Would you like to pack in smoking ?

I did when I lived in the UK for over 2 years ( I was a right anti smoker!).However upon moving out here I started again, whilst in my chilling period.

To a smoker there's nout like the sight of a 200 pack - long thin, all shiny in its cellophane, the sound of opening the outer pack to reveal 10 shiny 20 packs inside also wrapped in cellophane. Ooooooh! Especially when the whole lot costs less that one pack at home in the UK!!!!

If I ever return to the UK i would pack in the mo my last pack of Tenerife tabs ran out! its over £5 pack there isn't it nowadays?

Hi Allmen

Yes the smoking ban is in force.... in 'most' places, but not all.

Interestingly its the Brit bars and restaurants that seem to still be allowing it

With regards to kids been allowed in "smoking bars" here's a quote from oasis fm's web site

2: Owners of premises of under 100m2 who have chosen to allow smoking must clearly display the decision in writing on all entrances and in all publicity related to the premises. Children ARE allowed to enter these premises.

hope this helps

We got back yesterday & the ban seems to be in force but quite unpopular.
Some of the bars have chosen to ignore the ban completely, others have banned smoking inside & say smoking only outside. Others have declared themselves a 'smoking bar' & say children are not allowed in, some have declared themselves a 'smoking bar' & have said you can take your kids in. :?: One of our favourite bars (the Moonlight) has banned smoking & it was the quietest we have ever seen it in nearly 10 years, quite a few people arrived, saw they couldn't smoke & left.
The airport by the way is no smoking in any part of the building. - we were delayed for 3 hours so it meant no fag for 8 hours for the smokers.

Well that's a bit of a relief! The last time I passed through Tenerife South (November 2005) there were huge delays with the baggage being offloaded and the air in the baggage reclaim hall was so thick with cigarette smoke that my eyes were streaming and my clothes reeking of it by the time we actually got out of the terminal and into the fresh air.

Since the start of the year this ban has steadily been reduced to nothing more than a farce.

Of the bars and restaurants i visit, nearly all have now removed their "Smoking Prohibited" signs and replaced them with "Smoking allowed" signs.

Walking along Fanabe prom I noticed at the start of the year nearly all were non smoking, but now have half the tables with ashtrays and half without.

Like we expats suspected, with 80% of the population smokers, it simply wont work here. Add this to the fact that certain Spanish Law's are quite often ignored by the canarian authorities and its over.

So... Come to Tenerife and smoke cheap fagz

Hi All
I heard on Radio 4 today that there was a bit of a price war on cigarettes going on in mainland Spain - the cigs are, of course much much cheaper than in the UK anyway but still the various outlets are in fierce competition.
Here I have to admit that I stopped smoking over a year ago on a date etched into my memory and whilst the physical addiction has gone something in my brain is still telling me that it would be nice to have a cig especially when I have a problem or a drink, or a phone call etc. etc. I haven't become one of those ex-smokers who are intolerant about smoking. :D

Quote taken from another thread on Tenerife: -
For what it's worth, and it'll irritate half of you, and please the other half, no doubt - but I hope it'll bring a wry smile to all of you, the government has just announced that they're going to "revisit" the partial ban on smoking - apparently no-one's taking any notice of it, so they're going to consider reintroducing permissions, with some areas in which one can smoke ... ! Just Madrid at the moment, but ...

The Spanish government according to Elena Salgado the minister for health is actually going to toughen up the laws regarding smoking, if in a years time the majority of bars are still allowing it.
There is a price war going on at the moment, the government raised the IVA (tax) on cigarettes on 1st Jan when the ban came into force, and within hours certain brands slashed their prices, so the government raised the taxes a bit more and consequently certain brands slashed their prices even further.
Owners of the thousands of street kiosks are doomed to lose their livelihood along with small business`s which also includes the thousands of cigarette vending machines and the people who service them, and whilst this may be hardship in the UK, in Spain it means disaster and long term unemployment, without the cushion of the generous giro coming through the letterbox.!
One could say that they are making a living selling a health hazard, well in that case we had better shut down all the off licences/bars as well.
So, whether you are pro or anti smoking at least have a bit of sympathy for these people and the long term prospects that they have to look forward too.
Many bar owners would like to ban smoking, (even before this ban came in) it saves on the expense of extractor fans, decorating because of nicotine stains and the structural work that is needed to comply with the law ( which don`t come cheap) but, 6 weeks into the ban their bar takings are not enough to pay the electricity bill never mind all the other overheads....and barely pays the landlord to keep a rented roof over their heads, therefore, they have no choice but to allow it .....and at the end of the day, it`s all about choice for everyone.

So, am I happy that this ban is in force? no I am not  because I can see further than clearing the smoke from around me and further than the price of a packet of my fags. including the lost revenue from the sale of tobacco that the Spanish government is going to have to find from somewhere, and my guess is that you and I may be paying more for our holidays in the future.

In Santa Cruz/Carrefour the cheapest Spanish fags were less than 4 euro/200 whilst the 'expensive' ones were less than 8 euro200.

I'm hoping to give up the weed in the Reef, but it's not looking good :-(
