We stayed in Protaras last year and had a great time. I suggest you call into the local tourist office in Protaras. The lady there gave us some good tips about where the locals, (including herself) go to eat etc. Enjoy....
Me and my mate are having a girls away from the men holiday, very soon, and are self catering in toxotis apts pernera.. I read all the reviews on here and we seemed to like it... now...
my question is... how much is food, beer and eating?
Do we need an adaptor plug.. (we think we do but are confused)?
And as we like a bit of culture... where MUST we go?
Are there any 'local' markets?
Is there a alchohol tasting place?
and
Where can we get tradtional pressies for the men and family back home?
I've been on various web sites, and know some stuff but wanted honest advice not tourist board advice.
Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi violentmay...having just come back from toxotis hotel where we stay 2 times a year i think you will like it there..it might be a little quiet if your looking for busy holiday but the good thing about that hotel is when you have a hang-over next day its not too noisy outside..your not far from all the fun..prezzies can be found in most shops...when do you go and i will let my friends at the toxotis know ....
we don't want noisy... or busy.. we wanted. chill, sun, read, chill, recover from drink, chill, explore, chill. so that is why when I trawled the reviews I found that... so I am glad I am right.
> how much is food, beer and eating?
Varies but roughly the same as UK... search for threads on this subject
> Do we need an adaptor plug.. (we think we do but are confused)?
No. Sockets are same as UK.
> And as we like a bit of culture... where MUST we go?
Cultural Centre of Occupied Ammochostos (Famagusta) in Dherynia.
> Are there any 'local' markets?
No.
> Is there a alchohol tasting place?
Not as such. But there are tutored wine tasting evenings in Ayia Napa.
Have a look at the pleasures section of http://www.kapparis.info (Kapparis is between Pernera and the UN Buffer Zone).

Is there a alchohol tasting place?
of course there is, we call them bars... and there's a few of them about...
Actually there are a couple of places where we were introduced to other things .. one was on the jeep safari, where it you go for the Meze lunch in Marias you are given a local spirit to try (fasten your socks tight).. and another was the Noufaro restaurant where they give you and odd sort of strawberry schnapps after an evening meal...
Other than that go to the bars and ask for local specials like "brandy sour" or the Commaraderia Wine (very rich a bit like port)....
Pop into No 1 or Nicholas Tavern in Protaras for good food.
Traditional presents, try the ceramics, cheaper in Paralimni.
Plugs are same as in UK.
about 7-9 CYP per person Cyprus restorants (dinner)
Eating out in Protaras
our money lasted and some..
We aimed to enjoy our meals and set out each time to eat three courses.. after all were on holiday..
we never managed it.. if we had a starter... we got half way through pasta at la cultural del gusto...and no pudding.... and at katarna's we did manage it... by taking 2 hours to do so oiling it's way with wine. The most we spent on food was £25.00 (english) including wine and 3 courses and that was between two of us...
I would advise.. a) allow a long time to eat your meal.. enjoy it..sit outside drink your g and t and mooch through the menu... if you want pudding dont' have starter.. but if you like starter don't pick a big meal... they are so generous.
Can I recommend the stifado and kelfdiko...at Karatana's.. beautiful.
Also good pancakes.
Lunch time a bit hit and miss in the cheaper places, (windmills) the waitress forgot we were there, so we went over the road instead.. but the breakfast there was good.
Ref gifts.. we got ours in famagusta/turkish town trip...and also in protaras. usual brick a brack stuff... but managed to find some traditional stuff.
Do the trips... see the place...it's nice, get the history.
Need to go back to do other things
ta for all your info..
hi there new to this forum, thinking of a holiday in cyprus choice between going in march or may, any info welcome on the best places to stay weather etc. just me an my partner going no kids.
May will definitely be nicer weather than March.
Paphos is a great place to stay but does not have the best beaches. Having said that the area to the West of Paphos does have some nice beaches such as Coral Bay and beyond and if you hire a car you can find some great, quiet spots.
There is a lot of sightseeing that you can do in and around the Paphos area.
It really depends on what you are looking for.
Our choices are Pissouri and Larnaca.
We are so split between the 2 we always stay for one week in each on our fortnights holiday every year.
As Liakada has suggested, each to their own.
What sort of holiday are you after?
Mark
We enjoy a good beach and clean hotel.
Where would people recommend for our first visit to the island.
Thanks
there are plenty of historic sites to visit but the troodos will probably be out unless you want to ski,
wizard
Pernera (often classed under Protaras at the east end of the island) its just busy enough, lots of bars and restaurants, not the loud banging aiya napa type places, but plenty to do and see.. makes a great base... hire a car, see the rest of the island... go on a jeep safari... go horse riding... do the beaches... cafe's...... bars.... ... ... . . . . .. . .
back of the queue askcy..
Ayia Napa is also very quiet (yes, really!) at this time of year.
If you do go in February, then maybe Paphos would be more appropriate for you, especially as it is your first time.
There, Jim - I recommended Paphos
Ady
Much more open at that time due to it being more of a residential town, plus Dhekelia Garrison to cater for.
