Went through Manchester the other week. At the entrance there was a security man who was asking anyone with liquids or medicines.
He was handing out clear plastic bags for people to put them in. No mention of doctors notes that I saw.
If you are carrying a controlled substance then it would be advisable.
If you are unsure then just ask your doctor for a note. Will save any problems.

I went through Gatwick a few weeks ago with a friend who takes a few different medicines, she wasn't asked about any of them and didn't have to put them in a plastic bag. The only thing in a plastic bag was her liquid cosmetics. As fwh says if you are worried ask your doctor for a note.

Essential medications in liquid or gel form are allowed in hand luggage, along with any essential medical equipment. Liquid medicines should be in containers not exceeding 100mls which should be placed in your resealable and transparent plastic bag. If your medication is in containers in excess of 100mls, you should contact the airport for prior verification of their procedures. They may require a doctor's letter or copy of the prescription, or they may even require the contents to be verified by a pharmacist at the airport during the security checks.

Essential medication in tablet form may also be carried in hand luggage, but not in the 'liquids' plastic bag.

A copy of the prescription should always be taken, not just to assist with identification of the medications at security checks, but also to assist you to obtain replacements in the event of loss or damage whilst on holiday.

For further details, please click on the link in my signature below, which will take you directly to the existing topic which discusses current hand luggage restrictions in relation to liquids, medications, etc.

I will close this thread now to reduce duplication.
