Hi
We are looking to stay here next August and wondered if anyone had stayed here recently. Reviews look favourable but noticed that there is some building work going on opposite due to finish October 2007. Hopefully this will mean it's virtually finished by the time we get there. I understand it's a cliff top location with steps leading to the beach which I suppose is one way of getting some exercise!
Can someone advise if the beach is clean, etc and if the facilities at the hotel live up to the advertising?
We always hire a car and it looks like it's a good location for exploring. Can anyone advise some nice places to visit? We have never visted Portugal before so any advice is welcome.
Thanks
Deb
Hi Deb
I'e stayed at several Riu hotels, mainly in Spain. The chain is German owned and unfortunately that nationality tends to get the best of the rooms. However the food and accomodation cannot be faulted, be prepared to put on some serious weight whle there!
The beach is wide and sandy; the tide comes in quite a long way at both ends though so you might have to move.
At each end of the beach there are paths across the cliffs leading to neighbouring beaches if you like a little more walking.
In terms of places to visit and as you have a car I can recommend Tavira (old town not on the beach), Silves (very old town with large castle in the centre) and Lagos. You can also drive for an hour or so up into the hills to see a bit of the 'real' Portugal and some very pleasant and empty landscape.
Be aware that many towns are now car free in their central areas and you will be directed to car parks on the edge. Also several of the older towns are built on hills so you will have a bit of walking to do.
Enjoy your stay.
Thank you all!!
We like A' Cantina, O'Caixote, La Sigale and Gofinos.
