Looks familiar this don't you think Beirut, Lebanon it looks the same, the difference is this was thirty odd years ago, about time they opened Famagusta up totally and get both sides to rebuild the place..and inhabit the city once more!

Cromwell you can veiw this in full screen if you wish.. ''go to view in the toolbar ''and click on full screen or just press ''alt then enter'', while the vid is running! this was an old Rik Ena TV show on locally CY TV of course.

Hi All

When we were in Cyprus (July this year), we went to Famagusta Ghost Town and the Old Town on a coach excursion. I think it has only been opened up in the last year or so.

Primarily we went as I wanted to show my children where I lived when I was younger.

The beach is fantastic and water was so warm and clear. We all really enjoyed our day .... once we got over the fact that there was a guard watching between the opened up bit and the deserted bit.
Definitely felt like we had stepped into a war zone with the deserted and ruined buildings. It was odd to see a school with all the playground equipment there and a crane which was obviously used in building a new hotel.

Would definitely recommend going there.

Totally agree with you Jimbox, seems such a shame not to share such a beautiful beach and facilities.

I do have some of our photo's of the beach if any one would like to pm me - although we had to be careful when taking photo's. You are not supposed to take any photo's of the Ghost Town!

Cheers,

Wendy

I took some video in Old Famagusta last year. It includes some footage from on the beach - yes, I know...some of it is a bit dodgy as I didn't want to lose the camera :?

This may be a silly question but have they opened up all of Famagusta? We paid a visit last year, but was only allowed on the beach front. Can you walk through the town itself?

Thanks.

Sue...No they haven't, as the posting's above say, you cant officially even take pictures from afar! that video if you looked was in clandestine.

Famagusta, in the main, is open.
Varosha is closed.
I've walked round "old" Famagusta, about 18 years ago.

That was great. We got back from Cyprus last week and one of the highlights of the holiday was going to the north of the island. We drove close to the Ghost town though I daren't take any photo's. We also spent time in the old town of Famagusta, visited Bellapais and Kyrenia. Since we first went to Cyprus and I became familiar with the history of the last 30 or so years it had been one of my ambitions to go "over the border" .

The first year this was possible we had decided to have a change and go to Mallorca so this year when we returned to Cyprus it was the top of my list of things to do and all I can say is what I've said to everyone back home - AMAZING.
