Well after all my worries concerning AAE here is a summary of my experiences last week. On 16th Sept we were due to check in at T2 Manchester and take off at 7:55am heading for Tenerife. Despite my ticket saying we were to check into T2, I knew from reading various postings on this board that all AAE flights now check in at the newly built Station Check-in and as a result we were the first passengers to check in as all the others were busy in T2 trying to find their way to 'The Station'.
At the check-in desk we were handed a letter saying that our plane had technical difficulties and we would therefore be flying with a different Airline 'Air Pulmantur' and the flight would now be departing at 8:30 from T1. We made our way to T1 and after expecting to board our plane around 8am, we finally boarded the 747-200 plane at 10:40am. After 30 minutes sitting stationary we were informed by the Spanish crew who could barely be understood (not their fault) that they were waiting for cargo to be loaded onto the plane. After another 15 minutes we were then informed that the had troublewith closing the cargo door. After a further 15 minutes we finally took off, flight itself was OK, however the food was not too good and we had no entertainment or information from the flight crew. We finally touched down in Tenerife around 3:30. At least we got there safe!
Return Journey:
Due to the scare at Manchester airport on the morning of our return we fully expected delays. Our flight was due to leave at 12:20, in the end we took off just after 2pm on an Air Atlanta branded 747-200 series. Although the plane was old and not the cleanest I've ever seen, we had new leather seats that were extremely comfortable, plenty of leg room, the cabin crew were excellent as was the food and we had regular updates from the captain as well as a real-time flight info display (maps/speed) etc on the main screens. I could not complain about return journey on the Air Atlanta plane, one of the best flights we've ever had.
All in all it seems its luck of the draw with this airline, due to our experiences with the outbound journey I probably would not book with AA/Excel again but if they can get their aircract which in turn would hopefully reduce the delays I wouldn't be put off booking again.
