my son aged 4 gets eaten alive on holiday, he also suffers from eczema so i have to be careful what i put on him.

last year in Bulgaria we slept next to him naked in the hopes the evil things would bite us instead, i didn't get a single bite (not enough blood in my alcohol stream ;) ) but logan was covered (through his pjs too  )

any advice on what to put on him that is suitable for a 3 yo and 4 yo would be appreciated.

thanks.

I would try the Avon Skin So Soft dry oil spray in Woodland fragrance as mentioned several times in this topic.

Hi all,

Just back from Tingaki in Kos and boy did they have a field day on me!

Used Boots aftersun with the repellant, no use..... used Avons aftersun with the repellant, will never know if it worked or not as it was so disgusting and lay on my skin like oil, after 30 minutes I couldn't stand it, (plus Hubby was waiting to go to the pub). Had to go and shower it off and was at there mercy for one night till I got a local repellant. Still didn't work too well, but at least it dried in!!

Also had the plug in with the tablets, but honestly think the mossies in Tingaki are a differnt breed and have their own repellants against our repellants, if you see what I mean

Not quite sure what to try next, but not getting too panicky as we go to Cyprus normally and the most I would have in 2 weeks would be about 3 bites.

Cheers,
Janet

The only thing that works for me is Boots own extra strength insect repellant that comes in a spray can - it is fabulous. We were in Alcudia 2 years ago, and the mozzies are rife down by the lake. We took the children horse riding right beside the canal, and I could actually see the mozzies landing on people's legs. They were landing on me too, but the instant they landed they jumped straight off again because of the repellant. I never got bitten once, and they usually have a field day with me. I would never use anything else.

Just bought the Boots one with deet. Silver/grey can, not the yellow cans.

Hope that is the correct one as am going to olu Deniz and am worried about mozzies.

I only bought one, but these products are on buy two get a third free at present. Includes the roll on, the aerosol and the pump spray, and the plug ins and the tablets for the plug ins.

That's the one - I also bought it on 3 for 2. Fabulous stuff.

:D glad i've bought the right stuff. I'm still worried about using something with such a high amount of deet in it on my kids. (I have got SSS for them as another option but not sure if it will work whereas I'm confident that the stuff with deet in it will  ).

Have others been using this particular one on children?

Hi. I mentioned in an earlier post that my son has been bitten quite badly in Corfu. He's due home tomorrow and I'm wondering if anyone's got any advice how to treat these once the mosquitoes have bitten. There's plenty of advice with regards to prevention but can anything be done to lessen the discomfort and to get rid of the blemishes other than wait for them to fade with time. He says he's got a big bite on his face and being the vain creature that he is, I don't think he's too pleased. Thanks

doepsmc -I have used the extra strength jungle formula my kids and it was fine once on but it was very potent and really made you choke so i wouldnt recommend letting them loose with the spray can. I have also got the boots one in the grey bottle but it is a lotion and it has never been used as i find the avon stuff is brilliant and does the trick for us . We are all pale skinned and usually a magnet for the mozzies . we just spary on the avon SSS up our arms and legs and round the ankles before going out in the evening and all is fine. The only odd bites we seem to get now are the stray moozies in the rooms that catch you off guard when you come back to the room later in the day and fall asleep in your bikini :D and the plug in has not been refilled :(

ps. i always carry the bite eze sticks as well in case they do get you :D

I dont really think any of the standard strength repellants work. Only the ones that contain deet (which are normally branded as extra strength) seem to work . and of course the Avon Skin so soft dry spray oil in woodland fresh. :D . Armed with these and your plug ins for the rooms is really all you can do besides pray and take the vit B1

Shirley.
Try using a dab of neat lavender oil on the mozzies bites, just make sure you buy from a reputable source like boots, where the oil is from the first distillation.

Lavender oil not only helps with the itching, but has been scientifically proven to help heal the skin, it is antibacterial, antiseptic and reduces the scar tissue formation.
It is now acknowledge by the medical profession as a valueable aid in the healing process of burns and scalds by reducing inflamation and limiting the formation of scar tissue.

He may smell like your grannie though

If he is anything like my lad then the mossie bite will be like mount vesuvius on his face.

Seriously, my lad went to work in Sidari in Corfu for 2 summers from May until October and he was covered the first year in them.
He scratched and scratched until he made himself bleed and the bites were still oozing serum out weeks after he came home.

The second summer he drank beer instead of "shorts" for the yeast content and drank that much that he came home with a yeast infection, that produced white patches on his torso, made to look worse with the tan he had acquired on the rest of his body....plus white dots all over him from the previous years bites that just wouldn`t tan over, where the female mozzie had sunk her fangs in him...plus a raging chest infection from smoking too much.

I produced the lavender oil and he told me "no way mother", "I`m not using that" but when the itching was driving him around the bend then he used it when I wasn`t looking and my house smelt lovely of lavender.....
He wouldn`t admit it being the vain creature that he is, but it worked for him on the bites.

Oooh,
Sanji,
I can sympathise with him as I have stayed in Sidari and it was the only holiday destination where I was bitten. The apartments had a stagnant stream nearbye, which you had to pass to get in them. Jardin d'Amour think they were called. Should have been re-named Jardin de Mozzie's :rofl

thanks Lyn :)

I will take your suggestion and get another bottle of the avon for the kids and pray. I am worried about using the stuff that is high in deet on the kids as I know it's a poison, can cause breathing problems (one of my children has asthma already) and muscle weakness.

Years ago my OH and I used the deet stuff all the time in Kenya as it was the only thing that really worked. its even more important when your in a malaria zone. We take risks with ourselves that we wont do with our kids.

I'm not up for the vitamin B tabs, as I know I'll forget to take them plus get lots of objections from the others as they don't like taking meds.

I think I'll be off to Boots tomorrow for the 50% DEET spray (I'll get 3 for 2, because there's three of us - should last the whole two weeks), then I'll pop into Holland & Barratt for some VitB1 tablets and Garlic capsules. We go to Olu Deniz in 6½ weeks, how soon should I start taking the VitB1 and Garlic?

Hi :D
I think you need to take them for about two weeks before you go, so you have plenty of time.

I'm going to Olu Deniz as well (17days) and that why I was after advice on mozzie repellants with deet. Apparently there is something in Olu you can buy called Sin Kov (I think) which is also good.

Have you used the boots ones before, do you think I will need one per person for the 2 weeks? Its years since I've used them.

They have all sorts, can sprays, pump sprays, roll ons and wipes, plus the things you plug in the rooms. They are quite expensive so it's best to get them on 3 for 2 if you can.

Was in M&S today, theirs has 50% Deet, was £5.00 and was on BOGOF.
