hi we are going on the 8th jan and looking to sort out visa... i admit i have left it a bit late is it a bit risky doing it by post now or should we make an appointment at one of the centres and do it in person?

what about one of the agencies anyone know any good ones we can use?

thanks

I'd say you're right on the edge of being OK doing it by post.
Special Delivery shouldn't really get stuck in the normal post - but you never know.

You've got just under 4 weeks which should be long enough - assuming you do everything right first time.
Is it your first time?
You'll need to make sure that you provide all the necessary documents e.g if you are in a certain profession you may need a letter from your employer.
It depends how confident you are that your application won't be rejected for some reason.

Don't forget VFS will be closed over Christmas and New Year.

If you are close to one of the centres and you have the free time to make a personal visit, I'd be inclined to do that.

You can't get a visa on the same day anymore so, depending where the nearest centre is, you might have to make a second journey to collect it.
Some centres (e.g. Manchester) only return your documents by post - you can't collect from there.
All details are on the VFS website.

One advantage of taking your application in person is that they'll check for any mistakes/omissions and you can often correct it at the time.

Sorry I can't help with a recommendation for an agency.

Good advise, I would just add that you still need to complete the application on line print it out and make an appointment before taking it to the application centre :tup

thanks for the replies... just been to Manchester and sorted it there filled out the form on line and printed it off I had made a couple of mistakes and they corrected it and I had to sign against any changes.

anyway all sorted made an appointment for 9:15 and was in and out in 10 minutes...

Thats good Ryan, glad you are getting sorted quickly :tup

Ours will be sent off today and already hubby and I have been bickering - have we done this/that? Is this right? Do we need this/that? He's gone to buy the SDE's as I type so it will be check, check and check again when he gets back to make sure we haven't missed something that some little eagle eyed jobsworth will pick up on - these damn visa applications must be the cause of many a row, every year - If only the Indian Government knew just how much stress they cause those of us who still choose to return.

I'll just be relieved to get them posted and even more relieved to get them back :D

What number are you putting into the VFS system?
don't you have to put your passport number in and date of birth into the tracking system?

I'm sure this is how we tracked our applications.

Is the message really "ref number is wrong"?
If so, I assume you've double checked your passport number.......

The usual message on the tracking system (at least on the one where it asks for passport number & DOB), is something like 'record not found'.
This means that the application is sat on somebody's desk waiting to be opened.
I don't think they open and log application details as soon as Royal Mail delivers them, that's why there's a time lag.
If you sent your application 5/12, I'd expect it to show up on the system pretty soon.

What 'Post Office trace' are you trying?

it arrived 3 minutes ago...weird that I couldnt track it via post office oh well thats another year of visa drama over...I just got to remember now not to throw my passport in the bin the day before I fly like last year :rofl

Probably left it a little late, as we're flying out on the 29th January 2012, but any hints and tips on the new visa applications?

Not been for a couple of years, and this will be our 3rd visit, but any help with what I need to do in order to get my visas would be appreciated.

just fill it in online - pay for it in the post office - send it in a SDE- and wait a week
