 7 baskets of catfish.
I never realised you were interested in fishing but if you want I can arrange for you to go out with them for an overnight,12 hour trip, for kingfish. How are your sea legs??

Twm - wouldn't hold my breath for that date either. Think we may hear something more on this subject as the 2 shack associations are not in agreement with each other and one of them has said they will go on indefinite hunger strike.

Squigs: They must have had a hard time of it this year in July....also there's not many i know that survive on a couple of hours sleep a day! :)

Hi Spaldy, like I said to Johnny5, you are more than welcome to come out on a few fishing trips and spend a day with us at the shack and see how it all works. My treat!! If you are interested let me know, I will be there next week.

Can't help but notice that no-one has mentioned, the number of foreign people with seasonal business in Goa, who do very well out of the Tourists, during the season.

Lassigirl.

Not going to get into the current handbag throwing session that is in danger of hi-jacking this thread but there are a lot of foreign (British ex pat businesses) based in Goa and maybe doing O.K. out of tourists. My only comment would be that a lot of them are probably supplementing their income with U.K. based investments. i.e pensions savings etc.

I have no problem with that no more than a shack owner making enough in a season to buy some property to rent out to tourists. Is he supposed to work for nothing?

Business is business the world over and the truth is simple. The good ones who provide a good product for their customer will do well and I for one can only take my hat off for all the hard work that makes that happen.

The internet has ensured the good survive and the bad struggle and I for one cannot wait to report my experiences in November.

Long live this forum.

How can this happen year after year, they are a massive part of the reason people go or return to Goa. It's impossible thet the Goverment and tourist board are not aware of how important they are to their product. One is left with the suspicion that somewhere in the background is the Goan Hoteliers, who over the years have been dead set against the shacks, and regard the monies spent there, rightfully belonging to them. I can think of no other reason (apart from the usual bribes etc) for this annual cock up.
