Flight Only / Airline and Airports

Discussions relating to flight only, airlines and airports.

Did this flight about 4 weeks ago. Pretty smooth. Took off and landed on time. Excellent service. Both outbound and back the captain put the seat belt sign on and warned of turbulance, but I think he was being over cautious as it was just a few minor bumps, and most airlines probably wouldn't have put the signs on at all.

Just browsing through the SIA thread and I noticed that there is a post about SIA and BMI being part of the Star Alliance, therefore upon checking in, you are through checked to your final destination, as is your luggage. Whilst this is definately the case in the UK, when I flew back from Malaysia with SIA, I was only able to get through checked to Manchester, not Aberdeen which was my final destination. It meant that on landing in Manchester, I had to race to get checked in for my Aberdeen flight and get my boarding card. At the airport in KL, I tried to explain that Manchester was not my final destination, but they said that as I was not on a SIA flight to Aberdeen, they could not through check me. I said that although it was not a SIA flight, it was still a BMI flight and still part of the S/A, therefore I should be through checked. They were having none of it and like I said I had to race around Manchester to get my connecting flight, which after a long flight from Singapore was not what I really needed!!
Just a thought :que

Did you notice if the flight was a code share all the way through to Aberdeen? SIA Flight number as well as a BD Flight number?

It maybe possibly because the MAN-ABZ sector is provided by BMI Regional (not BMI Mainline) or that ABZ does not have baggage reclaim facilities to separate baggage arriving on a domestic arrival that has connected from overseas (allowing customs to sniff around bags not originating from domestic point of departure).

Swithering about flights to Australia. Like SIA on my last trip but now the flight from Manchester has a stop in Munich. Emirates Manchester to Dubai but the flight to and from Dubai on the last journey had a lot of young children all over the floor.
Wondering if I should do the flight from Manchester and then fly with SIA from Heathrow. Might be able to do the new Aircraft.

Any views I think if I fly BMI it could all be booked as one flight and so bags could be checked straight through.

Thanks for any advice.

I would choose SIA over Emirates any day. What is the problem with a stop in Munich, does it add a considerable amount of time to the journey? If it's just that you don't fancy Munich, don't be put off. It's one of my local airports and I use it often, it's an efficient, spotlessly clean, modern airport, especially the new(ish) terminal 2 that your flight would use.

Thanks Judith I was hoping for a response from you. It only adds 80 minutes to the outbound journey and a little more on the return. I will board the same aircraft again. On the in bound journey I need to go through Immigration in Munich on the way back. I have actually spoken to SIA rather than just a TA.
I have been in Munich Airport several times when I have visited Germany and I agree that it is a lovely Airport.
I have decided to book with SIA after a bit more research into Emirates. I am now just waiting to see if my Sister will travel with me and then I will go ahead and make my booking. The outbound journey is 21 hrs and some minutes and the inbound 23hrs+. Not bad for such a long journey. Times from Singapore has a lay over of about just under 3 hours if I recall correctly.

Again many thanks

Hi Sue

I would say you have made the right decision. I'm guessing you are spending Christmas with your brother in Perth, hope you have a great trip.

Thanks again Judith for your swift response.
I am going to go with the SIA by trusting my instinct.

Just booked my SIA flights today. Leave on the 25th November and return on the 18th January. So will avoid some of the winter weather!!
My Brother and their son are going to be in the UK for part of that time so my SIL and I are going to do a little holiday in WA whilst I am there. No cooking will be eating out. We Women do need a rest for the kitchen sink!!
I am not stopping over in SIA as it is only 5 hours flight time to Perth. Thanks again for your input.

Singapore Airlines grounds A380s

Singapore Airlines has grounded three of its A380 aircraft to switch engines.

The aircraft, in London, Melbourne and Sydney, will be flown to Singapore where their Rolls-Royce engines will be swapped for newer versions.

The move follows the incident last week when a Qantas A380 was forced to make an emergency landing after one of its engines exploded on a flight shortly after take-off.

The Australian airline grounded its six A380s last Thursday.

Singapore Airlines said Rolls Royce had advised it to ground the aircraft and put in the new engines.

But it stressed that the oil stains found in its engines were different to those discovered by Qantas.

A spokesman said: "We apologise to our customers for flight disruptions that may result and we seek their understanding."

It did not confirm how long the planes would be grounded for.

I am wondering whether this will impact on my travel with SIA from Manchester to SIA and onward to Perth on the 24th November.
I realise that the Aircraft concerned fly out of Heathrow but wonder if this could mean that my flight will be filled with some of the passengers who normally be flying on the A380?

Thanks I have had a look and I don't think there are any implications for my flight. Again it is a further 2 weeks. They seem to be using the 747 and the 777-300.
Thanks again

keela1eva2,

SIA use Boeing 777-300/ER out of Manchester, via Munich. They've not used the 747-400 for a few years now from Manchester. I wouldn't have thought you'll have any issues on your flight in relation to the A380 backlog.

Also for info the AIRBUS 330 is used from Singapore onwards to Perth. Used this service myself a few weeks back. Good service with not bad food!

Good luck at Perth airport - bit caotic at the international terminal after bag collection and clearing immigration as the airport (International side) is still rather small and somewhat busy at certain times.

Thanks. Not sure about buying duty free do SIA sell it on board as I don't think I will have time in Singapore. Won't buy in Manchester as there might be a problem with it. Not that concerned but would like to take something for my Brother.
I think it has been said by my Brother in the past that you can actually buy it in Perth Airport. Anyone know this or not. It would be a lot easier if I could as he will be meeting me there.

Singapore airlines has a limited selection of duty free on board for sale (no tobacco seen). You can indeed buy duty free on arrival at Perth Airport. The duty free area is not particularly big and due to the current exchange rates I think it is quite expensive although you may think different.
