Hi Deb

Have you had a look at the Riu website CLICK HERE it tells you more about the hotel.

I'e stayed at several Riu hotels, mainly in Spain. The chain is German owned and unfortunately that nationality tends to get the best of the rooms. However the food and accomodation cannot be faulted, be prepared to put on some serious weight whle there! :D :D

The Riu Palace is a short walk from the beach and yes there are a few steps to climb on the way back.

The beach is wide and sandy; the tide comes in quite a long way at both ends though so you might have to move.

At each end of the beach there are paths across the cliffs leading to neighbouring beaches if you like a little more walking.

In terms of places to visit and as you have a car I can recommend Tavira (old town not on the beach), Silves (very old town with large castle in the centre) and Lagos. You can also drive for an hour or so up into the hills to see a bit of the 'real' Portugal and some very pleasant and empty landscape.

Be aware that many towns are now car free in their central areas and you will be directed to car parks on the edge. Also several of the older towns are built on hills so you will have a bit of walking to do.

Enjoy your stay.

We have an apartment in Olhos d Agua and can heartily recommend this as a superb place to stay. The hotel looks superb but I've not been in the rooms. The chain tends to offer bed and breakfast and dinner included. But if you can, try some of the brilliant Portuguese restaurants in the area.
We like A' Cantina, O'Caixote, La Sigale and Gofinos. :)
