Reading this article in Times of India seems like things are not quite home and dry. What is going to happen when the shack are moved from where they have been for years. :que

If the draw is done fairly, look out for total confusion, BigBanana heading for Sinquerm and Calamari alloted Calangute, unimaginable. Surely Goan usual answer to this, bribery on a wholesale level will now take place. Most shacks are not waiting, but are building anyway, the next few days will be very interesting. Would not be surprised to see the return of the boys in brown.

So a lottery it is - just as all the other years ! Why don't they just come out and say they don't want shacks up so soon, so the hotels get some extra trade ? I guess that numbers will fall in November/December if they did announce this - so everyone loses out.
Yet again we will see the same shacks up and in the same places, and also be told by other shack owners, about those who do not have a licence and are operating on a daily basis (quite a few again..)
If you have abided by the law then you get your place, those that have abused it, should be banned and new comers allowed to have a go.
Some very simple solutions to all this, but the dumbness the way they go about things in all aspects of India are a farce.
November/December for quite a few next year will be a no-no, another kick in the Goan goolies.
I reckon I could still enjoy our 2 week break in Goa without shacks, if they had none all season, but it's going to be interesting as the season moves on, what the increases will be to cover the losses - if they don't recover this season, 2011 could be an expensive trip.

It will certainly make me think again before going in November. As for price increases I and a few others have commented that the shacks are not cheap anymore.Just convenient.

spike,i was worried it would effect our hols, being no shacks when i went, but suprisingly didnt bother us one bit in our 12 days we only ventured to the beach once for 20 mins!rest of time tried small bars where we never bothered trying before ,and tried more eating places, and spent a lot of time round pool for a change and was very relaxing too,so i really would not worry too much if theres no shacks up yet when you good people go.as someone said above if i go back again,it will not be in november, the goan authoroties certainly know how to alienate themselves against the people who bring money into goa, their loss i suppose!

Unfortunatly many of us who make our way to Goa independantly, stay in property with no pool, also for many of us the beach and shacks are what bring us to Goa. If I want a holiday poolside,I'll head for the likes of Thailand, better pools, better hotels. There was an air of resignation in all the shacks this morning following the latest delays, but late afternoon, certainly around the Goan Heritage, Holiday St area, suddenly kitchen stuff and what not started appearing. Whether some behind the scenes deals are happening, or whether it's just desperation, I dont know. Walked the whole length of the beach today and if it's to be the wreckers before any liciences are issued, they have a hell of a job before them, and it could turn ugly

So sad to see them cutting their own throats.

There's an interesting sentence just over halfway down in the link above that seems to suggest that even if a shack owner is successful in getting an allotment, the location may not be in the same place as they have had in previous years.

So, if I'm reading this right, if you stay in Calangute and your favourite shack is just down from your hotel, this year you might have to gt a taxi/tuk-tuk to Sinquerim to visit it. :que

Only in Goa. So people lying on sunbeds all along the beach are yet again going to be subject to the sight of police mob-handed pulling down half built shacks only there because of the desperation of the owners at the lack of licence.

Another boost for tourism in Goa.

This is going to be very messy as the owners of shacks in spots they have occupied for years are going to have to pay a lot of rupees to lottery winners of their old spot.

At the moment glad I am not a shack owner.Very difficult times now matter what your opinion of how much they make.
