Candolim could become a theme park, like see the monkeys playing on a wrecked ship, and take home a souvenir piece of Goan history in the form of a lump of metal

346 shacks for the whole coastline of Goa, there's that many between Baga creek and Calangute steps.. :rofl I think there may be a few hotliers behind these shenanigans, the ammount of revenue they lose to the shacks must really infuriate them.....Keith

Beach shacks are a massively important part of a Goan holiday. I've been to some other lovely places around the world, but there is something lacking, and I'm sure it is the beach shacks. Without them, I may as well book a cheaper deal to the Dominican Republic or somewhere. The shacks make up a whole part of the enjoyment of the holiday, and make Goa stand out from other destination.

Bonkers!

in yesterdays times of India the c.r.z. said all shacks are illegal and they want them removed and are prepared to take there case to tne courts.

thanks for the link to the Times Of India report.

I'm assuming that the CRZ is responsible for regulating coastal zone activities, and from what I've read there are 4 categories that relate to building structures in varying distances from low tide.

So (I think) CRZ have done a new draft to try to stop the building of beach shacks from now on.

Have I got this correct?

As Mobor One says, beach shacks seem to be unique to Goa, at least I've never been anywhere that has anything similar.
We were in Goa Nov 2009 when the fiasco between the 2 rival shack organisations meant that many shacks weren't up (at least legally) until early December.
This certainly spolied our holiday to some extent and if beach shacks were to disappear altogether, I'm sure it would have some bearing on our decision whether to return to Goa.

It seems that the Goan Govt are not listening to shack owners and not lobbying for shacks to be included in the draft CRZ, which is sheer craziness imho.
I think this statement says it all:

If beach shacks are not included in the new CRZ rules, it will end up in killing Goa tourism and our livlihoods

I can appreciate the need to conserve the environment (I'm not even going to mention the River Princess) but does anyone know what damage (if any) beach shacks do to the beach.
What's left after they are taken down at the end of the season?

Every year we have some nonsense about the erection of shacks. It's utterly predictable and completely bonkers.

If the hoteliers (who were behind last year's farce and likely to have a hand in any delay this year) believe that people will return to Goa in the same numbers without beach shacks, they're getting it completely wrong. If all I wanted was a nice hotel with a pool to lounge around all day, I can get better, nearer and cheaper than Goa.

Beach shacks are an integral part of the holiday. They are a big reason why people return to Goa and enjoy it so much. I just wish Indian officialdom would stop meddling with things that aren't broke (shacks) and fix the things that are broke (River Princess, dodgy police etc). Trouble is, shacks are a nice little earner, and fixing the other stuff is a cost.

Anyway, any Indian with any construction skills will be in Delhi, propping up ceilings and bridges! :rofl

Every year for many years we have been going to one Shack on Candolim Beach. Last year we saw it ripped down. It was heartbreaking, all because they hadn't paid the bribe to get a licence, cos they had not known it was a bribe.

The shack next to them certainly made sure that it was pulled down by walking up the beach to make sure they were aware of this illegal shack.

I think they must have thought we would have moved next door to their shack....erm no!

We set up the tables in the middle of the ruins and sat and had a drink :D It was sad but we are loyal to that shack and I cannot see any of us going to another shack. The next day they had rebuilt it and all was well :D
Every year the same thing happens, if they would just let them pay the licence fee and get the shacks, in the same place every year, the same place they have had them for about 20 years, then it would be ok. But for some reason there has to be drama every year.

Wow! Is there a glimmer of common sense on the horizon?

for Goa this is more than sensible, lets wait for the problem to pop up,this just seems far too simple and obvious
