Weather will be warm but not hot.
I've been in March/April, and in Dec/Jan, in the latter the warm part of the day is short, evenings get cold quickly.
Hi, thank you for your response. apart from Hammamet what other resort would you recommend? Jazz
I'm a devotee of Sousse and have been going there for the past ten years. It has changed quite a bit in that time though. One advantage of Sousse is that you have train, metro and bus stations so it is easy to get around. The beaches are good, though that is the case throughout Tunisia. Many people prefer Port el Kantaoui which is a more modern, purpose built resort, with a lovely Marina and boats from all over Europe, many of which over-winter there. Sousse is basically a working town, so though you have some very nice hotels and the sort of amenities tourists expect, you will also see the locals going about their daily business. March can be lovely but recently I have been leaving it until towards the end of April when it is usually a little warmer, and again in late September/early October. You will find the reps at most of the hotels organise trips to places such as Carthage, which is very interesting. Sidi Bou Said is another place well worth a visit as it is enchanting, though the roads can be quite steep. If you have time a two or three day trip into the desert is a must, as you will see the cave houses at Matmata amongst other things. There is information on all of these on HT so have a look round. Don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have as I'm sure someone will be able to point you in the right direction.
Sousse as aslemma says is a working town with a fascinating Medina while PEK is much more of a tourist resort although it is not like Spain etc (thankfully) and is very pleasent with easy access to Sousse for your rail or Louage connections to Tunis, Sidi Bou Said and Carthage which is just down the hill from Sidi Bou Said.
We are just back and went up to Tunis, Sidi Bou Said and Carthage and I would say that if you are able you should visit them for a day or two.
I will go back again soon as I want to visit Matmata and go to a Berber village, I am starting to see why Kevin loves Tunisia so much and his 'off the beaten track' trips must be a great experiance.
Again the one thing that stands out to me is the welcome of the Tunisian people, most of them are so nice and genuinely friendly.
How soon Graham? End of April/early May would be good - meet you and Mrs Kiltman by the musical fountain.

I would love that aslemma ............ but we are going to Malta in March, then no more holidays until October when we are off to the Maldives.
last time Tunisia 26 years ago!! changed much??
In reply to the original question, I did comment to Mrs Kiltie when we were there that it is obvious that Tunisia is very much an up and coming holiday destination by the amount of building work going on so I am sure you would notice a big change jazz.
Hi, thank you for all you valuable comments. I have driven my family mad with "wondering where to go." We needed a well earned break and i have to take some holiday before April from work otherwise i would lose it. i was trying to find somewhere warm, and the only places for this time of year was, Tunisia, Canaries or Eqypt. i am not the Canaries type of person and nor Sharm (Luxor is excellent). So i have now decided on Tunisia. as said before i went to Tunisia 26 years ago for my honeymoon and it was a real culture shock and at 20 didn't really appreciate what the country had to offer. After trawling the travel agents today, have made the decision of Sousse. Thanks again, Jazz
So pleased you have made the decision. What hotel have you decided on? I'm sure you will have a lovely time and do hope the weather is nice. It is rather too hot for me in the middle of summer, so I try to stick to spring and autumn.
Hi, we have decided on Marhaba Salem Hotel. the reviews all look good. We would like to go to carthage for a trip. When we went to Luxor i booked all our trips with a local travel agent, is there such a thing in Sousse? i don't like being ripped off by the travel companies. Where else is there to go to in Tunisia for a bit of culture!! xx

Metro, train and bus stations are all down nearthe medina in Sousse and fares are as cheap as chips. If you can find another couple who would share the cost you might consider hiring a taxi and driver for the day, which would give you flexibility. Do visit Monastir itself as it is not far and has the beautiful mausoleum of the previous President which is covered in gold leaf, as well as a different 'vibe' to Sousse and PEK. If you make it to Carthage the exquisite blue and white town of Sidi Bou Said is in the same area. Port El Kantaoui is just down the road from Sousse and you can while away many a pleasant hour there, sitting by the marina and people-watching or sitting in a café by the musical fountain in the evening. The Bardot Museum near Tunis is fantastic. Don't forget to explore the Medina in Sousse - 'la shokran' means 'no thank you' and 'ma andee faloos' means 'I've got no money' - useful phrases when dealing with the shop-keepers.
I hope this has given you a few ideas but no doubt others will also have suggestions.
You might like to try Saphir Voyages - 00 216 72 240168. I went on a 2 day Sahara trip with them a couple of years ago, booking on the phone when I was in Sousse and they were very good, picking me up from the hotel and returning me there - make sure you specify you want an English speaking trip. I don't know what other trips they do but it may be worth asking them. There are quite a few things you can do on your own, either by train, bus or louage - link to train timetable here: Metro, train and bus stations are all down nearthe medina in Sousse and fares are as cheap as chips. Ah thank you. I must look up some of the phrases. So much better if you can say something even if it is only please and thank you. i must start trawling HT now for tips etc jazz x
There are quite a few useful phrases on HT, put there by some of us regulars, but I'm not sure where to find them just now. However, 'please' is 'min fahdlek' and 'thank you' is 'shokran' 'la' is 'no'. 'naam' is 'yes' and 'marhaba' is 'welcome', 'imshi' is 'go away' and 'metta keesh maiya' is 'stop bothering me'. If you get pestered too much add a few of these together, i.e. 'metta keesh maiya min fahdlek - imshi!!!" - I can assure you it works a treat!!
You're an angel Graham. Quite a few people ask about useful phrases and I can never track it down to give a link! Just over two months now and I'll be back there.
