We are first timers to Sharm (in 2 weeks time)
Mr Lou is the diver and has just bought himself (after many hours on the internet) a Fuji F30 camera. He tells me it didn't break the bank
My brother-in-law has an Olympus MJU 700 with underwater housing.
he got some incredible pictures this year and was very easy to use. he got the package for around £320 on http://www.pixmania .co.uk

Check the instructions on the camera - some of the reloadable ones aren't guaranteed to be watertight second time around
Happy Holidays!
could someone suggest a under water camera that doesn't cost a fortune as we are only learning
Think it was either Asda or Tesco....sorry can't remember.
The pictures were great and that was the important thing!
For a fiver you'll find what iaintwoeyes describes.
For about £20 someting similar that can be re-loaded with new fresh.
Or from somewhere like Cameras Underwater you may be able to buy a waterproof housing if you already have a digital camera - some are little more than a waterprof bag - or a new camera + housing for a couple of hundred or so.
Two years ago we got two disposable underwater cameras from Boots, two for the price of one! We developed them in the same place, but one spool turned out absolutely brilliant, you could actually see the individual scales on the fish, but the other was blurred. I suppose thats something you have to expect, you get what you pay for. All the same, brilliant value for money.
I bought a SnapSight camera from a dive shop costing £30 which can be reloaded and comes with an 800 ISO film but my partner bought exactly the same one in Sharm for £12!! We haven't had them developed yet but will let you know what the pics are like. Fingers crossed they work out ok!
in a quandry at the moment i have a sealife reefmaster u/w camera never yet used it ,but its a 35mm film one ,apparently they were one of the best in there day ,now do i invest in a u/water digital or stick with what i've got .been looking at some on e/bay round the 70 pound mark are they worth getting (only 3m pixels) or get a better one or just stick with the reefmaster
I'd prefer digital for underwaer. You know you've missed the fish and can try again straight away.
We have just bought the Olympus underwater digital camera as its also shockproof, as my daughter likes to take pics by the pool so now we don't have to worry if she drops it in the water.
We haven't used it underwater yet, but are hoping to use it when we go to Egypt in May and so I will let you know how it goes. I have always used the disposable underwater ones before but never really get very good pictures underwater as I can never hold the view finder up to my eye correctly and swim after the fish. At least with a digital you have a big screen to see the fish with and if its rubbish you can just delete the picture and take new ones.
It is quite expenisve but it will be used as our main camera so we just have to take the one on holiday.

bought a digital one off e/bay and its really crap even though it looks the part ,i have now managed to get a cheap case thanks to alan walls link ,and a cheap canon a400 from america .let you know how it performs once it all arrives .thank god i,ve got a big pond full of fish
I am going to Taba (Hyatt Regency) in October and would like to know if anyone can recommend a not to expensive underwater camera (hopefully this will encourage the children to snorkel)
Many thanks
There are always the 'single use, cheap film cameras in a plastic box'. But it's far better to use a digital because you are taking photos of moving subjects and with digital know immediately if you have a good shot. This is likely to cost at least £200.
The Olympus mju series are good digital camers and the 770, for example, is fully waterproof. Costs around £250. Aalternatively there are options to buy a waterproof housing to place other cameras in. Try exploring the CamerasUnderwater website for something suitable.
I have looked at the Olympus MJU 770 sw, is this camera good for snorkelling as it is or should there be a protective cover for it?
Would appreciate anyone's comments regarding this camera, such as what are the quality of the pictures like in and out of the water.
Thanks
Certainly you can use it in the water straight from the box - well, after charging the battery and putting a bigger memory card in.
For snorkelling there are other units in the µ range that are waterproof to 10m, and a little cheaper.
I bought a vivitar sealife lookalike off ebay
nice to see this thread up and running again ,well i used my canon A400 set up in may and took some cracking pics with it as can be seen in underwater pics album ,but i have now sold that on and purchased a waterproof housing for my canon ixus 55 ,reason being better camera ,more pixels ,and a much larger viewscreen .cant wait to go back next may to try it out .if anyone wants to go digital on the cheap ARGOS are doing a vivitar 5mp digital camera including waterproof housing to 10 metres for the incredible sum of 49.99 yes under fifty quid its a vivitar 5188 item number 560-7446 ,thats got to be a better buy than the throw away 35mm disposables
The DMC-TZ1 has a 10X optical zoom!
I paid £299.99 for my camera in about July of last year. It's now available for £139.99 HERE! You can buy a big 2GB card from AMAZON for just £10.86 (you may well be able to buy them more cheaply elsewhere, I don't know).
Obviously you'd need the underwater housing for this camera. Now the camera is so cheap the housing actually costs more than the camera! After doing a quick Google THIS was the cheapest I could find (it's where my came from, bought in July this year). Worth carrying out a longer search for any bargains though!
