Its over 5 years since I went to Isla Margarita and I never felt unsafe there and had a memorable holiday staying at The Dunes Hotel which included an unmissable excursion over The Angel falls. We were warned about the dangers of leaving the hotel alone outside certain hours and we did hear of muggings but no fatalities. The point was that you were safe in your hotel and grounds and on escorted tours.
I had hoped to return there one day but package tours to the Island from the UK ceased a couple of years ago. In recent days there have been incidents of hotels being raided by armed robbers, the most recent being a British tourist shot dead in his hotel Casa Rosa on Playa El Agua only a few days ago. Daily Mail.
At the end of March a French tourist was killed in broad daylight during a robbery in the Pool Bar at the Hotel Laguna Mar. Aparenty because he was wearing a gold chain and resisted the robbers. latin America News. I hear a Canadian tourist was killed in the middle of April and there have been others this year. So aparently tourists are no longer safe in their hotels in Magarita. I suspect these statistics may have had a bearing in tour operators withdrawing direct flights to Magarita from Europe, if not I can't see this news helping.
