I suppose we are quite lucky having the choice of so many london airports + the Eurostar that is a breeze for us in 25 minutes to Ebbsfleet . Stansted is our nearest at a very easy 30 min jaunt up the M11 . Next is gatwick at around 1 hour if there is no traffic but we are talking M25 so that can easily go Belly up . Then we have Luton. Never flown from there but probably not much further than gatwick. Even heathrow but as we dont really do transatlantic flights that option is never available and in actual fact is the worst possible point on the M25 to get to from here .
I suppose the furthest we would go at a push if the deal was good would be Birmingham . At a guess 2.5 hours maybe but not for a weekend break . Would Birmingham not be a good option for you Helen ??
Still a good 3 1/2 hours from us Lyn - more if there was traffic.
Birmingham or East Midlands for us, 45 mins to Brum or just over an hour to East Mids. Unfortunately we don't do silly o,clock flights so it has to be Manchester airport this summer. Love Manchester airport but they take so damn long to get the luggage off on your return.
We usually fly from Glasgow which is a 4 hour drive for us. We stay in an hotel the night before we fly if it's a morning flight or evening flight on the way back. Have flown from Edinburgh in the past but that is also 4 hours away. We only flew from there because we were late in booking and the only Glasgow flights left to our destination were at stupid o'clock and I won't do that. Edinburgh doesn't have the same choice as Glasgow. Our local airports are Inverness and Aberdeen but choice is very limited even more so since the demise of Flyglobespan The drive there is great cos we're going on holiday the drive back is depressing. Last year it was awful driving back after landing at Glasgow at 5.30am from Orlando but if we want to holiday we have to do it. We now see it as part of our holiday/
We live in Nottingham so East Mids & Birmingham are nice and close. We often end up picking more unusual destinations though so end up having to go from Manchester, Heathrow or Gatwick. Gatwick is the only one I don't like going to - it always feels like it takes hours from here, even if there's no traffic!
We are quite lucky living in London, Gatwick is about 45 minutes with no traffic hold ups and Heathrow about the same. Stanstead would probably be 1½ hours and Luton similar, although I wouldn't choose to go from there as we would eithe have to drive right through or right around London.
We have tried Park and Stay at Holiday Inn Express at Glasgow the night before we flew but on our return the car was damaged ( one week on the road) and neither the Hotel or the Parking the hotel took it to accepted any responsibility. So £200 added to the cost of our holiday. Have tried local taxi, £130 Return and although the return flight was on time, had to listen to the driver moaning all the way abouut the number of local hires he had missed .
Last holiday, we were originally supposed to check in at 4.00a.m and as OH isn't too good early in the morning we had booked the Holiday Inn at Glasgow and a taxi to get us there. The Globespan flights were cancelled but we were lucky enough to re-book with Easyjet for the same dates. Although the Easyjet flights were later than the cancelled Globespan we decided to go with our booking for the overnight at Holiday Inn. Just as well, with the weather conditions the journey to the Airport took 4 hours
.THe taxi driver didn't complain once so got a very good tip even though the fare had been agreed in advance
We travel to Turkey a few times a year and I spend hours on Skyscanner to work out the cheapest flights from any UK airport. Our next trips are from Gatwick, East Midlands and Manchester. For the right price, I'd consider flying from most airports, possibly with the exceptions of Exeter (4 hours) Newcastle (??) and of course the Scottish airports.
Odd how some will only fly from their local airport and others will travel for hours to get the lower air fares!
Odd how some will only fly from their local airport and others will travel for hours to get the lower air fares!
but by the time you add up the cost of the petrol to get you there and airport parking wouldn't that knock up the cost, so in effect you're not saving a lot
I thought it was bad enough for us only having the choice of 2 airports within 2 1/4 hrs but at least hubby drives so means we haven't got to rely on public transport being suitable or the expense of taxis.
Sometimes it's definitely worth the driving but i'd love to be able to fly from Luton every time ... will just have to wait for my lottery win
We have Newcastle which is 12 mile away, Durham Tees valley which is about 40 miles away so ahve a good choice of destinations. We ahve used Manchester in the past before Newcastle started flying to the carribean.
I did Gatwick once as it was a late deal and it was a nightmare journey, drove down to Luton and left the car at a mates house, then the train down to Gatwick... never, ever, again
For us living in the lake district, blackpool airport is a great option if we're doing d.i.y, only three quarters of an hour away ( though limited options for destinations sometimes ) for long haul packages its manchester, though I love flying first thing, which means setting off at daft o'clock, but we can do it in an hour and a quarter.
We always travel fron Manchester, went there today it took us 38 minutes
It takes us about 10 minutes to drive to our local airport,no parking charges because hubby works there,so we fly from there as often as we can,Stansted is only about 90 minutes away and we have found a really cheap parking deal where you can park the car yourself and keep the keys,so we are trying it in September, hope its as good as it sounds.PM for details if you are interested.T.
We have little choice from Aberdeen, and not the destinations I want to go, so we always have to travel to another airport. Sometimes go from Edinburgh, which for us is about the same as going from Glasgow, and have flown to Luton and picked up a flight from there before. It's all a hassle though!
Bristol 40 miles
Living on an island, it means a flight to Glasgow or Edinburgh, or a ferry trip and drive taking approx. 7 hrs.
Glasgow airport is on my doorstep but as im going to Alcudia with hubby, my mum, stepdad and wee brothers at beg of July it was a lot cheaper to fly from manchester saving us nearly £1000 because its the school holidays in scotland when we go. As much as its good having an airport on your doorstep I am really excited about flying from Manchester as we have an early morning flight need too check in between 3am and 4am we are going down the day before and staying at premier inn which with parking for 2 cars cost £160 so still saving money. I feel this is going to be more exciting cause we are having to travel and we are leaving about lunchtime the day before and when get to manchester book into hotel then go for something to eat and then early to bed seen as up early is part of the fun xx
I live next door to Doncaster airport, we couldn't get any closer - hubby drops us off with the cases, drives home then walks back to the airport
